    An algal screening and mutation study was undertaken to obtain algae superior to Chlorella 71105 for use in a photosynthetic gas exchanger. Of the forty-four thermophilic algae studied, eighteen appeared to have growth rates as great as Chlorella 71105. Optimization of the physical and chemical environments of these strains is recommended as a way to further improve growth rates and concomitant oxygen production. The mutation study revealed that Chlorella 71105 is relatively resistant to germicidal ultraviolet radiation. No high temperature mutants of Chlorella 71105 were found

    The development and feasibility of a multimodal 'Talking Wall' to facilitate the voice of young people with autism and complex needs: a case study in a specialist residential school

    Limited research has examined methods to investigate the views, preferences and experiences of young people with autism and complex needs. The aim of this study, based at a specialist residential school in England, was to develop and pilot an innovative method for this purpose—a ‘Talking Wall’—that was trialled over a 6-month period. Thematic analysis of data from focus groups and semi structured interviews with staff, combined with structured observations of pupils, resulted in three key themes: supporting the expression and evaluation of emotions that underlie preferences; recognising the impact of transitions; and the important role of familiar adults in interpreting communication bids. These positive, initial findings suggest the Talking Wall approach merits further development and evaluation

    Completeness of case ascertainment and survival time error in English cancer registries: impact on 1-year survival estimates.

    BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that cancer registries in England are too dependent on processing of information from death certificates, and consequently that cancer survival statistics reported for England are systematically biased and too low. METHODS: We have linked routine cancer registration records for colorectal, lung, and breast cancer patients with information from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database for the period 2001-2007. Based on record linkage with the HES database, records missing in the cancer register were identified, and dates of diagnosis were revised. The effects of those revisions on the estimated survival time and proportion of patients surviving for 1 year or more were studied. Cases that were absent in the cancer register and present in the HES data with a relevant diagnosis code and a relevant surgery code were used to estimate (a) the completeness of the cancer register. Differences in survival times calculated from the two data sources were used to estimate (b) the possible extent of error in the recorded survival time in the cancer register. Finally, we combined (a) and (b) to estimate (c) the resulting differences in 1-year cumulative survival estimates. RESULTS: Completeness of case ascertainment in English cancer registries is high, around 98-99%. Using HES data added 1.9%, 0.4% and 2.0% to the number of colorectal, lung, and breast cancer registrations, respectively. Around 5-6% of rapidly fatal cancer registrations had survival time extended by more than a month, and almost 3% of rapidly fatal breast cancer records were extended by more than a year. The resulting impact on estimates of 1-year survival was small, amounting to 1.0, 0.8, and 0.4 percentage points for colorectal, lung, and breast cancer, respectively. INTERPRETATION: English cancer registration data cannot be dismissed as unfit for the purpose of cancer survival analysis. However, investigators should retain a critical attitude to data quality and sources of error in international cancer survival studies

    Step Position Distributions and the Pairwise Einstein Model for Steps on Crystal Surfaces

    The Pairwise Einstein Model (PEM) of steps not only justifies the use of the Generalized Wigner Distribution (GWD) for Terrace Width Distributions (TWDs), it also predicts a specific form for the Step Position Distribution (SPD), i.e., the probability density function for the fluctuations of a step about its average position. The predicted form of the SPD is well approximated by a Gaussian with a finite variance. However, the variance of the SPD measured from either real surfaces or Monte Carlo simulations depends on Δy\Delta y, the length of step over which it is calculated, with the measured variance diverging in the limit Δy→∞\Delta y \to \infty. As a result, a length scale LWL_{\rm W} can be defined as the value of Δy\Delta y at which the measured and theoretical SPDs agree. Monte Carlo simulations of the terrace-step-kink model indicate that LW≈14.2ξQL_{\rm W} \approx 14.2 \xi_Q, where ξQ\xi_Q is the correlation length in the direction parallel to the steps, independent of the strength of the step-step repulsion. LWL_{\rm W} can also be understood as the length over which a {\em single} terrace must be sampled for the TWD to bear a "reasonable" resemblence to the GWD.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Soil survey of Vasse Research Station, Western Australia

    This soil survey of the Vasse Research Station properties was carried out at the request of the Division of Plant Production of the Agriculture Western Australia. The survey followed a preliminary examination and mapping of soil series in the area by Mr T. Stoneman in 1982, after which it was concluded that more detailed survey work was required to assist farm management and research experimentation. The research station consists of two blocks, referred to here as the main block (Sussex Locations 1475, 1439, 2128, 2138, 2137, 2136, 2129, 2130, 2119, 2118, 2126 and 2125) and the hill block (Sussex Locations 3024, 3025 and part of 1864) approximately 12 km due south, and 15 km south-south-east respectively from Busselton. (Figure 1). The main (lowland) portion of the research station is approximately 610 ha in area and the hill block further south covers approximately 160 ha. The country is considered to be representative of much of the inland Swan Coastal Plain and its margin with the Whicher Range between Boyanup and Dunsborough. The work was conducted using a free survey technique where map unit boundaries and field observation sites were selected on the basis of air photo interpretation. Aerial photos enlarged to scales of 1:10,000 and 1:2000 respectively were used for the main and hill blocks. The final map presented in this report is at a uniform scale of 1:10,000.     Decolonizing VAWA 2021: A Step in the Right Direction for Protecting Native American Women

    The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) (1994) was a hallmark legislation aimed at combating violence against women. While violence against women is a national issue that affects women of all race/ethnicities, it affects Native American women the most, as Native women experience the highest rates of violence. Violence against Native women is rooted in colonization because it decreases the power of tribal government, diminishes tribal sovereignty, and devalues Native Americans, which in turn leaves Native women more vulnerable to victimization. As such, amendments to VAWA must take particular action on violence against Native women, including actions that support decolonization. The 2013 VAWA reauthorization acknowledged colonization and was the federal government’s first step in the decolonization process. It restored tribal jurisdiction over some VAWA crimes, but there are still gaps regarding protecting Native women. This policy analysis examines the proposed VAWA (2021) reauthorization HR 1620 and provides three specific recommendations in order to better protect Native women: 1) allow tribes to write their own rape laws, 2) expand tribal jurisdiction to all VAWA crimes and stranger and acquaintance violence, and 3) enhance tribes’ abilities to secure VAWA funds and resources. These recommendations are discussed in terms of existing literature and implications for Native people and Native communities

    A Precision Calculation of the Next-to-Leading Order Energy-Energy Correlation Function

    The O(alpha_s^2) contribution to the Energy-Energy Correlation function (EEC) of e+e- -> hadrons is calculated to high precision and the results are shown to be larger than previously reported. The consistency with the leading logarithm approximation and the accurate cancellation of infrared singularities exhibited by the new calculation suggest that it is reliable.
