Importance of Estrus Expression Before Fixed-time AIon Conception Rates in Beef Cattle
Expression of estrus prior to fixed-time AI has been reported to strongly impact overall pregnancy success. Behavioral estrus is a visual indicator that a cow or heifer’s internal environment is prepared for breeding. Insemination of a cow or heifer after estrus has been expressed will yield greater pregnancy success due to adequate uterine environment, increased fertilization rates, increased accessory sperm numbers, and increased overall embryo survival. It can be difficult to analyze the effects of estrus on pregnancy success across studies due to differences in number of animals and proportion of animals exhibiting estrus per study. In order to accurately analyze such data, a meta-analysis was used to place all studies on an equal level, thus, eliminating study bias. In the present study, a meta-analysis was conducted using data available on 10,116 beef cows and heifers in 26 studies that utilized the 5 most common fixed-time AI protocols to examine the effect of expression of estrus prior to insemination on conception rates. The overall model indicated a positive effect of estrus on conception rates with cows expressing estrus before fixed-time AI having greater conception rates compared with those not exhibiting estrus. There are also numerous management factors that can influence expression of estrus. Data were available on 547 cows that were synchronized with a CIDR based fixed-time AI protocol for estrus for 2 to 4 years. Analysis of these cows indicated that days postpartum did not impact estrus expression. In contrast, Body Condition Score (BCS) influenced estrus expression with cows in a BCS of ≤ 4 having decreased expression of estrus compared to those with a BCS \u3e 4. Initiation of estrous cycles before the breeding season also influenced estrus expression, with anestrous cows having greater expression of estrus compared with estrus-cycling cows. Fixed-time AI protocols offer producers the added benefit of reduced labor needed for heat detection, but the results of this study indicate the importance of detecting an animal in estrus prior to breeding. In conclusion, among all currently recommended fixed-time AI protocols, cows expressing estrus before fixed-time AI had improved conception rates, and BCS and estrus-cycling status had the greatest influence on expression of estrus

Optical Bumps in Cosmological GRBs as Supernovae
From both photometric and broadband spectral monitoring of gamma-ray burst
(GRB) lightcurve ``bumps,'' particularly in GRB 011121, a strong case grew for
a supernova (SN) origin. The GRB-SN connection was finally solidified beyond a
reasonable doubt with the discovery that the bump in GRB 030329 was
spectroscopically similar to a bright Type Ic SN. In light of this result, I
redress the previous SN bump claims and conclude that 1) the distribution of
GRB-SN bump peak magnitudes is consistent with the local Type Ibc SNe peak
distribution and suggest that 2) the late-time bumps in all long-duration GRBs

Robust Henderson III estimators of variance components in the nested error model
Common methods for estimating variance components in Linear Mixed Models include Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML). These methods are based on the strong assumption of multivariate normal distribution and it is well know that they are very sensitive to outlying observations with respect to any of the random components. Several robust altematives of these methods have been proposed (e.g. Fellner 1986, Richardson and Welsh 1995). In this work we present several robust alternatives based on the Henderson method III which do not rely on the normality assumption and provide explicit solutions for the variance components estimators. These estimators can later be used to derive robust estimators of regression coefficients. Finally, we describe an application of this procedure to small area estimation, in which the main target is the estimation of the means of areas or domains when the within-area sample sizes are small
Inverse Probability Weights for the Analysis of Polytomous Outcomes
Polytomous outcomes are common in epidemiologic studies. Analyses based on multinomial models employ a likelihood that utilizes the data observed in all outcome categories simultaneously and permits inferences regarding associations across outcome categories. However, the potentially large number of estimated parameters produced by multinomial model fitting can lead to problems of estimation and inference (1). We have proposed an inverse-probability-of-exposure weighted multinomial model for analysis of polytomous outcomes, described its implementation, and illustrated it. The approach yields marginal estimates of associations, which are sometimes desirable as summary measures of association (2). This approach allows for confounding control and tends to be less susceptible to problems of estimation that arise when at least one outcome category is rare
Instability of the rhodium magnetic moment as origin of the metamagnetic phase transition in alpha-FeRh
Based on ab initio total energy calculations we show that two magnetic states
of rhodium atoms together with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic
exchange interactions are responsible for a temperature induced metamagnetic
phase transition, which experimentally is observed for stoichiometric
alpha-FeRh. A first-principle spin-based model allows to reproduce this
first-order metamagnetic transition by means of Monte Carlo simulations.
Further inclusion of spacial variation of exchange parameters leads to a

Association between Reimbursement Incentives and Physician Practice in Oncology: A Systematic Review
Importance: Significant controversy exists regarding whether physicians factor personal financial considerations into their clinical decision making. Within oncology, several reimbursement policies may incentivize physicians to increase health care use. Objective: To evaluate whether the financial incentives presented by oncology reimbursement policies affect physician practice patterns. Evidence Review: Studies evaluating an association between reimbursement incentives and changes in reimbursement policy on oncology care delivery were reviewed. Articles were identified systematically by searching PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Proquest Health Management, Econlit, and Business Source Premier. English-language articles focused on the US health care system that made empirical estimates of the association between a measurement of physician reimbursement/compensation and a measurement of delivery of cancer treatment services were included. The Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions tool was used to assess risk of bias. There were no date restrictions on the publications, and literature searches were finalized on February 14, 2018. Findings: Eighteen studies were included. All were observational cohort studies, and most had a moderate risk of bias. Heterogeneity of reimbursement policies and outcomes precluded meta-analysis; therefore, a qualitative synthesis was performed. Most studies (15 of 18 [83%]) reported an association between reimbursement and care delivery consistent with physician responsiveness to financial incentives, although such an association was not identified in all studies. Findings consistently suggested that self-referral arrangements may increase use of radiotherapy and that profitability of systemic anticancer agents may affect physicians' choice of drug. Findings were less conclusive as to whether profitability of systemic anticancer therapy affects the decision of whether to use any systemic therapy. Conclusions and Relevance: To date, this study is the first systematic review of reimbursement policy and clinical care delivery in oncology. The findings suggest that some oncologists may, in certain circumstances, alter treatment recommendations based on personal revenue considerations. An implication of this finding is that value-based reimbursement policies may be a useful tool to better align physician incentives with patient need and increase the value of oncology care
Discrete molecular dynamics simulations of peptide aggregation
We study the aggregation of peptides using the discrete molecular dynamics
simulations. At temperatures above the alpha-helix melting temperature of a
single peptide, the model peptides aggregate into a multi-layer parallel
beta-sheet structure. This structure has an inter-strand distance of 0.48 nm
and an inter-sheet distance of 1.0 nm, which agree with experimental
observations. In this model, the hydrogen bond interactions give rise to the
inter-strand spacing in beta-sheets, while the Go interactions among side
chains make beta-strands parallel to each other and allow beta-sheets to pack
into layers. The aggregates also contain free edges which may allow for further
aggregation of model peptides to form elongated fibrils.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
Theory of band gap bowing of disordered substitutional II-VI and III-V semiconductor alloys
For a wide class of technologically relevant compound III-V and II-VI
semiconductor materials AC and BC mixed crystals (alloys) of the type
A(x)B(1-x)C can be realized. As the electronic properties like the bulk band
gap vary continuously with x, any band gap in between that of the pure AC and
BC systems can be obtained by choosing the appropriate concentration x, granted
that the respective ratio is miscible and thermodynamically stable. In most
cases the band gap does not vary linearly with x, but a pronounced bowing
behavior as a function of the concentration is observed. In this paper we show
that the electronic properties of such A(x)B(1-x)C semiconductors and, in
particular, the band gap bowing can well be described and understood starting
from empirical tight binding models for the pure AC and BC systems. The
electronic properties of the A(x)B(1-x)C system can be described by choosing
the tight-binding parameters of the AC or BC system with probabilities x and
1-x, respectively. We demonstrate this by exact diagonalization of finite but
large supercells and by means of calculations within the established coherent
potential approximation (CPA). We apply this treatment to the II-VI system
Cd(x)Zn(1-x)Se, to the III-V system In(x)Ga(1-x)As and to the III-nitride

Present Effects of Past Wildfires on Leaf Litter Breakdown in Stream Ecosystems
We investigated the present effects from a 10-year-old wildfire on leaf litter breakdown rates in 3 headwater streams in central Idaho. These systems experienced a massive debris flow one year after the fire. Based on soil instability and burn patterns, we identified 3 stream conditions: unburned, burned only, and burned/scoured. We placed leaf bags containing willow leaves (Salix sp.) in each stream type and removed bags at various time intervals until all bags were collected 100 days after their introduction. Leaf material was dried and weighed, and decay rate coefficients were calculated. Macroinvertebrates colonizing the bags were enumerated and identified, and selected taxa were placed into trophic groups. We found that the unburned stream had the fastest leaf litter breakdown rate, the lowest level of incident light reaching the stream, and the largest amount of benthic organic matter. The burned/scoured stream was nearly opposite in all respects. Numbers of 2 detritivore invertebrate taxa, Serratella tibialis and Zapada oregonensis, were highest in the unburned stream but lowest in the burned/scoured stream. A third taxon, Baetis sp., showed the opposite relationship. Presence of predatory invertebrates did not affect detritivore abundance or leaf decay rate in the bags. Our research suggests that recovery response variables of some stream systems may not have returned to prefire levels even a decade after the initial wildfire. In this study, the recovery of our streams appears to be connected to the return of the riparian zone, though fire-induced debris flows may slow or alter final recovery of the stream system
