    Magnetic field dependence of the energy of negatively charged excitons in semiconductor quantum wells

    A variational calculation of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet state of a negatively charged exciton (trion) confined to a single quantum well and in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is presented. We calculated the probability density and the pair correlation function of the singlet and triplet trion states. The dependence of the energy levels and of the binding energy on the well width and on the magnetic field strength was investigated. We compared our results with the available experimental data on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells and find that in the low magnetic field region (B<18 T) the observed transition are those of the singlet and the dark triplet trion (with angular momentum Lz=1L_z=-1), while for high magnetic fields (B>25 T) the dark trion becomes optically inactive and possibly a transition to a bright triplet trion (angular momentum Lz=0L_z=0) state is observed.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures submitted to Phys.     BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vitrectomy markedly alters the intraocular milieu, which can then affect the physiology of the retina and choroid. This study investigates whether vitrectomy also alters ocular blood flow as determined by laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty eyes of 20 patients that underwent vitrectomy for idiopathic macular hole or epiretinal membrane were studied. Standard 23-gauge microincision vitreous surgery was performed. Ocular blood flow of the optic nerve head, retinal vessels, and choroid was determined by LSGF before, during, and 2 weeks and 1 month after vitrectomy. RESULTS: Postoperative blood flow of the optic nerve head, retinal vessels, and choroid did not differ significantly from preoperative values. Intraoperative blood flow of the optic nerve head and retinal vessels decreased significantly from baseline with increasing infusion pressure from 20 mm Hg to 40 mm Hg (P < .01), and choroidal blood flow decreased significantly when the infusion pressure increased from 8 mm Hg to 20 mm Hg and from 20 mm Hg to 40 mm Hg (both P < .01). CONCLUSION: Blood flow did not differ significantly postoperatively versus preoperatively, but it was significantly reduced during vitrectomy with increasing infusion pressure.     Excitons and charged excitons in semiconductor quantum wells

    A variational calculation of the ground-state energy of neutral excitons and of positively and negatively charged excitons (trions) confined in a single-quantum well is presented. We study the dependence of the correlation energy and of the binding energy on the well width and on the hole mass. The conditional probability distribution for positively and negatively charged excitons is obtained, providing information on the correlation and the charge distribution in the system. A comparison is made with available experimental data on trion binding energies in GaAs-, ZnSe-, and CdTe-based quantum well structures, which indicates that trions become localized with decreasing quantum well width.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

    Genetic analysis of post‐epizootic amphibian chytrid strains in Bolivia: Adding a piece to the puzzle

    The evolutionary history and dispersal pattern of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), an emergent fungal pathogen responsible for the decline and extinctions of many species of amphibians worldwide, is still not well understood. In South America, the tropical Andes are known as an important site for amphibian diversification, but also for being a place where hosts are at greater risk of chytridiomycosis. In an attempt to understand the history and the geographic pattern of Bd‐associated amphibian declines in Bolivia, we isolated Bd from hosts at two locations that differ in their chronology of Bd prevalence and host survival outcome, the cloud forests of the Amazonian slopes of the Andes and Lake Titicaca in the altiplano. We genotyped Bd from both locations and sequenced the genome from the cloud forest isolate and then compared them to reference sequences of other Bd strains across the world. We found that the Bolivian chytrid isolates were nearly genotypically identical and that they belong to the global panzootic lineage (Bd‐GPL). The Bolivian Bd strain grouped with other tropical New World strains but was closest to those from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Our results extend the presence of Bd‐GPL to the central Andes in South America and report this hypervirulent strain at Lago Titicaca, where Bd has been detected since 1863, without evidence of amphibian declines. These findings suggest a more complex evolutionary history for this pathogen in Bolivia and may point to the existence of an old lineage of Bd that has since been extirpated following the arrival of the panzootic Bd‐GPL or that the timing of Bd‐GPL emergence is earlier than generally acknowledged.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/162756/2/tbed13568_am.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/162756/1/tbed13568.pd

    The effect of a natural, standardized bilberry extract (Mirtoselect (R)) in dry eye: a randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled trial

    OBJECTIVE: Dry eye, a chronic disease of lachrymal fluid and corneo-conjunctival epithelium, could significantly impact visual function, affects quality of life and work productivity. Beside several conventional treatments, nutritional supplements based on bilberry extract have been identified as effective contributors to eye health. Here, we aim at investigating the bioavailability of a standardized bilberry extract, its ability to alleviate dry eye symptoms and its antioxidant potential.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Either bilberry dried standardized extract derived from Vaccinium myrtillus L. fresh frozen fruits (Mirtoselect (R)) or a highly purified anthocyanin-rich extract, devoid of the non anthocyanin component and supported on maltodextrins, were each orally a dministrated to 5 male rats. Blood samples were collected at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 minutes after treatment, processed and analyzed by UV spectrophotometric method. In a parallel analysis, 22 otherwise healthy subjects suffering from dry eye symptoms were enrolled randomly assigned to receive the more bioavailable bilberry extract or placebo. Ophthalmological and clinical examinations including Schirmer's test, pupil constriction, diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) test and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) test were performed at inclusion and after the 4-week study period.RESULTS: The area under the curve of plasmatic levels of anthocyanosides in rats resulted 202.34 +/- 24.23 mu g . min/ml for Mirtoselect (R) and 130.93 +/- 4.93 mu g . min/ml for the highly purified anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract, notwithstanding the fact that the highly purified anthocyanin-rich extract group received an anthocyanins dosage much higher than the Mirtoselect (R) group (354 mg/Kg in anthocyanosides vs. 136 mg/Kg in anthocyanosides). 21 subjects, 11 subjects in the bilberry extract (Mirtoselect (R)) group and 10 subjects in the placebo group completed the clinical study. Schirmer's test values indicating the volume of tear secretion were significantly improved in the bilberry extract group (p=0.019), whereas no significant changes were observed in the placebo group. A subset analysis revealed that Mirtoselect (R) could be more effective in subjects with higher tendency of dry eye. In terms of antioxidant potential, the bilberry extract produced significant improvement of BAP (p=0.003) and an increase of modified BAP/d-ROMs ratio, an indicator of overall balance between antioxidant potential and oxidative stress.CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that natural, standardized bilberry extract (Mirtoselect (R)) is a natural more bioavailable delivery form anthocyanins, suggesting a strong matrix effect exerted by the non-anthocyanin component. Furthermore, it can improve tear secretion and plasmatic antioxidant potential in subjects suffering from DED symptoms
