Anemia in the elderly and treatment

A partir de los 60 años de edad la aparición de anemia de origen incierto es algo muy frecuente en la población anciana. Por lo pronto, a nivel medular hay una tendencia a la aparición de sustancia grasa que sustituye al tejido habitual. En segundo lugar está demostrado que la capacidad de respuesta de la médula se atenúa y la presencia de algún tipo de neoplasias es más frecuente a partir de esta edad. Ello lleva a la aparición de algún tipo de trastorno en el sistema hematopoyético. El objetivo de esta revisión es analizar las causas más frecuentes de anemia en el anciano y revisar los posibles tratamientos.Anemia of uncertain origin is very common in the elderly population. In bone marrow there is a tendency to the appearance of fatty substance that replaces the normal tissue. Second is shown that the responsiveness of the bone marrow is attenuated and the presence of any malignancy is more common after this age. This leads to the appearance of some kind of disruption in the hematopoietic system. Pleuropericarditis as the single sign of infection by Legionella pneumophila

Pleural effusion caused by Legionella is seen fairly frequently but is hardly ever of great clinical significance. Pericardial involvement has been described only rarely. We present a case of pleuropericarditis as the only sign of infection by Legionella pneumophila in a 66-years-old man with no prior history of disease. The patient came to the hospital with chest pain suggestive of pleurisy, low-grade fever, dry cough and dyspnea. The etiology was not suspected and the diagnosis was made retrospectively based on indirect immunofluorescence. After 3 weeks of treatment with high dose of erythromycin the patient recovered and remains asymptomatic to date. We conclude that infection by Legionella pneumophila should be suspected in patients with pleurisy or pericarditis of unknown cause

Revisando mis vivencias y para no ser aburrido, quisiera mostrar algunos casos clínicos, que no son «clínicos» o puramente médicos, sino vitales, sociales o casos vivos.
