Enacted task design: tasks as written in the classroom

This paper presents and describes the construct of enacted task design, which considers the way tasks are “written” (designed) by teachers. Two enactments by different teachers based on the same written algebra task were analyzed and compared using the math story framework (Dietiker, 2015). Variations in these stories highlight four dimensions of the teacher’s design work

Natural entropy fluctuations discriminate similar looking electric signals emitted from systems of different dynamics

Complexity measures are introduced, that quantify the change of the natural entropy fluctuations at different length scales in time-series emitted from systems operating far from equilibrium. They identify impending sudden cardiac death (SD) by analyzing fifteen minutes electrocardiograms, and comparing to those of truly healthy humans (H). These measures seem to be complementary to the ones suggested recently [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 70}, 011106 (2004)] and altogether enable the classification of individuals into three categories: H, heart disease patients and SD. All the SD individuals, who exhibit critical dynamics, result in a common behavior.Comment: Published in Physical Review

Applying the Socio-Ecological Model to barriers to implementation of ACL injury prevention programs: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Background: Preventing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries is important to avoid long-term adverse health consequences. Identifying barriers to implementation of these prevention programs is crucial to reducing the incidence of these injuries. Our purpose was to identify barriers of implementation for ACL injury prevention programs and suggest mechanisms for reducing the barriers through application of a SocioEcological Model (SEM). Methods: Studies investigating ACL prevention program effectiveness were searched in Medline via PubMed and the Cochrane Library, and a subsequent review of the references of the identified articles, yielded 15 articles total. Inclusion criteria encompassed prospective controlled trials, published in English, with ACL injuries as the primary outcome. Studies were independently appraised by 2 reviewers for methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Barriers to implementation were identified when reported in at least 2 separate studies. A SEM was used to suggest ways to reduce the identified barriers. Results: Five barriers were identified: motivation, time requirements, skill requirements for program facilitators, compliance, and cost. The SEM suggested ways to minimize the barriers at all levels of the model from the individual through policy levels. Conclusion: Identification of barriers to program implementation and suggesting how to reduce them through the SEM is a critical first step toward enabling ACL prevention programs to be more effective and ultimately reducing the incidence of these injurie

Hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention in boys with cleft lip and palate: relationship to ventromedial prefrontal cortex morphology

The purpose of this study is to evaluate quantitative structural measures of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in boys with isolated clefts of the lip and/or palate (ICLP) relative to a comparison group and to associate measures of brain structure with quantitative measures of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness. A total of 50 boys with ICLP were compared to 60 healthy boys without clefts. Magnetic resonance imaging brain scans were used to evaluate vmPFC structure. Parents and teachers provided quantitative measures of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness using the Pediatric Behavior Scale. Boys with ICLP had significantly higher ratings of hyperactivity/impulsivity/inattention (HII) and significantly increased volume of the right vmPFC relative to the comparison group. There was a direct relationship between HII score and vmPFC volume in both the ICLP group and control group, but the relationship was in the opposite direction: in ICLP, the higher the vmPFC volume, the higher the HII score; for the comparison group, the lower the vmPFC volume, the greater the HII score. The vmPFC is a region of the brain that governs behaviors of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention (HII). In boys with ICLP, there are higher levels of HII compared to the controls and this is directly related to a significantly enlarged volume of the right vmPFC. Enlargement of this region of the brain is therefore considered to be pathological in the ICLP group and supports the notion that abnormal brain structure (from abnormal brain development) is the underlying etiology for the abnormal behaviors seen in this population

    Granular Rheology in Zero Gravity

We present an experimental investigation on the rheological behavior of model granular media made of nearly elastic spherical particles. The experiments are performed in a cylindrical Couette geometry and the experimental device is placed inside an airplane undergoing parabolic flights to cancel the effect of gravity. The corresponding curves, shear stress versus shear rate, are presented and a comparison with existing theories is proposed. The quadratic dependence on the shear rate is clearly shown and the behavior as a function of the solid volume fraction of particles exhibits a power law function. It is shown that theoretical predictions overestimate the experiments. We observe, at intermediate volume fractions, the formation of rings of particles regularly spaced along the height of the cell. The differences observed between experimental results and theoretical predictions are discussed and related to the structures formed in the granular medium submitted to the external shear.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures to be published in Journal of Physics : Condensed Matte

Instability of the symmetric Couette-flow in a granular gas: hydrodynamic field profiles and transport

We investigate the inelastic hard disk gas sheared by two parallel bumpy walls (Couette-flow). In our molecular dynamic simulations we found a sensitivity to the asymmetries of the initial condition of the particle places and velocities and an asymmetric stationary state, where the deviation from (anti)symmetric hydrodynamic fields is stronger as the normal restitution coefficient decreases. For the better understanding of this sensitivity we carried out a linear stability analysis of the former kinetic theoretical solution [Jenkins and Richman: J. Fluid. Mech. {\bf 171} (1986)] and found it to be unstable. The effect of this asymmetry on the self-diffusion coefficient is also discussed.Comment: 9 pages RevTeX, 14 postscript figures, sent to Phys. Incidence of transient congenital hypothyroidism due to maternal thyrotropin receptor-blocking antibodies in over one million babies

    Get PDF
To determine the incidence of transient congenital hypothyroidism due to TSH receptor-blocking antibodies, we screened dried blood specimens obtained from 788 neonates identified as having possible congenital hypothyroidism (from a total population of 1,614,166 babies) and 121 controls. A RRA was used. The potency of blood spot TSH binding inhibitory activity was compared with the severity of congenital hypothyroidism to assess the possible etiological relationship. Maternal serum was studied to confirm the presence of blocking antibodies by both RRA and bioassay. Blood spots obtained from 9 infants contained potent TSH receptor-blocking activity. Samples from 2 additional babies, studied because of clinical suspicion of the disease, were also positive. Long term outcome was known in 8 of the 11 babies, and all had transient disease. Neonates with TSH receptor-blocking activity greater than 132 U/L had a significantly lower T4 level (P \u3c 0.05) and higher TSH (P \u3c 0.005) than those in whom TSH binding-inhibitory activity was less than 132 U/L. All 9 mothers had autoimmune thyroid disease, and 3 had more than 1 affected child. Potent blocking activity was present in 7 maternal serum samples as long as 7 yr after the births of their affected babies. We conclude that measurement of TSH binding-inhibitory activity in dried neonatal blood specimens is a simple and effective method to predict the occurrence of transient congenital hypothyroidism. The incidence of this disorder in North America is 1 in 180,000 normal infants, or approximately 2% of babies with congenital hypothyroidism

    Point perturbations of circle billiards

The spectral statistics of the circular billiard with a point-scatterer is investigated. In the semiclassical limit, the spectrum is demonstrated to be composed of two uncorrelated level sequences. The first corresponds to states for which the scatterer is located in the classically forbidden region and its energy levels are not affected by the scatterer in the semiclassical limit while the second sequence contains the levels which are affected by the point-scatterer. The nearest neighbor spacing distribution which results from the superposition of these sequences is calculated analytically within some approximation and good agreement with the distribution that was computed numerically is found.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

Eclipse studies of the dwarf-nova Ex Draconis

We report on high speed photometry of EX Dra in quiescence and in outburst. The analysis of the lightcurves indicates that the outbursts do not start in the outer disc regions. The disc expands during rise to maximum and shrinks during decline and along the quiescent period. At the end of two outbursts the system was seen to go through a phase of lower brightness, characterized by an out-of-eclipse level ~15 per cent lower than the typical quiescent level and by the fairly symmetric eclipse of a compact source at disc centre with little evidence of a bright spot at disc rim. New eclipse timings were measured and a revised ephemeris was derived. The residuals with respect to the linear ephemeris are well described by a sinusoid of amplitude 1.2 minutes and period \~4 years and are possibly related to a solar-like magnetic activity cycle in the secondary star. Eclipse phases of the compact central source and of the bright spot were used to derive the geometry of the binary. By constraining the gas stream trajectory to pass through the observed position of the bright spot we find q=0.72+/-0.06 and i= 85 +3/-2 degrees. The binary parameters were estimated by combining the measured mass ratio with the assumption that the secondary star obeys an empirical main sequence mass-radius relation. We find M_1= 0.75+/-0.15 M_sun and M_2= 0.54+/-0.10 M_sun. The white dwarf at disc centre is surrounded by an extended and variable atmosphere or boundary layer of at least 3 times its radius and a temperature of T ~28000 K. The fluxes at mid-eclipse yield an upper limit to the contribution of the secondary star and lead to a lower limit photometric parallax distance of D= 290+/-80 pc. The fluxes of the secondary star are well matched by those of a M0+/-2 main sequence star.Comment: submitted to MNRAS, 12 pages, 9 figures; coded with MNRAS latex styl
