Columbia, Maryland, April 19-21, 1982.Simplifying assumptions — everyone uses them but no one's programming tool explicitly supports them. In programming, as in other kinds of engineering design, simplifying assumptions are an important method for dealing with complexity. Given a complex programming problem, expert programmers typically choose simplifying assumptions which, though false, allow them to arrive rapidly at a program which addresses the important features of the problem without being distracted by all of its details. The simplifying assumptions are then incrementally retracted with corresponding modifications to the initial program. This methodology is particularly applicable to rapid prototyping because the main questions of interest can often be answered using only the initial program. Simplifying assumptions can easily be misused. In order to use them effectively two key issues must be addressed. First, simplifying assumptions should be chosen which simplify the design problems significantly without changing the essential character of the program which needs to be implemented. Second, the designer must keep track of all the assumptions he is making so that he can later retract them in an orderly manner. By explicitly dealing with these issues, a programming assistant system could directly support the use of simplifying assumptions as a disciplined part of the software development process.MIT Artificial Intelligence Laborator

The structures of all eleven of its subunits are explored by building homology models based on the published structures of the homologous bovine subunits and similarities and differences are highlighted, particularly of the core functional subunit I.     Deep near-IR observations of the Globular Cluster M4: Hunting for Brown Dwarfs

    We present an analysis of deep HST/WFC3 near-IR (NIR) imaging data of the globular cluster M4. The best-photometry NIR colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) clearly shows the main sequence extending towards the expected end of the Hydrogen-burning limit and going beyond this point towards fainter sources. The white dwarf sequence can be identified. As such, this is the deepest NIR CMD of a globular cluster to date. Archival HST optical data were used for proper-motion cleaning of the CMD and for distinguishing the white dwarfs (WDs) from brown dwarf (BD) candidates. Detection limits in the NIR are around F110W approx 26.5 mag and F160W approx27 mag, and in the optical around F775W approx 28 mag. Comparing our observed CMDs with theoretical models, we conclude that we have reached beyond the H-burning limit in our NIR CMD and are probably just above or around this limit in our optical-NIR CMDs. Thus, any faint NIR sources that have no optical counterpart are potential BD candidates, since the optical data are not deep enough to detect them. We visually inspected the positions of NIR sources which are fainter than the H-burning limit in F110W and for which the optical photometry did not return a counterpart. We found in total five sources for which we did not get an optical measurement. For four of these five sources, a faint optical counterpart could be visually identified, and an upper optical magnitude was estimated. Based on these upper optical magnitude limits, we conclude that one source is likely a WD, one source could either be a WD or BD candidate, and the remaining two sources agree with being BD candidates. For only one source no optical counterpart could be detected, which makes this source a good BD candidate.     HST-NICMOS Observations of M31's Metal Rich Globular Clusters and Their Surrounding Fields: I. Techniques

    We have obtained HST-NICMOS observations of five of M31's most metal rich globular clusters. These data allow photometry of individual stars in the clusters and their surrounding fields. However, to achieve our goals -- obtain accurate luminosity functions to compare with their Galactic counterparts, determine metallicities from the slope of the giant branch, identify long period variables, and estimate ages from the AGB tip luminosity, we must be able to disentangle the true properties of the population from the observational effects associated with measurements made in very crowded fields. In this paper we present a careful analysis of photometry in crowded regions, and show how image blending affects the results and interpretation of such data. Although this analysis is specifically for our NICMOS observations in M31, the techniques we develop can be applied to any imaging data taken in crowded fields; we show how the effects of image blending will even limit NGST. We use three different techniques to analyze the effects of crowding on our data, including the insertion of artificial stars (traditional completeness tests) and the creation of completely artificial clusters. They are used to derive threshold- and critical-blending radii for each cluster, which determine how close to the cluster center reliable photometry can be achieved. The simulations also allow us to quantify and correct for the effects of blending on the slope and width of the RGB at different surface brightness levels.Comment: AAS LaTeX v5.0, 18 pages.     Solution of Orthopositronium lifetime Puzzle

    The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium formed in SiO2{\rm SiO_2} powder is measured using the direct 2γ2\gamma correction method such that the time dependence of the pick-off annihilation rate is precisely determined. The decay rate of orthopositronium is found to be 7.0396±0.0012(stat.)±0.0011(sys.)μs17.0396\pm0.0012 (stat.)\pm0.0011 (sys.)\mu s^{-1}, which is consistent with our previous measurements with about twice the accuracy. Results agree well with the O(α2)O(\alpha^2) QED prediction, and also with a result reported very recently using nanoporous film

    Coherence of neutrino flavor mixing in quantum field theory

    In the simplistic quantum mechanical picture of flavor mixing, conditions on the maximum size and minimum coherence time of the source and detector regions for the observation of interference---as well as the very viability of the approach---can only be argued in an ad hoc way from principles external to the formalism itself. To examine these conditions in a more fundamental way, the quantum field theoretical SS-matrix approach is employed in this paper, without the unrealistic assumption of microscopic stationarity. The fully normalized, time-dependent neutrino flavor mixing event rates presented here automatically reveal the coherence conditions in a natural, self-contained, and physically unambiguous way, while quantitatively describing the transition to their failure.Comment: 12 pages, submitted to Phys.     RR Lyrae Stars in the Andromeda Halo from Deep Imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys

    We present a complete census of RR Lyrae stars in a halo field of the Andromeda galaxy. These deep observations, taken as part of a program to measure the star formation history in the halo, spanned a period of 41 days with sampling on a variety of time scales, enabling the identification of short and long period variables. Although the long period variables cannot be fully characterized within the time span of this program, the enormous advance in sensitivity provided by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope allows accurate characterization of the RR Lyrae population in this field. We find 29 RRab stars with a mean period of 0.594 days, 25 RRc stars with a mean period of 0.316 days, and 1 RRd star with a fundamental period of 0.473 days and a first overtone period of 0.353 days. These 55 RR Lyrae stars imply a specific frequency S_RR=5.6, which is large given the high mean metallicity of the halo, but not surprising given that these stars arise from the old, metal-poor tail of the distribution. This old population in the Andromeda halo cannot be clearly placed into one of the Oosterhoff types: the ratio of RRc/RRabc stars is within the range seen in Oosterhoff II globular clusters, the mean RRab period is in the gap between Oosterhoff types, and the mean RRc period is in the range seen in Oosterhoff I globular clusters. The periods of these RR Lyraes suggest a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.6, while their brightness implies a distance modulus to Andromeda of 24.5+/-0.1, in good agreement with the Cepheid distance.Comment: 15 pages, latex.
