AbstractEfforts to control spread of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) are often based on eradication of colonization. However, the role of nasal and non-nasal colonization in the pathogenesis of these infections remains poorly understood. Patients with acute S. aureus skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) were prospectively enrolled. Each subject's nasal, axillary, inguinal and rectal areas were swabbed for S. aureus and epidemiological risk factors were surveyed. Among the 117 patients enrolled, there were 99 patients who had an SSTI and for whom data could be analysed. Sixty-five patients had a CA-MRSA SSTI. Among these patients, MRSA colonization in the nares, axilla, inguinal area and rectum was 25, 6, 11 and 13%, respectively, and 37% overall were MRSA colonized. Most (96%) MRSA colonization was detected using nose and inguinal screening alone. Non-nasal colonization was 25% among CA-MRSA patients, but only 6% among patients with CA-methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) or healthcare-associated MRSA or MSSA. These findings suggest that colonization patterns in CA-MRSA infection are distinct from those in non-CA-MRSA S. aureus infections. The relatively high prevalence of non-nasal colonization may play a key role in CA-MRSA transmission and acquisition of infection

Differential reinforcement of other behavior and response suppression: the effects of the response-reinforcement interval

Three experiments were conducted comparing the effects of the relationship between the response-reinforcement interval and the reinforcement-reinforcement interval in a differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) contingency. The experiments followed an acquisition, treatment, and reacquisition sequence where rats were trained to press a lever for food, were exposed to response elimination contingencies (DRO and extinction), and finally tested for the effectiveness of their respective treatment conditions. Experiment 1 shows that the longer the response-reinforcement interval the more effective the suppressive effects of DRO. Experiment 2 shows that it is the relationship of the response-reinforcement interval to the reinforcement-reinforcement interval that is important for the effectiveness of DRO. Experiment 3 shows that the base schedule used during training can determine the durability of the treatment procedure used. Implications for the applied literature using DRO and extinction are discussed

Geodetic reanalysis of annual glaciological mass balances (2001-2011) of Hintereisferner, Austria

This study presents a reanalysis of the glaciologically obtained annual glacier mass balances at Hintereisferner, Ötztal Alps, Austria, for the period 2001-2011. The reanalysis is accomplished through a comparison with geodetically derived mass changes, using annual high-resolution airborne laser scanning (ALS). The grid-based adjustments for the method-inherent differences are discussed along with associated uncertainties and discrepancies of the two methods of mass balance measurements. A statistical comparison of the two datasets shows no significant difference for seven annual, as well as the cumulative, mass changes over the 10-year record. Yet, the statistical view hides significant differences in the mass balance years 2002/03 (glaciological minus geodetic records=+0.92mw.e.), 2005/06 (+0.60mw.e.), and 2006/07 (-0.45mw.e.). We conclude that exceptional meteorological conditions can render the usual glaciological observational network inadequate. Furthermore, we consider that ALS data reliably reproduce the annual mass balance and can be seen as validation or calibration tools for the glaciological method.(VLID)3146447Version of recor

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tick-borne lymphadenopathy (TIBOLA) was first described in 1997 in a patient in France. The causative agent, <it>Rickettsia slovaca</it>, is transmitted by <it>Dermacentor </it>ticks.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>In southwestern Germany we encountered a patient with a tick bite at the dorsal scalp that resulted in an eschar and nuchal lymphadenopathy. Additionally, fever, malaise as well as elevated inflammatory markers and transaminases occurred. The characteristic clinical picture along with positive antibody testing for rickettsiae of the tick-borne spotted fever group strongly suggest the diagnosis TIBOLA.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Human rickettsioses are emerging infections. Clinicians should be aware of TIBOLA as a newly described rickettsial disease. As in our case, TIBOLA may be encountered in regions/countries where <it>R. slovaca </it>and <it>Dermacentor </it>ticks are prevalent but autochthonous acquisition was not described before.</p

As a key point in the optimization design of traction gears of the railway rolling stock, a procedure for a reasonable choice of the coefficients for the displacement of gears and wheels is provided by using the appropriate blocking circuits. The relevance of studies on the development of methodological support for the rational production of blocking contours in the design of traction-toothed gears is substantiated. The developed mathematical dependences connecting the fixed values of the limiting and controlled parameters of the gears with the numbers of the teeth and the gearing coefficients of the gears and wheels are presented. Their use makes it possible to obtain specific blocking contours for the selection of gear and wheel bias coefficients in the optimization design of traction gears with different initial parameters. An example of the practical implementation of the developed mathematical dependencies in obtaining a blocking contour for selecting the gear displacement coefficients and the traction gear wheel of a modern mainline freight locomotive is given. The conclusion is made about the expediency of using the proposed methodological support in the optimization design of traction gears
