    Pesticide Use and Water Quality

    Understanding use rates and use patterns of pesticides is valuable to the agricultural industry for manufacturers, registrants, regulatory agencies, environmental interests and pesticide end-users. There are several sources of data, including surveys of pesticide users, monitoring of pesticide detections in the environment, and indirect measures including tracking pesticide sales. The Iowa Groundwater Protection Act of 1987 directed the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) to collect pesticide sales data from pesticide dealers. The dollar sales data, which is confidential business information, is being used to calculate approximate pounds of active ingredients for pesticides which might impact surface or ground water quality. The calculated pounds data for selected pesticides is then provided to the water quality researchers at the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and at Iowa State University Extension. The dataset presented here using two methods, one by ISU Extension and the other by the Geologic Survey Bureau, was gathered by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Pesticide Bureau and was compiled with assistance from the Iowa Geologic Survey Bureau of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. These use rate patterns are helpful in crafting management plans to reduce or avoid environmental contamination from specific pesticides

    Can pulsational instabilities impact a massive star's rotational evolution?

    We investigate whether angular momentum transport due to unstable pulsation modes can play a significant role in the rotational evolution of massive stars. We find that these modes can redistribute appreciable angular momentum, and moreover trigger shear-instability mixing in the molecular weight gradient zone adjacent to stellar cores, with significant evolutionary impact.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Proc.     There is a need for improved drought monitoring and assessment methods in the United States. Drought is the most costly natural disaster [Federal Emergency Management Agancy (FEMA 1995; Wilhite 2000)], but it is often neglected by developers of assessment and forecast products. Drought is more nebulous than other disasters and does not lend itself to traditional assessments or forecast methods. Its relatively slow onset and the complexity of its impacts are reasons for the new assessment methodology. Improvements in drought monitoring and forecasting techniques will allow for better preparation, lead to better management practices, and reduce the vulnerability of society to drought and its subsequent impacts. The Drought Monitor (additional information available online at http://drought.unl/edu/dm) was created with the goal of tracking and displaying the magnitude and spatial extent of drought and its impacts across the United States. The Drought Monitor is produced weekly and classifies drought severity into four major categories, with a fifth category threshold assigned to locations on a map are determined from a number of indicators, or tools, blended with subjective interpretation

    Effect of Methionine Supplementation During Late Gestation in Beef Females

    Some amino acids are known to be essential to cattle and effect protein availability to the animal, especially during gestation when nutrient requirements are higher. Methionine is found to be one of the most limiting in low quality forage diets. Two 3-yr studies were performed to evaluate the impact of methionine supplementation during late gestation on intake, body weight, average daily gain, and subsequent calf performance in primiparous and multiparous females. In exp 1, 120 artificially inseminated pregnancy heifers were placed in a Calan gate feeding system (n=40/yr) and assigned 1 of 3 treatments during late gestation and fed ad libitum grass hay with either: no supllement, 2 lbs. distillers based supplement with 1 oz of rumen protected methionine. In exp 2, multiparous cows on upland winter range were fed 1 of 5 treatments; no supplement, ad libitum meadow hay, 1 lb. of a distiller\u27s based cube, 2 lb. of a distiller\u27s based cube, or 2 lb. of a distiller\u27s based cube plus 1 oz of a rumen protected methionine. Body weight, body condition score, reproductive responses, and subequent calf performance were recorded in both studies. No differences were observed in calving performance or progeny carcass characteristics in either experiment in response to methionine supplementation, so it may not be a necessary supplementation strategy

    Trajectories in chronic disease accrual and mortality across the lifespan in Wales, UK (2005–2019), by area deprivation profile: linked electronic health records cohort study on 965,905 individuals

    Background: Understanding and quantifying the differences in disease development in different socioeconomic groups of people across the lifespan is important for planning healthcare and preventive services. The study aimed to measure chronic disease accrual, and examine the differences in time to individual morbidities, multimorbidity, and mortality between socioeconomic groups in Wales, UK.Methods: Population-wide electronic linked cohort study, following Welsh residents for up to 20 years (2000-2019). Chronic disease diagnoses were obtained from general practice and hospitalisation records using the CALIBER disease phenotype register. Multi-state models were used to examine trajectories of accrual of 132 diseases and mortality, adjusted for sex, age and area-level deprivation. Restricted mean survival time was calculated to measure time spent free of chronic disease(s) or mortality between socioeconomic groups.Findings: In total, 965,905 individuals aged 5-104 were included, from a possible 2.9 m individuals following a 5-year clearance period, with an average follow-up of 13.2 years (12.7 million person-years). Some 673,189 (69.7%) individuals developed at least one chronic disease or died within the study period. From ages 10 years upwards, the individuals living in the most deprived areas consistently experienced reduced time between health states, demonstrating accelerated transitions to first and subsequent morbidities and death compared to their demographic equivalent living in the least deprived areas. The largest difference were observed in 10 and 20 year old males developing multimorbidity (-0.45 years (99% CI: -0.45, -0.44)) and in 70 year old males dying after developing multimorbidity (-1.98 years (99% CI: -2.01, -1.95)).Interpretation: This study adds to the existing literature on health inequalities by demonstrating that individuals living in more deprived areas consistently experience accelerated time to diagnosis of chronic disease and death across all ages, accounting for competing risks
