    Latino Definitions of Success: A Cultural Model of Intercultural Competence

    The present study sought to examine Latino intercultural competence via two separate methodologies. Phase 1 entailed discovering and generating themes regarding the features of intercultural competence based on semistructured interviews of 15 Latino adults. Phase 2 included conducting a cultural consensus analysis from the quantitative responses of 46 Latino adults to determine the cultural model of intercultural competence. The major results indicated that the participants, despite variations in socioeconomic and generational statuses, shared a common knowledge base regarding the competencies needed for Latinos to successfully navigate different cultures. Overall, the cultural model of Latino intercultural competence includes a set of skills that integrates traditional cultural values along with attributes of self-efficacy. The findings are discussed within a competence-based conceptualization of cultural adaptation and potential advancements in acculturation research

    Magnetotransport in two-dimensional electron gas at large filling factors

    We derive the quantum Boltzmann equation for the two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field such that the filling factor ν1\nu \gg 1. This equation describes all of the effects of the external fields on the impurity collision integral including Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, smooth part of the magnetoresistance, and non-linear transport. Furthemore, we obtain quantitative results for the effect of the external microwave radiation on the linear and non-linear dcdc transport in the system. Our findings are relevant for the description of the oscillating resistivity discovered by Zudov {\em et al.}, zero-resistance state discovered by Mani {\em et al.} and Zudov {\em et al.}, and for the microscopic justification of the model of Andreev {\em et al.}.     Projection Postulate and Atomic Quantum Zeno Effect

    The projection postulate has been used to predict a slow-down of the time evolution of the state of a system under rapidly repeated measurements, and ultimately a freezing of the state. To test this so-called quantum Zeno effect an experiment was performed by Itano et al. (Phys. Rev. A 41, 2295 (1990)) in which an atomic-level measurement was realized by means of a short laser pulse. The relevance of the results has given rise to controversies in the literature. In particular the projection postulate and its applicability in this experiment have been cast into doubt. In this paper we show analytically that for a wide range of parameters such a short laser pulse acts as an effective level measurement to which the usual projection postulate applies with high accuracy. The corrections to the ideal reductions and their accumulation over n pulses are calculated. Our conclusion is that the projection postulate is an excellent pragmatic tool for a quick and simple understanding of the slow-down of time evolution in experiments of this type. However, corrections have to be included, and an actual freezing does not seem possible because of the finite duration of measurements.Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX, no figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Bianchi {VI}0_{0} in Scalar and Scalar-Tensor Cosmologies

    We study several cosmological models with Bianchi \textrm{VI}0_{0} symmetries under the self-similar approach. In order to study how the \textquotedblleft constants\textquotedblright\ GG and Λ\Lambda may vary, we propose three scenarios where such constants are considered as time functions. The first model is a perfect fluid. We find that the behavior of GG and Λ\Lambda are related. If GG behaves as a growing time function then Λ\Lambda is a positive decreasing time function but if GG is decreasing then Λ\Lambda is negative. For this model we have found a new solution. The second model is a scalar field, where in a phenomenological way, we consider a modification of the Klein-Gordon equation in order to take into account the variation of GG. Our third scenario is a scalar-tensor model. We find three solutions for this models where GG is growing, constant or decreasing and Λ\Lambda is a positive decreasing function or vanishes. We put special emphasis on calculating the curvature invariants in order to see if the solutions isotropize.Comment: Typos corrected.     An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

    Diversidad de artrópodos y sus enemigos naturales asociados al café (Coffea arabica L.) en El Salvador

    El presente libro pretende dar un aporte en tal sentido, ofreciendo al lector una muestra de la diversidad de fauna invertebrada que se pueden encontrar en los cafetales bajo variados niveles de tecnificación y que en la mayoría de casos se ha logrado comprobar su cría a expensas del cultivo. Sin duda alguna que el esfuerzo no es del todo exhaustivo ya que existe mucha más diversidad por descubrir; pero es una muestra representativa del reto que representa el estudio de la fauna de artrópodos de este cultivo. En consecuencia se espera que motive al lector y a otros interesados en la temática, para profundizar en estos estudios de los cafetales y aumentar así el conocimiento de la entomología nacional. Por tanto, el presente libro ilustra los insectos, arañas y caracoles que están en poblaciones no dañinas que comprende 60 fotografías de arañas depredadoras y 350 fotografías de insectos entre fitófagos y benéficos (depredadores y parasitoides), con más de 200 especies de artrópodos asociados a los cafetales de El Salvador

    Evolution of the use of corticosteroids for the treatment of hospitalised COVID-19 patients in Spain between March and November 2020: SEMI-COVID national registry

    Objectives: Since the results of the RECOVERY trial, WHO recommendations about the use of corticosteroids (CTs) in COVID-19 have changed. The aim of the study is to analyse the evolutive use of CTs in Spain during the pandemic to assess the potential influence of new recommendations. Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive, and observational study was conducted on adults hospitalised due to COVID-19 in Spain who were included in the SEMI-COVID- 19 Registry from March to November 2020. Results: CTs were used in 6053 (36.21%) of the included patients. The patients were older (mean (SD)) (69.6 (14.6) vs. 66.0 (16.8) years; p < 0.001), with hypertension (57.0% vs. 47.7%; p < 0.001), obesity (26.4% vs. 19.3%; p < 0.0001), and multimorbidity prevalence (20.6% vs. 16.1%; p < 0.001). These patients had higher values (mean (95% CI)) of C-reactive protein (CRP) (86 (32.7-160) vs. 49.3 (16-109) mg/dL; p < 0.001), ferritin (791 (393-1534) vs. 470 (236- 996) µg/dL; p < 0.001), D dimer (750 (430-1400) vs. 617 (345-1180) µg/dL; p < 0.001), and lower Sp02/Fi02 (266 (91.1) vs. 301 (101); p < 0.001). Since June 2020, there was an increment in the use of CTs (March vs. September; p < 0.001). Overall, 20% did not receive steroids, and 40% received less than 200 mg accumulated prednisone equivalent dose (APED). Severe patients are treated with higher doses. The mortality benefit was observed in patients with oxygen saturation </=90%. Conclusions: Patients with greater comorbidity, severity, and inflammatory markers were those treated with CTs.     During the last years, several applications of biosurfactants with medical purposes have been reported. Biosurfactants are considered relevant molecules for applications in combating many diseases and as therapeutic agents due to their antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activities. Furthermore, their role as anti-adhesive agents against several pathogens illustrate their utility as suitable anti-adhesive coating agents for medical insertional materials leading to a reduction of a large number of hospital infections without the use of synthetic drugs and chemicals. Biomedical and therapeutic perspectives of biosurfactants applications are presented and discussed in this chapter
