Environmental control of Tinto and Odiel river basins by PIXE
A study of the elemental concentrations of sediments of the rivers Tinto and Odiel, in Huelva, Spain, has been performed using
PIXE. Thirteen samples have been collected, seven in the Tinto and six in the Odiel. Concentrations of 19 elements have been
determined in each of them. The analysis of the data illustrates the environmental impact of the mining and fertilizer plants in the
area
Non-destructive in situ examination of a 16th century Spanish panel painting "San Telmo”
The panel painting San Telmo by an anonymous 16th century Spanish artist is part of the
permanent exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum of Seville, one of the most important Spanish
galleries. As part of a larger study on 15th and 16th century Spanish painting, the principal
interest of this work was to obtain more information the materials applied in its creation. The
research work was carried out in situ in the exhibition room; hence, only non-destructive
analytical methods were applied. The painting was fi rst studied with UV light to observe
later interventions. After this, a possible preparatory drawing was searched for with IR refl
ectography (IRR). Finally, a portable X-Ray fl uorescence (XRF) equipment was applied
for a material analysis. The UV image of the painting clearly revealed later interventions,
which helped to select the points for the XRF analysis, to distinguish between original and
modern pigments. The XRF analysis showed that the painter’s palette was common for the
16th century, and similar to those found in other panels from the same period in the Museum
collection, namely: lead white (identifi ed by Pb), yellow and red ochres (Fe), vermilion (Hg),
a copper based green pigment (Cu), azurite (Cu), and an organic black, probably bone black
(Ca). Several retouches made on the bases of Zn and Ti whites were confi rmed. The presence
of Ca and Pb in every analysed point shows that there must be a calcium based preparation,
probably gypsum, with a lead based priming. Most interestingly, the IR images revealed not
only a very precise and decisive artist’s brushstroke, observed in the modelling of the subject’s
head or clothing, but also a change in the shape of the boat that the Saint holds in his
left hand (pentimenti)
A panel painting by the master of female half-lengths analysed by portable XRF
A panel painting representing The Pietà by an anonymous author known as The master of Female Half-Lenghts was analysed by a non-destructive XRF technique. The Pietà forms an important part of the permanent exposition of the Fine Arts Museum of Seville. An unusual brownish tonality of the painting led to a research on pigments and their possible changes during the centuries. Portable XRF equipment was used directly “in situ” in the exhibition room. The results showed the use of pigments, commonly applied in that century, lead white, lead-tin yellow, yellow and red ochre, cinnabar or vermilion, some copper based green pigment, azurite and smalt, as well as some organic red and black pigment. The chemical alteration of smalt, whose blue colour is not observed by the naked eye anymore, led to a brownish aspect of the painting. Also several retouches by modern pigments were found, which were first examed by UV light. The comparison to other Flemish paintings held in the permanent Museum’s collection was also carried out.Junta de Andalucía 2005/HUM-49
Materials applied in Bernardo Martorell’s painting analysed by portable XRF
Bernardo Martorell was a leading artist of the 15th century in Catalonia . His panel painting the Ascension of the Virgin is one of the oldest in the collection of Fine Arts Museum of Seville. This is why it was chosen for the analysis among several other panels which form part of a bigger project between the Museum and the National Centre of Accelerators. The research work is dedicated to the characterization of materials applied in the Spanish paintings in the 15th and 16th centuries. The painting was studied by non-destructive techniques (UV light and a portable X-Ray fluorescence) to obtain information on materials applied and possible later interventions. The results showed that the original pigments applied are common for that period of time: lead white (Pb) yellow and red ochres (Fe), massicot, (Pb), umbra (Mn, Fe), vermillion (Hg), azurite (Cu) and a copper based green pigment (Cu). The thin layer of gold, confirmed by Au peaks, is applied over the surface, on top of a red bole layer. Some black areas over the gilded surface contain Ag. Retouches contain Ti, Zn, Cr and Cd that confirm the use of modern pigments, such as titanium-zinc white, chrome green or cadmium red.
destructiva. The study of ancient metal artefacts includes nowadays the non-destructive analysis
by means of chemical-physical methods developed in the past decades. One of the most important
parameters to be known from a sample is its chemical composition, as this information
significantly contributes to the determination of several assumptions and to the response of
many questions arisen from the study of a valuable heritage object. X-ray fluorescence is a
well-known technique very much employed for the elemental analysis of ancient metal artefacts
and the new implementation of a microfocused X-ray beam described in this text increases
its applicability for the study of manufacture and decorative ancient techniques. This surface
analytical method is complemented with the Gamma Ray Transmission technique, which
has been employed in the bulk composition estimation of silver-copper coins and other copper
based alloy samples. We also describe a portable confocal microfluorescence system developed
by our Group to obtain non-destructive depth profiles.
In the year 2007 the process of conservation-restoration of the windows of the apostles that close the windows of the Chapter
Hall of Cloister of S. Fernando del Real Monasterio de Santa María la Real de las Huelgas de Burgos was completed the
process. A red glass obtained from the process of conservation and restoration has been characterized by Optical microscopy
by light reflected (OMLR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X ray fluorescence espectrpmetry (XRF),
Particle induced X ray emission (PIXE), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify the chemical composition and
structure. Chemical analys by XRF and PIXE are in the good agreement. The studied glass has a very original cross section,
consisting of a lightly greenish glass holder and multilayers of red glass, characteristic of the thirteenth and fourteenth
centuries. A elemental mapping of the cross-section showing the distribution of elements in the glass has been obtained by
micro PIXE analysis in a vacuum chamber
