Experimental Implications for a Linear Collider of the SUSY Dark Matter Scenario

This paper presents the detection issues for the lightest slepton \tilde{\tau}_1 at a future e^+e^- TeV collider given the dark matter constraints set on the SUSY mass spectrum by the WMAP results. It intends to illustrate the importance of an optimal detection of energetic electrons in the very forward region for an efficient rejection of the \gamma\gamma background. The TESLA parameters have been used in the case of head-on collisions and in the case of a 10, mrad half crossing angle.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, Work presented at the International Conference on Linear Colliders (LCWS04), 19-23 April 2004, Le Carre des Sciences, Paris, Franc

Polytopes of Minimum Positive Semidefinite Rank

The positive semidefinite (psd) rank of a polytope is the smallest kk for which the cone of k×kk \times k real symmetric psd matrices admits an affine slice that projects onto the polytope. In this paper we show that the psd rank of a polytope is at least the dimension of the polytope plus one, and we characterize those polytopes whose psd rank equals this lower bound. We give several classes of polytopes that achieve the minimum possible psd rank including a complete characterization in dimensions two and three

URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

    Get PDF
As cities in the developing world grow, their poor residents are being deprived of services, especially water, sewer, and solid waste collection, that can only be purchased expensively in private markets. But the inadequate provision of urban environmental services is not inevitable. A lack of will in this respect is partly due to an ambivalent attitude toward city growth and a widespread feeling that rural-urban migration is excessive. Provision of optimal urban environmental services is also expensive. While the budget problems are exacerbated by foolish pricing policies and cost inefficiencies, it may not be feasible for developing countries to provide all urban residents with optimal service levels. There are many ways to provide basic services to poor residents.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Rotating pressure measurement system using an on board calibration standard

    Get PDF
A computer-controlled multichannel pressure measurement system was developed to acquire detailed flow field measurements on board the Large Low Speed Centrifugal Compressor Research Facility at the NASA Lewis Research Center. A pneumatic slip ring seal assembly is used to transfer calibration pressures to a reference standard transducer on board the compressor rotor in order to measure very low differential pressures with the high accuracy required. A unique data acquisition system was designed and built to convert the analog signal from the reference transducer to the variable frequency required by the multichannel pressure measurement system and also to provide an output for temperature control of the reference transducer. The system also monitors changes in test cell barometric pressure and rotating seal leakage and provides an on screen warning to the operator if limits are exceeded. The methods used for the selection and testing of the the reference transducer are discussed, and the data acquisition system hardware and software design are described. The calculated and experimental data for the system measurement accuracy are also presented

Compact Nuclei in Galaxies at Moderate Redshift: I. Imaging and Spectroscopy

This study explores the space density and properties of active galaxies to z=0.8. We have investigated the frequency and nature of unresolved nuclei in galaxies at moderate redshift as indicators of nuclear activity such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or starbursts. Candidates are selected by fitting imaged galaxies with multi-component models using maximum likelihood estimate techniques to determine the best model fit. We select those galaxies requiring an unresolved, point source component in the galaxy nucleus, in addition to a disk and/or bulge component, to adequately model the galaxy light. We have searched 70 WFPC2 images primarily from the Medium Deep Survey for galaxies containing compact nuclei. In our survey of 1033 galaxies, the fraction containing an unresolved nuclear component greater than 3% of the total galaxy light is 16+/-3% corrected for incompleteness and 9+/-1% for nuclei greater than 5% of the galaxy light. Spectroscopic redshifts have been obtained for 35 of our AGN/starburst candidates and photometric redshifts are estimated to an accuracy of sigma_z=0.1 for the remaining sample. In this paper, the first of two in this series, we present the selected HST imaged galaxies having unresolved nuclei and discuss the selection procedure. We also present the ground-based spectroscopy for these galaxies as well as the photometric redshifts estimated for those galaxies without spectra.Comment: 56 pages, 22 figures, to appear in ApJ Supplement Series, April 199
