Exploiting analytics techniques in CMS computing monitoring

    No full text
The CMS experiment has collected an enormous volume of metadata about its computing operations in its monitoring systems, describing its experience in operating all of the CMS workflows on all of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid Tiers. Data mining efforts into all these information have rarely been done, but are of crucial importance for a better understanding of how CMS did successful operations, and to reach an adequate and adaptive modelling of the CMS operations, in order to allow detailed optimizations and eventually a prediction of system behaviours. These data are now streamed into the CERN Hadoop data cluster for further analysis. Specific sets of information (e.g. data on how many replicas of datasets CMS wrote on disks at WLCG Tiers, data on which datasets were primarily requested for analysis, etc) were collected on Hadoop and processed with MapReduce applications profiting of the parallelization on the Hadoop cluster. We present the implementation of new monitoring applications on Hadoop, and discuss the new possibilities in CMS computing monitoring introduced with the ability to quickly process big data sets from mulltiple sources, looking forward to a predictive modeling of the system

Trends in coastal fish stocks of the Baltic Sea

Coastal fish monitoring with multi-mesh gill nets and gill net series is carried out in eleven areas around the Baltic Sea. The purpose of the monitoring is to reveal population status and elucidate long-term trends of fish population and community development. Time series cover 9–20 years of annual monitoring, the last year being 2002. Significant increasing trends of perch and roach catches were observed in the archipelago region of the Sea of Åland and Archipelago Sea. A possible reason for these trends was ongoing coastal eutrophication. Significant trends with opposite directions appeared in two areas in the Gulf of Bothnia and two areas at the Swedish coast of the Baltic Proper. The Curonian Lagoon is severely affected by anthropogenic impact, structuring the local fish community. Indications of decreased eutrophication were noted in the Gulf of Riga. High fishing pressure during the 1990s in the West-Estonian archipelago and the following collapse of coastal fish stocks was apparent in the monitoring catches

Peculiarities of inventory management strategies of Lithuanian manufacturing companies

Inventory management and the related problems in manufacturing companies will always be a topical issue. In light of the fact that the manufacturing process must be continuous, there is an emerging need to build up inventories or to solve the issue of assurance of sufficient inventories by other means. Choosing an appropriate inventory management strategy is important in pursuit of this goal. This article examines peculiarities of inventory management strategies employed by Lithuanian manufacturing companies. The purpose is to investigate, what kind of strategies and for what reasons companies are using. This purpose was achieved during the conducted study based on the application of sophisticated questionnaire. Conducted research revealed that the applicability of JIT and 3PL inventory management strategies in Lithuania is limited
