    The influence of gender and social attention to gender equality on applicant acceptance into venture development programs: competing perspectives

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to add to the small but growing body of research examining the influence of founder gender on new venture access to venture development programs. Design/methodology/approach – Hypotheses were tested utilizing a sample of 482 nascent technology ventures which applied for admittance into a venture development organization headquartered in the southern region of the United States from March 2004 through February 2016. Findings – Findings suggest that female-founded applicant ventures experience a higher likelihood of acceptance into venture development programs than male-founded applicant ventures. Results further suggest that social attention to gender equality reduces this effect for female-founded applicant ventures. Findings extend the understanding of the gendered nature of high-technology venturing and venture development organizations. Research limitations/implications – The findings of this study may not generalize to new ventures operating in other contexts (e.g., non-U.S., low-tech, and other venture development programs). Additionally, this study's design and data limitations do not allow for the establishment of causality or address founder motivations to apply for acceptance into venture development programs. Originality/value – This study adds to empirical findings regarding the influence of founder gender on new venture acceptance into venture development programs by developing and testing competing hypotheses. This study also extends extant research by examining the moderating effect of social attention to gender equality on the hypothesized relationships between founder gender and acceptance into venture development programs

    Microdeletion of target sites for insulator protein CTCF in a chromosome 11p15 imprinting center in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome and Wilms' tumor

    We have analyzed several cases of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) with Wilms' tumor in a familial setting, which give insight into the complex controls of imprinting and gene expression in the chromosome 11p15 region. We describe a 2.2-kbp microdeletion in the H19/insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2)-imprinting center eliminating three target sites of the chromatin insulator protein CTCF that we believe here is necessary, but not sufficient, to cause BWS and Wilms' tumor. Maternal inheritance of the deletion is associated with IGF2 loss of imprinting and up-regulation of IGF2 mRNA. However, in at least one affected family member a second genetic lesion (a duplication of maternal 11p15) was identified and accompanied by a further increase in IGF2 rnRNA levels 35-fold higher than control values. Our results suggest that the combined effects of the H19//GF2-imprinting center microdeletion and 11p15 chromosome duplication were necessary for manifestation of BWS

    Formation of moir\ue9 interlayer excitons in space and time

    Moir\ue9 superlattices in atomically thin van der Waals heterostructures hold great promise for extended control of electronic and valleytronic lifetimes1-7, the confinement of excitons in artificial moir\ue9 lattices8-13 and the formation of exotic quantum phases14-18. Such moir\ue9-induced emergent phenomena are particularly strong for interlayer excitons, where the hole and the electron are localized in different layers of the heterostructure19,20. To exploit the full potential of correlated moir\ue9 and exciton physics, a thorough understanding of the ultrafast interlayer exciton formation process and the real-space wavefunction confinement is indispensable. Here we show that femtosecond photoemission momentum microscopy provides quantitative access to these key properties of the moir\ue9 interlayer excitons. First, we elucidate that interlayer excitons are dominantly formed through femtosecond exciton-phonon scattering and subsequent charge transfer\ua0at the interlayer-hybridized ÎŁ valleys. Second, we show that interlayer excitons exhibit a momentum fingerprint that is a direct hallmark of the superlattice moir\ue9 modification. Third, we reconstruct the wavefunction distribution of the electronic part of the exciton and compare the size with the real-space moir\ue9 superlattice. Our work provides direct access to interlayer exciton formation dynamics in space and time and reveals opportunities to study correlated moir\ue9 and exciton physics for the future realization of exotic quantum phases of matter

    Supporting first-grade writers who fail to learn: multiple single-case evaluation of a response to intervention approach

    We report a multiple-baseline single-case study, based in the response to intervention framework, evaluating transcription-only and transcription-and-planning interventions for young, struggling writers. In a baseline phase, 8 classes of Spanish children at the start of their first year of primary (elementary) education completed short, probe writing tasks twice-weekly over the first 120 days of their school career. During this period, all students received researcher-developed classroom instruction in spelling, handwriting, and text-planning. Students then completed a battery of tests including measures of spelling, handwriting and composition quality. On the basis of writing probe tasks and test scores we identified 12 struggling writers for whose written composition performance was below the 15th percentile, relative to the full sample, whose spelling performance was below 25th percentile, and whose handwriting was poor. For the next 72 days, these students received twice-weekly, parent-delivered training in transcription skills (handwriting and spelling) or transcription skills plus text planning. Researcher-developed classroom instruction and regular probe tasks continued during this phase. All students, in both intervention conditions, showed improvement in handwriting quality relative to Phase 1. 10 students also showed improvement in composition quality, with 8 performing, post intervention, within normal range relative to peers. Our findings demonstrate the value of a response-to-intervention approach to identification and remediation for struggling writes in their first school year

    Crystallization of Nd<sub>2</sub>Fe<sub>17</sub>B<sub>x</sub> from its stoichiometric melt composition

    Containerless solidification of gas-atomized Nd10Fe85B5 melt droplets was carried out using the drop tube technique. The phase constituents and microstructure of the solidified samples were investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction analysis, thermomagnetic analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Besides g-Fe and Nd2Fe14B, non-equilibrium phases such as Nd2Fe17Bx, e-Nd, and Nd1.1Fe4B4 were identified. The microstructure of the samples was categorized into three types, including a quasi-single phase one that consists mainly of Nd2Fe17Bx dendrites. The lattice parameters and Curie temperature of Nd2Fe17Bx were determined, and compared with those of the same type phase crystallized in Nd-rich Nd-Fe-B melt compositions. The results were discussed with respect to the stoichiometry, formation as well as potential applications of Nd2Fe17Bx
