The effect of parallel static and microwave electric fields on excited hydrogen atoms
Motivated by recent experiments we analyse the classical dynamics of a
hydrogen atom in parallel static and microwave electric fields. Using an
appropriate representation and averaging approximations we show that resonant
ionisation is controlled by a separatrix, and provide necessary conditions for
a dynamical resonance to affect the ionisation probability.
The position of the dynamical resonance is computed using a high-order
perturbation series, and estimate its radius of convergence. We show that the
position of the dynamical resonance does not coincide precisely with the
ionisation maxima, and that the field switch-on time can dramatically affect
the ionisation signal which, for long switch times, reflects the shape of an
incipient homoclinic. Similarly, the resonance ionisation time can reflect the
time-scale of the separatrix motion, which is therefore longer than
conventional static field Stark ionisation. We explain why these effects should
be observed in the quantum dynamics.

An Economic analysis of the potential for precision farming in UK cereal production
The results from alternative spatial nitrogen application studies are analysed in economic terms and compared to the costs of precision farming hardware, software and other services for cereal crops in the UK. At current prices, the benefits of variable rate application of nitrogen exceed the returns from a uniform application by an average of £22 ha−1 The cost of the precision farming systems range from £5 to £18 ha−1 depending upon the system chosen for an area of 250 ha. The benefits outweigh the associated costs for cereal farms in excess of 80 ha for the lowest price system to 200–300 ha for the more sophisticated systems. The scale of benefits obtained depends upon the magnitude of the response to the treatment and the proportion of the field that will respond. To be cost effective, a farmed area of 250 ha of cereals, where 30% of the area will respond to variable treatment, requires an increase in crop yield in the responsive areas of between 0·25 and 1.00 t ha−1 (at £65 t−1) for the basic and most expensive precision farming systems, respectively
Mustard catch crop enhances denitrification in shallow groundwater beneath a spring barley field

This study investigates the impact of a mustard catch crop on in situ denitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from an aquifer overlain by arable land. Denitrification rates and N2O-N/(N2O-N + N2-N) mole fractions were measured in situ with a push–pull method in shallow groundwater under a spring barley system in experimental plots with and without a mustard cover crop. The results suggest that a mustard cover crop could substantially enhance reduction of groundwater nitrate NO3--N via denitrification without significantly increasing N2O emissions. Mean total denitrification (TDN) rates below mustard cover crop and no cover crop were 7.61 and 0.002 μg kg−1 d−1, respectively. Estimated N2O-N/(N2O-N + N2-N) ratios, being 0.001 and 1.0 below mustard cover crop and no cover crop respectively, indicate that denitrification below mustard cover crop reduces N2O to N2, unlike the plot with no cover crop. The observed enhanced denitrification under the mustard cover crop may result from the higher groundwater DOC under mustard cover crop (1.53 mg L−1) than no cover crop (0.90 mg L−1) being added by the root exudates and root masses of mustard. This study gives insights into the missing piece in agricultural nitrogen (N) balance and groundwater derived N2O emissions under arable land and thus helps minimise the uncertainty in agricultural N and N2O-N balances
Variation Across Mitochondrial Gene Trees Provides Evidence For Systematic Error: How Much Gene Tree Variation Is Biological?
The use of large genomic data sets in phylogenetics has highlighted extensive topological variation across genes. Much of this discordance is assumed to result from biological processes. However, variation among gene trees can also be a consequence of systematic error driven by poor model fit, and the relative importance of biological vs. methodological factors in explaining gene tree variation is a major unresolved question. Using mitochondrial genomes to control for biological causes of gene tree variation, we estimate the extent of gene tree discordance driven by systematic error and employ posterior prediction to highlight the role of model fit in producing this discordance. We find that the amount of discordance among mitochondrial gene trees is similar to the amount of discordance found in other studies that assume only biological causes of variation. This similarity suggests that the role of systematic error in generating gene tree variation is underappreciated and critical evaluation of fit between assumed models and the data used for inference is important for the resolution of unresolved phylogenetic questions
Glueball mass measurements from improved staggered fermion simulations
We present the first 2+1 flavour spectrum measurements of glueball states
using high statistics simulations with improved staggered fermions. We find a
spectrum consistent with quenched measurements of scalar, pseudoscalar
andtensor glueball states. The measurements were made using 5000 configurations
at a lattice spacing of 0.123 fm and pion mass of 280 MeV and 3000
configurations at 0.092 fm with a pion mass of 360 MeV. We see some evidence of
coupling to 2 pion states. We compare our results with the experimental

Faint Radio Sources and Star Formation History
Faint extragalactic radio sources provide important information about the
global history of star formation. Sensitive radio observations of the Hubble
Deep Field and other fields have found that sub-mJy radio sources are
predominantly associated with star formation activity rather than AGN. Radio
observations of star forming galaxies have the advantage of being independent
of extinction by dust. We use the FIR-radio correlation to compare the radio
and FIR backgrounds, and make several conclusions about the star forming
galaxies producing the FIR background. We then use the redshift distribution of
faint radio sources to determine the evolution of the radio luminosity
function, and thus estimate the star formation density as a function of

Detection of orbital and superhump periods in Nova V2574 Ophiuchi (2004)
We present the results of 37 nights of CCD unfiltered photometry of nova
V2574 Oph (2004) from 2004 and 2005. We find two periods of 0.14164 d (~3.40 h)
and 0.14773 d (~3.55 h) in the 2005 data. The 2004 data show variability on a
similar timescale, but no coherent periodicity was found. We suggest that the
longer periodicity is the orbital period of the underlying binary system and
that the shorter period represents a negative superhump. The 3.40 h period is
about 4% shorter than the orbital period and obeys the relation between
superhump period deficit and binary period. The detection of superhumps in the
light curve is evidence of the presence of a precessing accretion disk in this
binary system shortly after the nova outburst. From the maximum magnitude -
rate of decline relation, we estimate the decay rate t_2 = 17+/-4 d and a

Limits on Arcminute Scale Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy with the BIMA Array
We have used the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association (BIMA) millimeter
array outfitted with sensitive cm-wave receivers to search for Cosmic Microwave
Background (CMB) anisotropies on arcminute scales. The interferometer was
placed in a compact configuration which produces high brightness sensitivity,
while providing discrimination against point sources. Operating at a frequency
of 28.5 GHz, the FWHM primary beam of the instrument is 6.6 arcminutes. We have
made sensitive images of seven fields, five of which where chosen specifically
to have low IR dust contrast and be free of bright radio sources. Additional
observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) millimeter array
were used to assist in the location and removal of radio point sources.
Applying a Bayesian analysis to the raw visibility data, we place limits on CMB
anisotropy flat-band power Q_flat = 5.6 (+3.0 -5.6) uK and Q_flat < 14.1 uK at
68% and 95% confidence. The sensitivity of this experiment to flat band power
peaks at a multipole of l = 5470, which corresponds to an angular scale of
approximately 2 arcminutes. The most likely value of Q_flat is similar to the

During 2006-7, microbiological baseline data on the frequency and distribution of Salmonella contamination of pig carcasses in UK slaughterhouses were collected. Data were generated from four separate abattoirs which were determined as having practices representative of the UK slaughter industry. Studies were designed to provide estimates of the prevalence and levels of Salmonella contamination of the UK pork industry
