Predicting academic success in optometry school

Introduction: Predicting success in optometry school is a challenging task which involves evaluating many academic and non-academic qualities. This study aids in the process of selecting candidates who are likely to be successful in the challenging optometric curriculum. Methods: Optometry Admission Test (OAT) scores, interview scores, and undergraduate and optometry grade point averages (GPA) were gathered for 175 students admitted to Pacific University College of Optometry in 2001 and 2002. At-test compared characteristics of students who failed at least one didactic course in optometry school with students who passed all optometry courses. Regression analysis was then used to establish equations to predict academic performance. Results and Discussion: All undergraduate GPA variables and most OAT subsections demonstrated a significant difference between students who failed an optometry course and those who did not. Reading Comprehension OAT, Physics OAT, and the interview score did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Three equations were developed to help predict GPA in optometry school and to predict the probability of a student failing an optometric course. Conclusion: The equations discussed can be used by admission committees as one tool to help in the application process and to predict success prior to admitting optometlic students

Racial differences between African-American and white women in insulin resistance and visceral adiposity are associated with differences in apoCIII containing apoAI and apoB lipoproteins

Background: African-Americans have higher HDL, less visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and lower triglyceride (TG) and apoCIII concentrations than whites, despite being more insulin-resistant. We studied in African-American and white women the influences of insulin resistance and VAT on the apoAI concentrations of two HDL subspecies, one that contains apoCIII that is associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and one that does not have apoCIII that is associated with decreased CHD; and on the apoCIII concentrations of HDL and of the apoB lipoproteins. Methods: The participants were 32 women (14 African-Americans, 18 white) of similar age (39 ± 12 vs. 42 ± 11y). Mean BMI was 34 kg/m2 in the African-Americans compared to 30 in the whites. A standard diet (33% fat, 52% carbohydrate, 15% protein) was provided for 7 days followed by a test meal (40% fat, 40% carbohydrate, 20% protein) on Day 8. Insulin sensitivity index (SI) was calculated from the minimal model. Results: After controlling for SI, African-Americans have a higher mean apoAI level in HDL with apoCIII compared with whites (12.9 ± 2.8 and 10.9 ± 2.9 mg/dL, respectively, P = 0.05). SI was associated with higher apoAI in HDL with apoCIII, whereas VAT was not associated with this HDL subspecies. This pattern of results was reversed for apoCIII concentrations in apoB lipoproteins. After adjusting for SI, African-Americans had lower apoCIII in apoB lipoproteins. SI was associated with lower apoCIII in total apoB lipoproteins, whereas VAT was associated with higher apoCIII in all the apoB lipoproteins. Additional adjustment for VAT tended to reduce the difference in apoCIII between the groups. Conclusions: African-American women have a higher HDL with apoCIII level than whites when controlled for insulin sensitivity. African-Americans have lower insulin sensitivity. Insulin sensitivity is associated with higher levels of HDL with apoCIII. ApoCIII levels in VLDL are lower in African-American women than whites, also affected by insulin sensitivity which is associated with low apoCIII in VLDL. VAT has a strong association with apoCIII in apoB lipoproteins but not with apoAI in HDL with apoCIII. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT0048486

Performance requirements analysis for payload delivery from a space station

Operations conducted from a space station in low Earth orbit which have different constraints and opportunities than those conducted from direct Earth launch were examined. While a space station relieves many size and performance constraints on the space shuttle, the space station's inertial orbit has different launch window constraints from those associated with customary Earth launches which reflect upon upper stage capability. A performance requirements analysis was developed to provide a reference source of parametric data, and specific case solutions and upper stage sizing trade to assist potential space station users and space station and upper stage developers assess the impacts of a space station on missions of interest

An S2 Fluorescence Model for Interpreting High-Resolution Cometary Spectra. I. Model Description and Initial Results

A new versatile model providing S2 fluorescence spectrum as a function of time is developed with the aim of interpreting high resolution cometary spectra. For the S2 molecule, it is important to take into account both chemical and dynamic processes because S2 has a short lifetime and is confined in the inner coma where these processes are most important. The combination of the fluorescence model with a global coma model allows for the comparison with observations of column densities taken through an aperture and for the analysis of S2 fluorescence in different parts of the coma. Moreover, the model includes the rotational structure of the molecule. Such a model is needed for interpreting recent high spectral resolution observations of cometary S2. A systematic study of the vibrational-rotational spectrum of S2 is undertaken, including relevant effects, such as non-equilibrium state superposition and the number density profile within the coma due to dynamics and chemistry, to investigate the importance of the above effects on the scale length and abundance of S2 in comets.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

Artificial Neural Network based on SQUIDs: demonstration of network training and operation

We propose a scheme for the realization of artificial neural networks based on Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). In order to demonstrate the operation of this scheme we designed and successfully tested a small network that implements a XOR gate and is trained by means of examples. The proposed scheme can be particularly convenient as support for superconducting applications such as detectors for astrophysics, high energy experiments, medicine imaging and so on.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

Phase transition kinetics revealed in laser-heated dynamic diamond anvil cells

We report on a novel approach to dynamic compression of materials that bridges the gap between previous static- and dynamic- compression techniques, allowing to explore a wide range of pathways in the pressure-temperature space. By combining a dynamic-diamond anvil cell setup with double-sided laser-heating and in situ X-ray diffraction, we are able to perform dynamic compression at high temperature and characterize structural transitions with unprecedented time resolution. Using this method, we investigate the γ−ϵ\gamma-\epsilon phase transition of iron under dynamic compression for the first time, reaching compression rates of hundreds of GPa/s and temperatures of 2000 K. Our results demonstrate a distinct response of the γ−ϵ\gamma-\epsilon and α−ϵ\alpha-\epsilon transitions to the high compression rates achieved. These findings open up new avenues to study tailored dynamic compression pathways in the pressure-temperature space and highlight the potential of this platform to capture kinetic effects in a diamond anvil cell.Comment: Reworked the text and figures to be more in line with the format of PR
