    Assessment of fish populations and habitat on Oculina Bank, a deep-sea coral marine protected area off eastern Florida

    A portion of the Oculina Bank located off eastern Florida is a marine protected area (MPA) preserved for its dense populations of the ivory tree coral (Oculina varicosa), which provides important habitat for fish. Surveys of fish assemblages and benthic habitat were conducted inside and outside the MPA in 2003 and 2005 by using remotely operated vehicle video transects and digital still imagery. Fish species composition, biodiversity, and grouper densities were used to determine whether O. varicosa forms an essential habitat compared to other structure-forming habitats and to examine the effectiveness of the MPA. Multivariate analyses indicated no differences in fish assemblages or biodiversity among hardbottom habitat types and grouper densities were highest among the most complex habitats; however the higher densities were not exclusive to coral habitat. Therefore, we conclude that O. varicosa was functionally equivalent to other hardbottom habitats. Even though fish assemblages were not different among management areas, biodiversity and grouper densities were higher inside the MPA compared to outside. The percentage of intact coral was also higher inside the MPA. These results provide initial evidence demonstrating effectiveness of the MPA for restoring reef fish and their habitat.     This communication introduces the project MQD 2010MQD00008 which consists in a pilot trial of editing an accessible video in an academic context. This project involves the creation of a video and a slide presentation to increase the awareness of accessibility in multimedia, the creation of subtitles and audiodescriptions, the publication of these resources in mainstream web publishing platforms and the customization of some existing accessible video players. From those experiences the project will publish a set of guidelines for creating accessible video. As a result we will obtain the awareness materials, the source code of the adapted players and the guidelines for creating accessible video

    PERSISTENCE OF IMMUNITY TO POLIOMYELITIS AMONG A SOUTHERN POPULATION THAT RECEIVED FOUR DOSES OF OPV 5 TO OVER 15 YEARS BEFORE

    The immune status against polioviruses was investigated in a population of 545 students aged 11-20 years residing in the Neapolitan area, who had completed the vaccination cycle with four doses of OPV 5 to over 15 years before. Assuming as unprotected those individuals without detectable neutralizing antibodies at the dilution 1:2, nobody resulted without protection against all types of poliovirus; 0.7% lacked antibodies only against type 1, 0.6% only against type 3 and none against type 2. A very slight decreasing trend was observed for GMT values in function of the distance from the last dose of OPV for polio 1 and 2, but not for polio 3. As expected, GMT values for polio 2 resulted higher than those for polio 1 and both were higher than those for polio 3, when calculated by age groups as well as by distance groups. The last four Italian cases of autochthonous paralytic poliomyelitis, occurred in the period 1981/83, regarded unvaccinated children aged 6 months-2 years, residing in the same geographical area to which the study population belong. In the same area a delay of immunization practices was also ascertained in the recent past. Results of this study confirm that a priority for public health services is to devote their human and economic resources to reduce the vaccination delay more than administrate a further fifth dose of OPV at the age of twelve

    Can we predict the evolution of depressive symptoms, adjustment, and perceived social support of pregnant women from their personality characteristics? A technology-supported longitudinal study

    Background: Research exploring the relationship between personality and important pregnancy outcomes (i.e., depressive symptoms, adjustment, and perceived social support) tends to be cross-sectional, arguably due to the difficulties of conducting longitudinal and mental health research in this population. The objective of this study is to use a web-based solution to longitudinally explore how personality traits are associated, not only with the co-occurrence of these outcomes but also with their evolution during pregnancy. Stability and change of these outcomes will also be investigated. Methods: The sample included 85 pregnant women attending several medical centers in Spain. The web-based assessment included sociodemographic and obstetric variables (ad hoc) and personality (at the second trimester only), and outcomes at both the second and the third trimester (i.e., depressive symptoms, adjustment, and perceived social support). Results: The results showed that adjustment worsened from the second to the third trimester of pregnancy. Neuroticism (N), low extraversion (E), and psychoticism (P) were cross-sectionally and longitudinally associated with outcomes. In addition, N and, to a lesser extent P, uniquely contributed to the evolution of these outcomes in the multivariate analyses, including autoregressions. Conclusion: Personality and especially N and P should be evaluated early during pregnancy mental health screening. The use of a web page appears to be a useful tool for that purpose. Technologies might also help disseminate mental health prevention programs for these women, which would be especially recommended for those with a personality profile characterized by high N and P and, to a lesser extent, low E

    Revisión del género Cantabrogeus Salgado, 2000, con la descripción de tres nuevas especies hipogeas endémicas de la Cordillera Cantábrica (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae, Leptodirini)

    Se revisan las dos especies previamente descritas del género Cantabrogeus (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae, Leptodirini), y se describen tres especies nuevas: Cantabrogeus antimachus sp. n., C. cultellus sp. n. y C. fresnedai sp. n. Una de ellas (C. antimachus sp. n.) es triploide (3n = 33) y la primera especie partenogenética conocida de Leiodidae. Se analizan y se discuten las relaciones existentes entre los diferentes taxones a partir de los caracteres morfológicos externos y las estructuras de los aparatos genitales masculino y femenino, así como las áreas cársticas que colonizan las diferentes especies en la zona cantábrica (NO ibérico). El análisis de datos moleculares (fragmentos de siete genes mitocondriales y nucleares) confirma la monofilia de Cantabrogeus y su proximidad filogenética con el género Fresnedaella, así como su inclusión dentro de la serie Quaestus, que es parafilética. La especie partenogenética (C. antimachus sp. n.) ocupa una posición derivada dentro del género Cantabrogeus, que, de acuerdo con estimas de la tasa de variación molecular basadas en estudios previos, probablemente se diversificó durante el Plioceno–Pleistoceno en las zonas cársticas cántabras, que son de una alta complejidad tectónica.The two previously known species of the genus Cantabrogeus (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae, Leptodirini) are redescribed, and three new species are described: Cantabrogeus antimachus n. sp., C. cultellus n. sp. and C. fresnedai n. sp. One of these (C. antimachus n. sp.) is tripliod (3n = 33) and the first known parthenogenetic species of Leiodidae. The relationships between the different taxa are discussed based on external morphological characters and the structure of male and female genitalia, as well as the distribution of the species in the different areas in the Cantabrian mountains (NW Iberia). Analyses of molecular data (fragments of seven mitochondrial and nuclear genes) confirms the monophyly of Cantabrogeus and its sister–group relationship with Fresnedaella, as well as its inclusion within the paraphyletic series Quaestus.     Predicting postpartum depressive symptoms from pregnancy biopsychosocial factors: A longitudinal investigation using structural equation modeling

    The prediction of postpartum depression (PPD) should be conceptualized from a biopsychosocial perspective. This study aims at exploring the longitudinal contribution of a set of biopsychosocial factors for PPD in perinatal women. A longitudinal study was conducted, assessment was made with a website and included biopsychosocial factors that were measured during pregnancy (n = 266, weeks 16–36), including age, affective ambivalence, personality characteristics, social support and depression. Depression was measured again at postpartum (n = 101, weeks 2–4). The analyses included bivariate associations and structural equation modeling (SEM). Age, affective ambivalence, neuroticism, positive, and negative affect at pregnancy were associated with concurrent depression during pregnancy (all p < 0.01). Age, affective ambivalence, positive affect, and depression at pregnancy correlated with PPD (all p < 0.05). Affective ambivalence (ß = 1.97; p = 0.003) and positive (ß = -0.29; p < 0.001) and negative affect (ß = 0.22; p = 0.024) at pregnancy remained significant predictors of concurrent depression in the SEM, whereas only age (ß = 0.27; p = 0.010) and depression (ß = 0.37; p = 0.002) at pregnancy predicted PPD. Biopsychosocial factors are clearly associated with concurrent depression at pregnancy, but the stability of depression across time limits the prospective contribution of biopsychosocial factors. Depression should be screened early during pregnancy, as this is likely to persist after birth. The use of technology, as in the present investigation, might be a cost-effective option for this purpose
