    Factors Influencing Pika Foraging Behavior in the North Cascades National Park Service Complex, Washington

    The American pika (Ochotona princeps) is a small lagomorph restricted to talus slopes at higher elevations or latitudes throughout mountainous regions in western North America. Pikas respond to seasonal fluctuations in food availability by haying, i.e., storing, vegetation for use during winter, and are considered a climate change indicator species because of their sensitivity to heat and restricted habitat requirements. Prior to 2009, no data existed on pika populations or foraging behavior in the North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA) in Washington. To help address these data needs, we collected behavioral data on 95 foraging pikas throughout NOCA during summer 2009 and 2010 to better understand abiotic and biotic factors affecting foraging behavior and potential impacts of climate change on pikas. We calculated the proportion of time pikas spent grazing and haying, and developed competing hypotheses for each behavior expressed as logistic regression models consisting of climate, vegetation, elevation, date, and year covariates. We selected top models for both behaviors using information-theoretic techniques, and found that time spent grazing decreased while haying behavior increased through summer. Pikas spent more time haying as elevation increased while time spent grazing was negatively correlated with elevation, suggesting possible constraints in time available for foraging at higher elevations. Time spent grazing was also negatively correlated with temperature, a result likely in response to thermoregulation limitations of pikas. These results demonstrate how multiple factors may affect pika foraging behavior, thereby providing an opportunity to assist resource managers in future decisions regarding pika conservation

    Neurodiverse Human-Machine Interaction and Collaborative Problem-Solving in Social VR

    Social motor coordination is an important mechanism responsible for creating shared understanding but can be a challenge for Autistic individuals. Social virtual reality (VR) provides an opportunity to create a safe and inclusive environment for which interactions can be augmented to promote social interactivity. Due to the bi-directional nature of social interaction and adaptation, we created a framework to explore social motor coordination with a virtual artificial agent which can exhibit human-like behaviors. In this experiment, we assessed the interactive behaviors of participants completing a collaborative problem-solving task with the agent using multidimensional cross-recurrence quantification analysis (mdCRQA). Our results show that participants who discovered novel solutions to the task exhibited greater coupling to the artificial agent regardless of participant characteristics. Future work will explore how social VR environments can be augmented to promote social coordination

    The Role of Personality Traits in Young Adult Fruit and Vegetable Consumption

    This project investigated how individual differences in the big-five personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, conscientiousness, and agreeableness) predicted plant-food consumption in young adults. A total of 1073 participants from two samples of young adults aged 17–25 reported their daily servings of fruits, vegetables, and two unhealthy foods for comparison purposes using an Internet daily diary for 21 or 13 days (micro-longitudinal, correlational design). Participants also completed the Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) measure of personality, and demographic covariates including gender, age, ethnicity, and body mass index (BMI). Analyses used hierarchical regression to predict average daily fruit and vegetable consumption as separate dependent variables from the demographic covariates (step 1) and the five personality traits (step 2). Results showed that young adults higher in openness and extraversion, and to some extent conscientiousness, ate more fruits and vegetables than their less open, less extraverted, and less conscientious peers. Neuroticism and agreeableness were unrelated to fruit and vegetable consumption. These associations were unique to eating fruit and vegetables and mostly did not extend to unhealthy foods tested. Young adult women also ate more fruit and vegetables than young adult men. Results suggest that traits associated with greater intellect, curiosity, and social engagement (openness and extraversion), and to a lesser extent, discipline (conscientiousness) are associated with greater plant-food consumption in this population. Findings reinforce the importance of personality in establishing healthy dietary habits in young adulthood that could translate into better health outcomes later in life

    The mediating roles of workplace support and ethical work environment in associations between leadership and moral distress: a longitudinal study of Canadian health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Past research has shown that effective leadership may mitigate potential for the development of moral distress. However, no research to date has considered the mechanisms by which leadership might have an influence on moral distress. We sought to evaluate longitudinally whether Canadian HCWs’ perceptions of workplace support and ethical work environment would mediate associations between leadership and moral distress.MethodsA total of 239 French- and English-speaking Canadian HCWs employed during the COVID-19 pandemic were recruited to participate in a longitudinal online survey. Participants completed measures of organizational and supervisory leadership at baseline and follow-up assessments of workplace support, perceptions of an ethical work environment, and moral distress.ResultsAssociations between both organizational and supervisory leadership and moral distress were fully mediated by workplace supports and perceptions of an ethical work environment.DiscussionTo ensure HCW well-being and quality of care, it is important to ensure that HCWs are provided with adequate workplace supports, including manageable work hours, social support, and recognition for efforts, as well as an ethical workplace environment

    Optically pure, structural and fluorescent analogues of a dimeric Y4 receptor agonist derived by an olefin metathesis approach

    The dimeric peptide 1 (BVD-74D, as a diastereomeric mixture) is a potent and selective Neuropeptide Y Y4 receptor agonist. It represents a valuable candidate in developing traceable ligands for pharmacological studies of Y4 receptors, and as a lead compound for anti-obesity drugs. Its optically pure stereoisomers along with analogues and fluorescently labelled variants were prepared by exploiting alkene metathesis reactions. The (2R,7R)- diaminosuberoyl containing peptide, (R,R)-1 had markedly higher affinity and agonist efficacy than its (S,S)-counterpart. Furthermore the sulfo-Cy5 labelled (R,R)-14 retained high agonist potency as a novel fluorescent ligand for imaging Y4 receptors

    Identification of a Cyanine-dye labeled peptidic ligand for Y₁R and Y₄R, based upon the Neuropeptide Y C-terminal analogue, BVD-15

    Traceable truncated Neuropeptide Y (NPY) analogues with Y₁ receptor (Y₁R) affinity and selectivity are highly desirable tools in studying receptor location, regulation, and biological functions. A range of fluorescently labeled analogues of a reported Y₁R/Y₄R preferring ligand BVD-15 have been prepared and evaluated using high content imaging techniques. One peptide, [Lys²(sCy5), Arg⁴]BVD-15, was characterized as an Y₁R antagonist with a pKD of 7.2 measured by saturation analysis using fluorescent imaging. The peptide showed 8-fold lower affinity for Y₄R (pKD = 6.2) and was a partial agonist at this receptor. The suitability of [Lys²(sCy5), Arg⁴]BVD-15 for Y₁R and Y₄R competition binding experiments was also demonstrated in intact cells. The nature of the label was shown to be critical with replacement of sCy5 by the more hydrophobic Cy5.5 resulting in a switch from Y₁R antagonist to Y₁R partial agonist
