Expression of Fibronectin and Tenascin after Direct Capping of the Pulp with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate and Biodentine®
BACKGROUND: Caries is a destructive process leading to progressive demineralization of the inorganic part of the tooth, accompanied by enzyme disintegration of the organic component of the tooth tissue. Considering the fact that caries activity can be stopped if the demineralization process is stopped, it is clear that the objectives of caries treatment are focused toward elimination of etiological factors and stimulation of regeneration of the dental tissues. That is why in the last years treatment of the caries disease is targeted to remineralization of the initial carious lesions, as well as on the biological behavior of the pulp-dentine complex after application of certain medications.
AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate impact of the two materials for direct capping, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine®, on the expression of glycoproteins fibronectin (FN), and tenascin (TN), responsible for dentinogenesis.
METHODS: In the tests were used materials MTA and Biodentine, as agents for direct capping of pulp exposure. From 60 extracted teeth included in this in vitro study, tissue cuts were made. Each of them was then analyzed on a light microscope to determine the amount of two extracellular matrix glycoproteins, FN-C, and TN-C.
RESULTS: Our study show that there is an expressed immunoreactivity for FN and for TN in the fibronectin bridge under MTA and Biodentine® after 8, and even after 30 days of their application.
CONCLUSION: Based on this study, we can conclude that both materials – MTA and Biodentine – may induce reparative dentinogenesis, in which FN and TN have certainly a major role in the formation of the fibronectin matrix
Analysis, modeling, and simulation of emergency department
Overcrowding in the Emergency Department (ED) is one of the most important issues in healthcare systems. Two major causes of this congestion are identified, the first one is unjustified Emergency Department visits and the second one a lack of downstream beds. The lack of downstream beds can deteriorate the quality of care for patients who need hospitalization after an ED visit. In this paper a generic
simulation model is developed in order to analyse patient pathways from the ED to hospital discharge
Complications and Risks of Percutaneous Renal Biopsy
BACKGROUND: Renal biopsy performed in native and transplant kidneys is generally considered a safe procedure.
AIM: In this study, we evaluated renal biopsy complications and risk factors in one nephrology facility.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a three-year retrospective study on patients who underwent renal biopsy between January 2014 and December 2016. Strict written biopsy protocol was followed. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained from medical charts. Complications were categorised as minor and major, according to the need for intervention. Minor complications included macrohematuria and/or hematoma that did not require intervention. Major complications included hematuria or hematoma with fall of hematocrit that required a blood transfusion, surgery or caused death. A binary logistic regression model was used to analyse the possible factors associated with complications after the biopsy.
RESULTS: We analysed 345 biopsies; samples were taken from patients aged from 15-81 years, of whom 61% were men. A total of 21 (6%) patients developed a complication, 4.4% minor and 1.7% major complications. There were no nephrectomy or death due to biopsy intervention. Overweight patients, as well as those with higher creatinine, lower hemoglobin, higher blood pressure and biopsy due to AKI had higher chances to develop complications (p = 0.037, p = 0.023, p = 0.032, p = 0.002, p = 0.002, respectively). The patients’ age, gender, kidney dimension, number of passes and uninterrupted aspirin therapy were not found as significant predictors of complications. In the multivariate logistic model, body weight (OR = 1.031, 95%CI = 1.002-1.062), lower hemoglobin (OR = 0.973, 95%CI = 0.951–0.996) and hypertension (OR = 1.025, 95%CI = 1.007-1.044) increased the risk of complications in biopsied patients.
CONCLUSION: Renal biopsy is a safe procedure with a low risk of complications when strict biopsy protocol is observed. Correction of anaemia and blood pressure is to be considered before the biopsy
TOPOLOGICAL DATA ANALYSIS AS A TOOL FOR CLASSIFICATION OF DIGITAL IMAGES
Topological data analysis, as a branch of applied mathematics, is one of the newer areas that enable data analysis. The basic tool of this field is persistent homology, the main method of topological data analysis and it is used to process the data set in this article. Persistent homology is a method that detects the topological features of a space reconstructed from a data set.
The application is illustrated on simple synthetic generated sets. In this article, we proposed and evaluated a new model that includes topological features into the classification process in real data sets composed of digital images. We got results in which there are some improvements in most of the statistical values for the classification performance over a model that does not include these topological features
The role of otoacoustic emissions in audiological assessment of children with suspected hearing loss
Introduction: Otoacoustic emissions are sounds that result from energy generated in the cochlea. The otoacoustic emissions test helps to confirm outer hair cell function.
Aim: The objective of the study was to evaluate the expression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions in children with suspected hearing loss.
Method: This retrospective study included 115 children, 65 males (56.5%) and 50 females (43.5%), aged 0 to 14 years (mean age of 6.9±3.5 years), examined during the period from January 2017 to March 2021. The audiological assessment included Distortion product otoacoustic emissions test, tympanometry, and pure-tone audiometry in children older than 4 years.
Distortion product otoacoustic emissions were recorded in the form of DP- gram elicited by two primary tone stimuli L1=65 dB SPL and L2=55 dB SPL.
Levels of the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions were registered at frequencies from 1000 Hz to 8000 Hz at four points per octave. For statistical data analysis we used Chi-square test with level of significance p<.05.
Results: From the total of 81 children with tonal audiogram, 13 children (16%) had sensorineural hearing loss with mean distortion product otoacoustic emissions amplitude -7.4 dB SPL, and 68 children (84%) had normal hearing with mean DPOAE amplitude 9.9 dB SPL. In children without tonal audiogram, distortion product otoacoustic emissions were present in 23 children (67.6%) at control examination after absence during middle ear pathology and 9 children (26.5%) at first examination. Otoacoustic emissions were absent in 2 children (5.9%) without middle ear pathology. They were mostly absent at frequency of 4000 Hz (p=.036).
Conclusion: The otoacoustic emissions test is good cross-check for pure- tone audiometry. In children with sensorineural hearing loss, the otoacoustic emissions are absent in the range of hearing loss. In young children not cooperative for pure-tone audiometry, expression of otoacoustic emissions after previous absence during middle ear pathology would indicate that there is no coexistent sensorineural hearing loss

Correlation between pure tone thresholds and speech thresholds
Speech detection threshold (SDT) depends on audibility alone, whereas speech recognition threshold (SRT) requires the stimuli to be heard and identified. The aim of the study was to determine the difference between SDT and SRT, and to analyze the correlation between pure tone thresholds and speech thresholds. Difference between SDT and SRT was ≤ 12 dB in majority of cases (p = .018). SDT was strongly correlated with the best pure tone threshold. Pearson correlation coefficient was the highest in “Inverted U” shape (r = .99). There was strong correlation between SRT and PTA (500-2000), PTA (500-4000), and PTA (500-1000), especially in Rising configuration (r = .997, r = .992 r = .989, respectively), as well as, between SRT and frequency of 1000 Hz (r = .989). SRT is in the highest correlation with PTA (500, 1000, 2000 Hz) and with the hearing threshold at frequency of 1000 Hz. © 2021, Institute for Human Rehabilitation. All rights reserved.publishedVersio
Analysis and Visualization of Social Networks
The huge development of social networks opens the need for their analysis. The visualization of social networks is an important and powerful tool for such kind of analysis. There are many software packages which can be used for visualization. In this paper we are using graph theory, Python, and the free software Gephi to make visualization of social networks. Particularly we have made visualization of social network Twitter in order to show the relations between its users. This visualization helps in the analysis of relations and interactions between social media users
