Crossed spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains as a quantum impurity problem
Using equivalencies between different models we reduce the model of two
spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains crossed at one point to the model of free fermions.
The spin-spin correlation function is calculated by summing the perturbation
series in the interchain coupling. The result reveals a power law decay with a

Graphene zigzag ribbons, square lattice models and quantum spin chains
We present an extended study of finite-width zigzag graphene ribbons (ZGRs)
based on a tight-binding model with hard-wall boundary conditions. We provide
an exact analytic solution that clarifies the origin of the predicted width
dependence on the conductance through junctions of ribbons with different
widths. An analysis of the obtained solutions suggests a new description of
ZGRs in terms of coupled chains. We pursue these ideas further by introducing a
mapping between the ZGR model and the Hamiltonian for N-coupled quantum chains
as described in terms of 2N Majorana fermions. The proposed mapping preserves
the dependence of ribbon properties on its width thus rendering metallic
ribbons for N odd and zero-gap semiconductor ribbons for N even. Furthermore,
it reveals a close connection between the low-energy properties of the ZGR
model and a continuous family of square lattice model Hamiltonians with similar
width-dependent properties that includes the flux and the trivial square
lattice models. As a further extension, we show that this new description makes
it possible to identify various aspects of the physics of graphene ribbons with
those predicted by models of quantum spin chains (QSCs)
Pulsar Prospects for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
In the last few years, the Fermi-LAT telescope has discovered over a 100
pulsars at energies above 100 MeV, increasing the number of known gamma-ray
pulsars by an order of magnitude. In parallel, imaging Cherenkov telescopes,
such as MAGIC and VERITAS, have detected for the first time VHE pulsed
gamma-rays from the Crab pulsar. Such detections have revealed that the Crab
VHE spectrum follows a power-law up to at least 400 GeV, challenging most
theoretical models, and opening wide possibilities of detecting more pulsars
from the ground with the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). In this
contribution, we study the capabilities of CTA for detecting Fermi pulsars. For
this, we extrapolate their spectra with "Crab-like" power-law tails in the VHE

Detecting improvements in forecast correlation skill: Statistical testing and power analysis

Available from the American Meteorological Society via the DOI in this recordThe skill of weather and climate forecast systems is often assessed by calculating the correlation coefficient between past forecasts and their verifying observations. Improvements in forecast skill can thus be quantified by correlation differences. The uncertainty in the correlation difference needs to be assessed to judge whether the observed difference constitutes a genuine improvement, or is compatible with random sampling variations. A widely used statistical test for correlation difference is known to be unsuitable, because it assumes that the competing forecasting systems are independent. In this paper, appropriate statistical methods are reviewed to assess correlation differences when the competing forecasting systems are strongly correlated with one another. The methods are used to compare correlation skill between seasonal temperature forecasts that differ in initialization scheme and model resolution. A simple power analysis framework is proposed to estimate the probability of correctly detecting skill improvements, and to determine the minimum number of samples required to reliably detect improvements. The proposed statistical test has a higher power of detecting improvements than the traditional test. The main examples suggest that sample sizes of climate hindcasts should be increased to about 40 years to ensure sufficiently high power. JCLAL: A Java framework for active learning
Active Learning has become an important area of research owing to the increasing number of real-world problems which contain labelled and unlabelled examples at the same time. JCLAL is a Java Class Library for Active Learning which has an architecture that follows strong principles of object-oriented design. It is easy to use, and it allows the developers to adapt, modify and extend the framework according to their needs. The library offers a variety of active learning methods that have been proposed in the literature. The software is available under the GPL license
