Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Crack Parameter Identification in Elastic Plate Structures based on Remote Strain Fields

AbstractIn this work two different methods for the detection of cracks in plate structures are presented. In fact, the methods exploit strains measured at different locations on the surface of a structure. Solving the inverse problem, this allows both the identication of crack position parameters, such as length, location and angles with respect to a reference coordinate system and the calculation of stress intensity factors (SIF). First, the solution of the direct problem is obtained e.g. by using the BFM (body force method), substituting the crack by distributed point loads leading to strain fields by superposition of fundamental solutions. On the other hand, the dislocation technique is applied particularly to bounded structures and inclined crack paths. The inverse problem is solved applying the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Experiments are performed under cyclic loading using pre- cracked plates made of the aluminum alloy Al-7075

The study of metaphor as part of Critical Discourse Analysis

This article discusses how the study of metaphoric and more generally, figurative language use contributes to critical discourse analysis (CDA). It shows how cognitive linguists’ recognition of metaphor as a fundamental means of concept- and argument-building can add to CDA's account of meaning constitution in the social context. It then discusses discrepancies between the early model of conceptual metaphor theory and empirical data and argues that discursive-pragmatic factors as well as sociolinguistic variation have to be taken into account in order to make cognitive analyses more empirically and socially relevant. In conclusion, we sketch a modified cognitive approach informed by Relevance Theory within CDA

Constructing Memory through Television in Argentina

    Get PDF
Television represents Argentina’s recent past through three specific links with social memory: as an “entrepreneur of memory,” shaping public agendas, as a vehicle of intergenerational transmission of past events, and as a creator of meaning through images, sounds, and words, a “stage for memory”. An analysis in terms of the links between television and the memories constructed around the forced disappearance of persons during the 1976–1983 military dictatorship reveals the complex way in which the obstacles when narrating an extreme experience are combined with the attempt to sell a product and entertain the spectator.Fil: Feld, Claudia Viviana.
