Background, current status, and prognosis of the ongoing slush hydrogen technology development program for the NASP
Among the Hydrogen Projects at the NASA Lewis Research Center (NASA LeRC), is the task of implementing and managing the Slush Hydrogen (SLH2) Technology Program for the United States' National AeroSpace Plane Joint Program Office (NASP JPO). The objectives of this NASA LeRC program are to provide verified numerical models of fluid production, storage, transfer, and feed systems and to provide verified design criteria for other engineered aspects of SLH2 systems germane to a NASP. The pursuit of these objectives is multidimensional, covers a range of problem areas, works these to different levels of depth, and takes advantage of the resources available in private industry, academia, and the U.S. Government. A summary of the NASA LeRC overall SLH2 program plan, is presented along with its implementation, the present level of effort in each of the program areas, some of the results already in hand, and the prognosis for the effort in the immediate future
How branching can change the conductance of ballistic semiconductor devices
We demonstrate that branching of the electron flow in semiconductor
nanostructures can strongly affect macroscopic transport quantities and can
significantly change their dependence on external parameters compared to the
ideal ballistic case even when the system size is much smaller than the mean
free path. In a corner-shaped ballistic device based on a GaAs/AlGaAs
two-dimensional electron gas we observe a splitting of the commensurability
peaks in the magnetoresistance curve. We show that a model which includes a
random disorder potential of the two-dimensional electron gas can account for
the random splitting of the peaks that result from the collimation of the
electron beam. The shape of the splitting depends on the particular realization
of the disorder potential. At the same time magnetic focusing peaks are largely
unaffected by the disorder potential.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Decoherence vs entanglement in coined quantum walks
Quantum versions of random walks on the line and cycle show a quadratic
improvement in their spreading rate and mixing times respectively. The addition
of decoherence to the quantum walk produces a more uniform distribution on the
line, and even faster mixing on the cycle by removing the need for
time-averaging to obtain a uniform distribution. We calculate numerically the
entanglement between the coin and the position of the quantum walker and show
that the optimal decoherence rates are such that all the entanglement is just
removed by the time the final measurement is made.Comment: 11 pages, 6 embedded eps figures; v2 improved layout and discussio
Coordination-driven magnetic-to-nonmagnetic transition in manganese doped silicon clusters
The interaction of a single manganese impurity with silicon is analyzed in a
combined experimental and theoretical study of the electronic, magnetic, and
structural properties of manganese-doped silicon clusters. The structural
transition from exohedral to endohedral doping coincides with a quenching of
high-spin states. For all geometric structures investigated, we find a similar
dependence of the magnetic moment on the manganese coordination number and
nearest neighbor distance. This observation can be generalized to manganese
point defects in bulk silicon, whose magnetic moments fall within the observed
magnetic-to-nonmagnetic transition, and which therefore react very sensitively
to changes in the local geometry. The results indicate that high spin states in
manganese-doped silicon could be stabilized by an appropriate lattice
expansion
Observation of a Chiral State in a Microwave Cavity
A microwave experiment has been realized to measure the phase difference of
the oscillating electric field at two points inside the cavity. The technique
has been applied to a dissipative resonator which exhibits a singularity --
called exceptional point -- in its eigenvalue and eigenvector spectrum. At the
singularity, two modes coalesce with a phase difference of We
conclude that the state excited at the singularity has a definitiv chirality.Comment: RevTex 4, 5 figure

A Millimeter-wave Galactic Plane Survey with the BICEP Polarimeter
In order to study inflationary cosmology and the Milky Way Galaxy's composition and magnetic field structure, Stokes I, Q, and U maps of the Galactic plane covering the Galactic longitude range 260° < ℓ < 340° in three atmospheric transmission windows centered on 100, 150, and 220 GHz are presented. The maps sample an optical depth 1 ≾ AV ≾ 30, and are consistent with previous characterizations of the Galactic millimeter-wave frequency spectrum and the large-scale magnetic field structure permeating the interstellar medium. The polarization angles in all three bands are generally perpendicular to those measured by starlight polarimetry as expected and show changes in the structure of the Galactic magnetic field on the scale of 60°. The frequency spectrum of degree-scale Galactic emission is plotted between 23 and 220 GHz (including WMAP data) and is fit to a two-component (synchrotron and dust) model showing that the higher frequency BICEP data are necessary to tightly constrain the amplitude and spectral index of Galactic dust. Polarized emission is detected over the entire region within two degrees of the Galactic plane, indicating the large-scale magnetic field is oriented parallel to the plane of the Galaxy. A trend of decreasing polarization fraction with increasing total intensity is observed, ruling out the simplest model of a constant Galactic magnetic field orientation along the line of sight in the Galactic plane. A generally increasing trend of polarization fraction with electromagnetic frequency is found, varying from 0.5%-1.5% at frequencies below 50 GHz to 2.5%-3.5% above 90 GHz. The effort to extend the capabilities of BICEP by installing 220 GHz band hardware is described along with analysis of the new band
Lattice distortions in a sawtooth chain with Heisenberg and Ising bonds
An exactly solvable model of the sawtooth chain with Ising and Heisenberg
bonds and with coupling to lattice distortion for Heisenberg bonds is
considered in the magnetic field. Using the direct transfer-matrix formalism an
exact description of the thermodynamic functions is obtained. The ground state
phase diagrams for all regions of parameters values containing phases
corresponding to the magnetization plateaus at and 1/2 have been
obtained. Exact formulas for bond distortions for various ground states are
presented. A novel mechanism of magnetization plateau stabilization
corresponding to state is reported.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure
The BNO-LNGS joint measurement of the solar neutrino capture rate in 71Ga
We describe a cooperative measurement of the capture rate of solar neutrinos
by the reaction 71Ga(\nu_e,e^-)71Ge. Extractions were made from a portion of
the gallium target in the Russian-American Gallium Experiment SAGE and the
extraction samples were transported to the Gran Sasso laboratory for synthesis
and counting at the Gallium Neutrino Observatory GNO. Six extractions of this
type were made and the resultant solar neutrino capture rate was 64
^{+24}_{-22} SNU, which agrees well with the overall result of the gallium
experiments. The major purpose of this experiment was to make it possible for
SAGE to continue their regular schedule of monthly solar neutrino extractions
without interruption while a separate experiment was underway to measure the
response of 71Ga to neutrinos from an 37Ar source. As side benefits, this
experiment proved the feasibility of long-distance sample transport in ultralow
background radiochemical experiments and familiarized each group with the
methods and techniques of the other.Comment: 7 pages, no figures; minor additions in version
