    Profitability of food industry companies in the Republic of Serbia

    Food industry is an important segment of manufacturing industry. The EU food industry is the world's leader. An important characteristic of the food sector of the Republic of Serbia is its pronounced dual structure, with a large number of small and mediumsized and a small number of large companies. It is believed that the relatively modest funds for investment in modern technology and increasing production efficiency, despite foreign direct investment, have an unfavourable effect on the perspective of this sector. Based on the number of companies, capacities, volume of production, export potential, and number of employees, confectionery industry is assessed as a significant segment of food industry and economy of the Republic of Serbia. The research objective is to examine whether reputable companies in the food industry of the Republic of Serbia are profitable and assess their profitability growth in the past four-year period. The research results show that the values of the relevant profitability indicators vary considerably in the observed period, regardless of their reputation and the competitive position on the market

    Are unemployment rates stationary for SEE10 countries? Evidence from linear and nonlinear dynamics

    This article aims to answer the questions concerning the dynamics of unemployment rates, including whether there is a subsequent hysteresis in the selected sample of ten countries of the South East Europe. The linear and nonlinear tests have been used to determine the stationarity of unemployment rates. The findings show that in eight out of ten countries, unemployment is a stationary process which implies that the hysteresis hypothesis has not been confirmed. The unemployment rates in Albania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Greece, Montenegro and Turkey manifest mean reverting behaviour. The movements of unemployment rates in the next period can be forecasted with a relatively high degree of certainty in terms of the mentioned countries. The unemployment in FYR Macedonia and Serbia is a non-stationary process. The results further emphasize the importance of allowing asymmetric adjustment and structural breaks, especially in the case of Romania, Montenegro and Turkey

    Rural tourism supports the linking of the economic, social and environmental development elements, while boosting employment and stepping up rural development This paper aims to assess the importance of rural tourism in terms of the economic and rural development in the Republic of Serbia. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the values referring to the number of registered tourist arrivals and overnight stays per region. According to the research findings, the region of Šumadija and Western Serbia has the largest number of rural households and also records the highest number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays. In developed countries, the tourism industry strongly supports the agricultural sector by creating new jobs and contributing to the overall economic development, however, the situation is quite different in Serbia. Furthermore, considering the EU, where the rural areas cover a large part of the overall territory, it is exactly the rural areas that account for a significant number of overnight stays and accommodation facilities.Publishe

    Sustainable integral development of agriculture and tourism in the Republic of Serbia

    Sustainable development is one of global imperatives and it involves the harmonization of economic, environmental, and social development goals, with an appropriate institutional support. There are plenty of resources pertaining to the sustainable development of agriculture and tourism, as numerous studies and practical examples worldwide confirm. The paper highlights the example of the Republic of Serbia and can be of use for other countries with similar resource potentials and developmental constraints. Namely, agriculture and tourism in the Republic of Serbia are distinguished by abundant natural and cultural-historical resources, but what mostly lacks are funds for serious investment, as well as a modern and holistic approach to development, so the available resources are insufficiently used. Accordingly, the research aims to point to the necessity of a more creative use of agro-tourism resources, i.e. to the more promising directions of the integral development of agriculture and tourism on sustainable grounds. The paper results highlight the extreme importance of institutional support to agriculture and tourism networking within the concept of sustainable development.Publishe

    Changes of c-myc expression in b16 melanoma cells induced by 8-chloroadenosine-3′, 5′-monophosphate and tiazofurin

    The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of 8- chloroadenosine 3′, 5′-monophosphate (8-Cl-cAMP) and tiazofurin (TR) on the expression of c-myc gene in B16/F10 and B16/C3 mouse melanoma cells. Exponentially growing cells were treated with 8-Cl-cAMP or TR (5µmol - 25µmol) for 6h and 24h. The level of c-myc expression, estimated by RT-PCR, did not significantly change in B16/F10 cells after treatment with 8-Cl-cAMP or TR. Similar results were obtained in B16/C3 cells after treatment with 8-Cl-cAMP. The level of c-myc expression has shown a significant increase in B16/C3 cells after treatment with TR.     Effects of short time exposure of HTB140 melanoma cells to fotemustine and dacarbazine

    Different experimental set-ups were designed to study cytotoxic and cytoststic effects on HTB140 melanoma cells after 1 h treatment with fotemustine (FM) or dacarbazine (DTIC). FM induced dose dependent cell inactivation, boosted by its toxicity, particularly for higher doses. DTIC treatment for 1 h was insufficient to provoke almost any effect on melanoma cells.     Funding is one of the most important issues of agriculture and rural development of the Republic of Serbia, because insufficient financial resources allocated to this sector of the country's economy are considered the key limitation for better valorization of agricultural resources and the revitalization of rural areas. Agribusiness and rural development have a major socio-economic importance for the Republic of Serbia, which is supported by a number of strategic documents, development indicators and scientific and expert analysis implemented in the country and at a global level; therefore, the aim of this study is to determine whether it is necessary and possible to improve the funding of agricultural development and rural economy of the Republic of Serbia, in current conditions.     Sensitivity of HTB140 cell exposed to protons and alkylating agents

    Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis due to resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy regimens. The mainstay of treatment remains DNA-alkylatingagent dacarbazine (DTIC). Fotemustine (FM), chloroethylnitrosourea agent, also has demonstrated significant antitumoral effects in malignantmelanoma. However, the resistance of melanoma cells limits their clinical application. In order to enhance the inhibition of melanoma cell growth, in this study, combined treatment of FM and DTIC with proton irradiation, was investigated. We analyzed the effects of combined treatment on HTB140 melanoma cell viability and proliferation. Significant inhibition of cell growth, especially cell proliferation, was obtained after treatment with protons and FM compare to single irradiation or drug treatment.     Penicillium expansum as a postharvest pathogen of tomato fruit in Serbia

    Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum, L.) is one of the most widely cultivated crops with high content of vitamins and antioxidant lycopene, which are very important for human health. During the growing season and postharvest storage tomato is susceptible to various diseases caused by pathogenic fungi. In July 2019, tomato (cv. Balkan) with symptoms of blue mold decay were collected from market in Belgrade, Serbia. Macroscopic morphology of three obtained monosporic isolates were observed after growth on Czapek yeast autolysate agar (CYA), creatine sucrose agar (CREA), and malt extract agar (MEA) for seven days at 25ºC. Also, selected isolates were incubated at 5, 25, and 37°C for one week on CYA to monitor the effect of different temperature incubation conditions. Colony characteristics and micromorphology of the fungi agreed with the literature descriptions of Penicillium expansum. The conidiophores of isolates were hyaline, mainly terverticillate; stipes usually smooth-walled; metulae and phialides cylindrical; conidia ellipsoidal (3-3,86-4 × 3-3,13-4 μm), greenish, smooth-walled. Total DNA was extracted using DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) and partial β-tubulin (BenA) sequence was amplified with primers Bt2a/Bt2b. BenA sequence of representative isolate ParP/1 was deposited in NCBI GenBank (Accession No. ON186699). Phylogenetic analysis clustered our isolate with other isolates of P. expansum. Pathogenicity test was conducted on symptomless, detached tomato fruits. All tested isolates caused typical blue mold symptoms on tomato fruits after seven days of incubation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. expansum causing postharvest fruit decay on tomato in Serbia
