Mechanism problems
It is pointed out that too frequently during the design and development of mechanisms, problems occur that could have been avoided if the right question had been asked before, rather than after, the fact. Several typical problems, drawn from actual experience, are discussed and analyzed. The lessons learned are used to generate various suggestions for minimizing mistakes in mechanism design
Quantum point contact conductance in NINS junctions
The effect of an insulating barrier located at a distance from a NS
quantum point contact is analyzed in this work. The Bogoliubov de Gennes
equations are solved for NINS junctions (S: anysotropic superconductor, I:
insulator and N: normal metal), where the NIN region is a quantum wire. For , bound states and resonances in the differential conductance are
predicted. These resonances depend on the symmetry of the pair potential, the
strength of the insulating barrier and . Our results show that in a NINS
quantum point contact the number of resonances vary with the symmetry of the
order parameter. This is to be contrasted with the results for the NINS
junction, in which only the position of the resonances changes with the

Young Stars with SALT
We present a spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of 79 nearby M dwarfs in 77
systems. All are low-proper-motion southern hemisphere objects and were
identified in a nearby star survey with a demonstrated sensitivity to young
stars. Using low-resolution optical spectroscopy from the Red Side Spectrograph
(RSS) on the South African Large Telescope (SALT), we have determined radial
velocities, H-alpha, Lithium 6708\AA, and Potassium 7699\AA~equivalent widths
linked to age and activity, and spectral types for all our targets. Combined
with astrometric information from literature sources, we identify 44 young
stars. Eighteen are previously known members of moving groups within 100
parsecs of the Sun. Twelve are new members, including one member of the TW
Hydra moving group, one member of the 32 Orionis moving group, nine members of
Tucana-Horologium, one member of Argus, and two new members of AB Doradus. We
also find fourteen young star systems that are not members of any known groups.
The remaining 33 star systems do not appear to be young. This appears to be
evidence of a new population of nearby young stars not related to the known

Performance of differenced range data types in Voyager navigation
Voyager radio navigation made use of a differenced rage data type for both Saturn encounters because of the low declination singularity of Doppler data. Nearly simultaneous two-way range from two-station baselines was explicitly differenced to produce this data type. Concurrently, a differential VLBI data type (DDOR), utilizing doubly differenced quasar-spacecraft delays, with potentially higher precision was demonstrated. Performance of these data types is investigated on the Jupiter-to-Saturn leg of Voyager 2. The statistics of performance are presented in terms of actual data noise comparisons and sample orbit estimates. Use of DDOR as a primary data type for navigation to Uranus is discussed
Identification of prodromal presentations of Parkinson's disease among primary care outpatients in Germany
Background: This study aimed to identify clinical features that predate the diagnosis of PD in a primary care setting. Methods: This retrospective case-control study was based on data from the Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA) and included 17,702 patients with Parkinson's disease and 17,702 non-PD controls matched for age, sex, and index year. We analyzed the prevalence of 15 defined diagnoses and symptoms documented within 2 years, ≥2 to <5, and ≥5 to <10 years prior to the index date in patients with and without PD. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between PD and the predefined diagnoses. Results: The prevalence of motor, neuropsychiatric and autonomic features was higher in those with a later diagnosis of Parkinson's disease than controls for all three periods except for rigidity in the ≥2 to <5 and ≥5 to <10-year periods and erectile dysfunction in the most recent period before diagnosis. The clinical presentation recorded in the greatest percentage of patients was depression, followed by dizziness, insomnia, and constipation, but these were also common in the control population. The odds ratios were highest for increase in tremor, followed by balance impairment and memory problems, particularly in the latest period before diagnosis, and by constipation particularly in the earliest period examined. Conclusion: The prodromal features of PD could be identified in this large primary care database in Germany with similar results to those found in previous database studies despite differences in methodologies and systems
Frohlich mass in GaAs-based structures
The Frohlich interaction is one of the main electron-phonon intrinsic
interactions in polar materials originating from the coupling of one itinerant
electron with the macroscopic electric field generated by any longitudinal
optical (LO) phonon. Infra-red magneto-absorption measurements of doped GaAs
quantum wells structures have been carried out in order to test the concept of
Frohlich interaction and polaron mass in such systems. These new experimental
results lead to question the validity of this concept in a real system.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
