    CER47-52SDR-37.In view of the findings of impartial agencies evaluating cloud seeding experiments and in view of the lack of understanding of cloud physics processes which are significant in weather control, for example, the contrary theories as to rain drop formation or as to whether there is a lack of ice crystals or an over-abundance of ice crystals in many cloud formations , a justifiable conclusion is that although cloud seeding probably has had some effect on precipitation, the effect has been on too small a scale to detect and the hopes of the public, fanned on by over-optimistic statements in the public press, have not been realized. However the results to date warrant full scale applied and theoretical experimentation both in the laboratory and in the field on cloud physics and the artificial stimulation of precipitation to determine the most favorable procedures and conditions for cloud seeding and to determine with any assurance the economical value of cloud seeding

    RAFCON: a Graphical Tool for Task Programming and Mission Control

    There are many application fields for robotic systems including service robotics, search and rescue missions, industry and space robotics. As the scenarios in these areas grow more and more complex, there is a high demand for powerful tools to efficiently program heterogeneous robotic systems. Therefore, we created RAFCON, a graphical tool to develop robotic tasks and to be used for mission control by remotely monitoring the execution of the tasks. To define the tasks, we use state machines which support hierarchies and concurrency. Together with a library concept, even complex scenarios can be handled gracefully. RAFCON supports sophisticated debugging functionality and tightly integrates error handling and recovery mechanisms. A GUI with a powerful state machine editor makes intuitive, visual programming and fast prototyping possible. We demonstrated the capabilities of our tool in the SpaceBotCamp national robotic competition, in which our mobile robot solved all exploration and assembly challenges fully autonomously. It is therefore also a promising tool for various RoboCup leagues.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Plateau Tank Apparatus for The Study of Liquid Bridges

    An apparatus has been constructed and used to study the equilibrium and dynamical behavior of liquid bridges under reduced effective gravity. Liquid bridges are created and manipulated using six independent computer controlled stepper motors which drive linear motion tables. The bridges are visualized with a high magnification coherent Fourier optical system and in an orthogonal view using incoherent white light. By calibrating a density hydrometer and measuring the interfacial energy between the bridge and bath, reliable Bond numbers as low as 10βˆ’4 can be created and held stable for extended periods of time. Dimensional control of the liquid bridges approaches one part in 10βˆ’4 for the aspect ratio and volume. The apparatus has been tested by measuring the static stability limits of axisymmetric bridges and comparing the results with previous theoretical predictions. Experimental error for the apparatus is Ξ΄Bo/Bo=0.03, δΛ/Ξ›=0.001 and Ξ΄V/V =0.001, where Bo is the Bond number, Ξ› is the aspect ratio of the bridge, and V is the dimensionless (relative) volume of the bridge

    Fluid-Structure Interaction Modelling of Neighboring Tubes with Primary Cilium Analysis

    We have developed a numerical model of two osculating cylindrical elastic renal tubules to investigate the impact of neighboring tubules on the stress applied to a primary cilium. We hypothesize that the stress at the base of the primary cilium will depend on the mechanical coupling of the tubules due to local constrained motion of the tubule wall. The objective of this work was to determine the in-plane stresses of a primary cilium attached to the inner wall of one renal tubule subject to the applied pulsatile flow, with a neighboring renal tube filled with stagnant fluid in close proximity to the primary tubule. We used the commercial software COMSOL (R) to model the fluid-structure interaction of the applied flow and tubule wall, and we applied a boundary load to the face of the primary cilium during this simulation to produces a stress at its base. We confirm our hypothesis by observing that on average the in-plane stresses are greater at the base of the cilium when there is a neighboring renal tube versus if there is no neighboring tube at all. In combination with the hypothesized function of a cilium as a biological fluid flow sensor, these results indicate that flow signaling may also depend on how the tubule wall is constrained by neighboring tubules. Our results may be limited in their interpretation due to the simplified nature of our model geometry, and further improvements to the model may potentially lead to the design of future experiments
