The effect of CO2 anaesthesia on slaughter pigs suffering from pneumonia
ableiten; Tiere ohne pathomorphologischen Lungenbefund zeigten ebenso häufig
Betäubungsgeschehen bei der Verwendung von CO2 auswirken.CO2 is considered as a feasible way to stun pigs for slaughter. This
circumstance includes the necessity of having an efficient method of stunning
animals with pathologic changes in the lung parenchyma, when a decreased
exchange of respiratory gases could be assumed. This work should contribute to
evaluate the efficacy of CO2 stunning in pigs showing alterations in the lung
parenchyma (e.g. pneumonia). Stunning systems in two different slaughterhouses
have been investigated. Slaughterhouse 1 uses a concentration of 90% CO2 with
a residence time of 120 seconds. Slaughterhouse 2 applies 90% CO2 for a time
span of 90 seconds. Preassigned, criteria have been established to evaluate
the efficacy of stunning, which includes the corneal reflex and the nose prick
reflex. Additionally, any occurrence of gasping breathing was documented. This
data has been obtained immediately after throw-off from the CO2 stunning
system. Following bleeding, blood was collected from the incision site for
blood gas analysis and blood chemistry from whole venous blood. PO2, PCO2 and
pH have been determined as blood gas parameters. A decrease of the pH caused
by the inspired CO2 served to assess the stage of narcosis. Sodium, Potassium
and Chloride were determined from serum samples to assess the strong ion
difference (SID) in accordance to the Stewart- model. The purpose was to
evaluate the ability and dimension of electrolyte changes caused by CO2
intake. The pathological findings in the lung parenchyma could be divided in a
mild, moderate and severe stage. The analysis was designed to combine results
from lung evaluation with reflex response, blood gas analysis and serum
analysis, respectively. Furthermore, the results of reflex response were
associated with the findings of the blood gas analysis (pH, PCO2, PO2) and the
SID value. Regarding this particular evaluation, discrimination between both
slaughterhouses were possible. Thus, in slaughterhouse 1, the absence of
reflexes correlates with a lowered pH, and in addition, blood gas samples of
these animals were characterized by decreased PO2 and increased PCO2. SID
values, in average, were decreased in animals without showing reflexes. These
observations were not reproducible in slaughterhouse 2: a longer residence
time in slaughterhouse 1, which comparatively provoked a higher toxic effect,
could serve as an explanation. There was no correlation between findings in
the lung parenchyma and the observed reflexes; both animals with and without
pathologic findings displayed reflex responses in the same percentage. In
addition, this was the same in animals with severe pathologic changes,
respectively when both slaughterhouses were evaluated in a separate way. The
evaluation of the blood gases revealed no difference between animals with and
without pathologic findings. Both groups were characterized by markedly
reduced pH and PO2 values and increased PCO2 values. The evaluation of SID
elicits no differences within the groups. For these particular
slaughterhouses, using a CO2 stunning method, pneumonia did not cause a
difference in the level of anaesthesia
Situation and challenges of the Mexicana organic sector
For Mexico, organic farming is a feasible option, given the goodness it offers the country, since it is linked to the geography of poverty, mainly with small-scale farmers with surfaces below 3 ha, 22 indigenous groups, and 35% of women responsible for farming. In addition, it is linked to a form of production that protects and preserves natural resources
Nonrigid reconstruction of 3D breast surfaces with a low-cost RGBD camera for surgical planning and aesthetic evaluation
Accounting for 26% of all new cancer cases worldwide, breast cancer remains
the most common form of cancer in women. Although early breast cancer has a
favourable long-term prognosis, roughly a third of patients suffer from a
suboptimal aesthetic outcome despite breast conserving cancer treatment.
Clinical-quality 3D modelling of the breast surface therefore assumes an
increasingly important role in advancing treatment planning, prediction and
evaluation of breast cosmesis. Yet, existing 3D torso scanners are expensive
and either infrastructure-heavy or subject to motion artefacts. In this paper
we employ a single consumer-grade RGBD camera with an ICP-based registration
approach to jointly align all points from a sequence of depth images
non-rigidly. Subtle body deformation due to postural sway and respiration is
successfully mitigated leading to a higher geometric accuracy through
regularised locally affine transformations. We present results from 6 clinical
cases where our method compares well with the gold standard and outperforms a
previous approach. We show that our method produces better reconstructions
qualitatively by visual assessment and quantitatively by consistently obtaining
lower landmark error scores and yielding more accurate breast volume estimates
Organic agriculture is one of the fastest growing agricultural activities. In Mexico, both the number of producers and hectares devoted to it increased in recent years, giving small producers an opportunity to eliminate part of the exclusion generated by conventional agriculture and allow them to get into the market. However, it is important to know the situation of these producers from various perspectives, so in this work the measurement of their economic, ecological and socio-cultural sustainability was carried out in order to show that their inclusion in tianguis and organic markets allows them to be sustainable. For this, three markets of the Red Mexicana de Tianguis y Mercados Organicos were selected in the states of Tlaxcala, Puebla and Oaxaca, 30 surveys were applied and the data were grouped in scales from 0 to 4 indicating lower and higher sustainability respectively, (values above 2, imply sustainability). These indicators were weighted according to their importance. The results show that the small producers of these farmer’s markets are economically and ecologically sustainable since the values shown by the indicators were 2.62 and 2.5 respectively, however, in the socio-cultural criterion the result was 1.77 suggesting unsustainability. It is therefore necessary to establish strategies that improve the value of these indicators through the promotion and dissemination of organic products and the local market, creating conscience of ecological practices and processes and the participation of more actors involved in agricultural practices
(ICA2
SISTEMATIZACIÓN AGROECOLÓGICA SOSTENIBLE COMO PROPUESTA DE DESARROLLO RURAL EN LOXICHA, OAXACA, MÉXICO
In 2011, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research for Integral Rural Development in Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UACh) began the project for research-outreach-service “Integral Rural Development in the Region of Loxicha, Oaxaca, México”, in the municipalities of San Bartolomé Loxicha, San Agustín Loxicha and Candelaria Loxicha. The project included the lines of increase in productivity, productive diversification, environmental services, and improving quality of life. The evaluation of the advances obtained between 2011 and 2015 was carried out, through the systematization proposal by Chávez-Tafur.Because of the magnitude of the project, the results are analyzed from the “Learning from experience” proposal. As results, the different achievements that have allowed the acceptance of the project in the region were recorded, through a participative action research scheme. The project is contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of Zapotec producers through a sustainable agroecological approach that gives access to organic foods, and in general a sustainable management of natural resources. A real experience of rural development is offered as a result of this project, which is connected to communities and directed at resolving the countryside problematic.
In different evolutionary approaches human behavior, mind and experience/ feeling are analysed as a functional dimension – developed under evolutionary conditions through selection as an adaptive structure; those features have survived, that could best contribute to the transmission of genes under given environmental conditions and in the successful adaptation to them. That paradigm of research provoked criticism. Different aspects of the discussion are exemplified by studies about lie and morality/ ethics in animals and humans (Sommer), the ethnological research about aggressiveness in tribal societies (Chagnon) and the research about mating strategies (Trivers/ Buss). The translation of ethical Good-and-bad-dichotomies into evolutionary and functional True-and-false-dichotomies and the ubiquitary explanation demand are brought out as a trigger. Problems, limits and chances of evolutionary approaches are discussed under scientific and meta-scientific perspectives
Relevance of education and intelligence for the political development of nations.
Abstract Political theory has described a positive linkage between education, cognitive ability and democracy. This assumption is confirmed by positive correlations between education, cognitive ability, and positively valued political conditions (N = 183 − 130). Longitudinal studies at the country level (N = 94 − 16) allow the analysis of causal relationships. It is shown that in the second half of the 20th century, education and intelligence had a strong positive impact on democracy, rule of law and political liberty independent from wealth (GDP) and chosen country sample. One possible mediator of these relationships is the attainment of higher stages of moral judgment fostered by cognitive ability, which is necessary for the function of democratic rules in society. The other mediators for citizens as well as for leaders could be the increased competence and willingness to process and seek information necessary for political decisions due to greater cognitive ability. There are also weaker and less stable reverse effects of the rule of law and political freedom on cognitive ability
ESTADO DE LA CUESTIÓN SOBRE LAS CRÍTICAS A LA AGRICULTURA ORGÁNICA
This article discusses the main criticisms of organic agriculture. The methodology is qualitative descriptive narrative review, with elements of simplification and dramatization to highlight key points. The purpose of the study was to analyze what has submitted the relevant literature on the discussion of the main criticisms of organic farming and what answers are given to these criticisms. For this purpose 46 articles were analyzed, in magazines and collections of digital databases. The qualitative approach allowed the identification of the main arguments and we decided to group them into two categories: (i) criticism of organic production and (ii) criticism of organic marketing. Finally, the article considers that organic agriculture can play an important role for the global food, however, we pointed the risk that in the future organic agriculture might lose its fundamental principles of serving mankind and the environment
CARACTERÍSTICAS Y COMPARATIVA DE LOS PRODUCTORES DE ALIMENTOS ECOLÓGICOS EN EL SURESTE DE EUROPA: EL CASO DE LA REGIÓN DE MURCIA, ESPAÑA
The Region of Murcia (Spain) has one of the main areas
of organic fruit and vegetable production in Europe, with
extensions for some products of between 10 and 20 % of the
country’s organic agriculture surface. This work contains
a survey carried out on 106 farmers, along with a typology
of organic cultivations. First, an analysis was performed by
conglomerates on the variables of each company, distinguishing small and large ones; later, using logistic regression models, an analysis was carried out on the characteristics that define the groups of farmers, the first one being the least professional but most environmentally aware farmers. The typology found of these farmers suggests the interest for more differentiated
development policies for organic farming
