Acceptance and uptake of improved biomass cookstoves in Peru: learning from system level approaches to transform large-scale cooking interventions
Improved biomass cookstoves (ICS) are cooking technologies that increase wellbeing and reduce household air pollution. With the goal of identifying factors influencing ICS acceptance and uptake at five system levels (intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, institutional, and policy), we carried out a qualitative study in three regions in Peru. We conducted 32 focus group discussions (243 ICS users) and 26 semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, applying a combination of two system-level frameworks for analysis: the socio-ecological model and the ICS adoption domain. Enabling and impeding factors at each level were closely related to each other. Decisions made by policy makers - often centralised and not considering local/regional realities - strongly influenced acceptance and barriers at lower levels. ICS acceptance and uptake tended to be low when ICS users were not involved from the start. Most ICS programmes focused on stove distribution outputs, without considering community needs, such as training on ICS building, maintenance and repair, or issues related to spare part availability, which is a strong barrier to sustained uptake of ICS. Using a combination of models that allows one to examine facilitators and barriers at multiple levels, as well as the interactions of those levels, was useful in assessing potential improvements to intervention design, facilitating programme success, preventing unforeseen programme adaptations, and improving cost-effectiveness of interventions
The basic elements of community mental health education
An adequate plan for community mental health education should include consideration of five basic elements which are derived from an examination of the core concepts of community mental health. These five elements are approached from the vantage point of the conceptualizations and skills necessary for practice in community mental health. Illustrations of these elements are offered along with some suggestions about relevant field experiences and conceptual tools .Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44324/1/10597_2005_Article_BF01435916.pd
Observation of the Dalitz Decay
Using 586 of collision data acquired at
GeV with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage
Ring, we report the first observation of
with a significance of . The ratio of branching fractions
\calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}) / \calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+}
\gamma) is measured to be , which is consistent with theoretical expectations
Studies of the decays D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^-\pi^+ and D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^+\pi^-
The first measurements of the coherence factor R_{K_S^0K\pi} and the average
strong--phase difference \delta^{K_S^0K\pi} in D^0 \to K_S^0 K^\mp\pi^\pm
decays are reported. These parameters can be used to improve the determination
of the unitary triangle angle \gamma\ in B^- \rightarrow
decays, where is either a D^0 or a D^0-bar meson decaying to
the same final state, and also in studies of charm mixing. The measurements of
the coherence factor and strong-phase difference are made using
quantum-correlated, fully-reconstructed D^0D^0-bar pairs produced in e^+e^-
collisions at the \psi(3770) resonance. The measured values are R_{K_S^0K\pi} =
0.70 \pm 0.08 and \delta^{K_S^0K\pi} = (0.1 \pm 15.7) for an
unrestricted kinematic region and R_{K*K} = 0.94 \pm 0.12 and \delta^{K*K} =
(-16.6 \pm 18.4) for a region where the combined K_S^0 \pi^\pm
invariant mass is within 100 MeV/c^2 of the K^{*}(892)^\pm mass. These results
indicate a significant level of coherence in the decay. In addition, isobar
models are presented for the two decays, which show the dominance of the
K^*(892)^\pm resonance. The branching ratio {B}(D^0 \rightarrow
K_S^0K^+\pi^-)/{B}(D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^-\pi^+) is determined to be 0.592 \pm
0.044 (stat.) \pm 0.018 (syst.), which is more precise than previous
measurements.Comment: 38 pages. Version 3 updated to include the erratum information.

Updated Measurement of the Strong Phase in D0 --> K+pi- Decay Using Quantum Correlations in e+e- --> D0 D0bar at CLEO
We analyze a sample of 3 million quantum-correlated D0 D0bar pairs from 818
pb^-1 of e+e- collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E_cm = 3.77
GeV, to give an updated measurement of \cos\delta and a first determination of
\sin\delta, where \delta is the relative strong phase between doubly
Cabibbo-suppressed D0 --> K+pi- and Cabibbo-favored D0bar --> K+pi- decay
amplitudes. With no inputs from other experiments, we find \cos\delta = 0.81
+0.22+0.07 -0.18-0.05, \sin\delta = -0.01 +- 0.41 +- 0.04, and |\delta| = 10
+28+13 -53-0 degrees. By including external measurements of mixing parameters,
we find alternative values of \cos\delta = 1.15 +0.19+0.00 -0.17-0.08,
\sin\delta = 0.56 +0.32+0.21 -0.31-0.20, and \delta = (18 +11-17) degrees. Our
results can be used to improve the world average uncertainty on the mixing
parameter y by approximately 10%.Comment: Minor revisions, version accepted by PR
Measurement of B(Ds+ -->ell+ nu) and the Decay Constant fDs From 600/pb of e+e- Annihilation Data Near 4170 MeV
We examine e+e- --> Ds^-D_s^{*+} and Ds^{*-}Ds^{+} interactions at 4170 MeV
using the CLEO-c detector in order to measure the decay constant fDs with good
precision. Previously our measurements were substantially higher than the most
precise lattice based QCD calculation of (241 +/- 3) MeV. Here we use the D_s^+
--> ell^+ nu channel, where the ell^+ designates either a mu^+ or a tau^+, when
the tau^+ --> pi^+ anti-nu. Analyzing both modes independently, we determine
B(D_s^+ --> mu^+ nu)= 0.565 +/- 0.045 +/- 0.017)%, and B(D_s^+ --> mu^+ nu)=
(6.42 +/- 0.81 +/- 0.18)%. We also analyze them simultaneously to find an
effective value of B^{eff}(D_s^+ --> mu^+ nu)= (0.591 +/- 0.037 +/- 0.018)% and
fDs=(263.3 +/- 8.2 +/- 3.9) MeV. Combining with the CLEO-c value determined
independently using D_s^+ --> tau^+ nu, tau^+ --> e^+ nu anti-nu decays, we
extract fDs=(259.5 +/- 6.6 +/- 3.1) MeV. Combining with our previous
determination of B(D^+ --> mu^+ nu), we extract the ratio fDs/fD+=1.26 +/- 0.06
+/- 0.02. No evidence is found for a CP asymmetry between Gamma(D_s^+ -->
mu^+\nu) and \Gamma(D_s^- --> mu^- nu); specifically the fractional difference
in rates is measured to be (4.8 +/- 6.1)%. Finally, we find B(D_s^+ --> e^+ nu)
< 1.2x10^{-4} at 90% confidence level.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figure
Determination of the D0 -> K+pi- Relative Strong Phase Using Quantum-Correlated Measurements in e+e- -> D0 D0bar at CLEO
We exploit the quantum coherence between pair-produced D0 and D0bar in
psi(3770) decays to study charm mixing, which is characterized by the
parameters x and y, and to make a first determination of the relative strong
phase \delta between doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D0 -> K+pi- and Cabibbo-favored
D0bar -> K+pi-. We analyze a sample of 1.0 million D0D0bar pairs from 281 pb^-1
of e+e- collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E_cm = 3.77 GeV.
By combining CLEO-c measurements with branching fraction input and
time-integrated measurements of R_M = (x^2+y^2)/2 and R_{WS} = Gamma(D0 ->
K+pi-)/Gamma(D0bar -> K+pi-) from other experiments, we find \cos\delta = 1.03
+0.31-0.17 +- 0.06, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic,
respectively. In addition, by further including external measurements of charm
mixing parameters, we obtain an alternate measurement of \cos\delta = 1.10 +-
0.35 +- 0.07, as well as x\sin\delta = (4.4 +2.7-1.8 +- 2.9) x 10^-3 and \delta
= 22 +11-12 +9-11 degrees.Comment: 37 pages, also available through

Search for rare and forbidden decays of charm and charmed-strange mesons to final states h^+- e^-+ e^+
We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and
lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the
form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either \pi or K. We use the complete samples of
CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1
at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^-
pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s
pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level
upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.9 x 10^-6,
B(D^+ --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) K^+ e^+ e^-) < 3.0 x 10^-6,
B(D^+ --> K^- e^+ e^+) \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 2.2 x 10^-5,
B(D^+_s --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) K^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.2 x
10^-5, and B(D^+_s --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 1.7 x 10^-5.Comment: 9 pages, available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS
Measurement of Charm Production Cross Sections in e+e- Annihilation at Energies between 3.97 and 4.26 GeV
Using the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have
measured inclusive and exclusive cross sections for the production of D+, D0
and Ds+ mesons in e+e- annihilations at thirteen center-of-mass energies
between 3.97 and 4.26 GeV. Exclusive cross sections are presented for final
states consisting of two charm mesons (DD, D*D, D*D*, Ds+Ds-, Ds*+Ds-, and
Ds*+Ds*-) and for processes in which the charm-meson pair is accompanied by a
pion. No enhancement in any final state is observed at the energy of the
