Embracing the Market: Entry into Self-Employment in Transitional China, 1978-1996
This paper introduces labor market transition as an intervening process by which the macro institutional transition to a market economy alters social stratification outcome. Rather than directly addressing income distribution, it examines the pattern of workersâ entry into self-employment in reform-era China (1978-1996), focusing on rural-urban differences and the temporal trend. Analyses of data from a national representative survey in China show that education, party membership and cadre status all deter urban workersâ entry into self-employment, while education promotes rural workersâ entry into self-employment. As marketization proceeds, the rate of entry into self-employment increases in both rural and urban China, but urban workers are increasingly more likely to take advantages of the new market opportunities. In urban China, college graduates and cadres are still less likely to be involved in self-employment, but they are becoming more likely to do so in the later phase of reform. Abnormal brain glucose metabolism patterns in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer after chemotherapyïŒA retrospective PET study
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the acute or chronic post-chemotherapy effect and different chemotherapy cycles effect on brain glucose metabolism. Methods: A total of seventy-three patients who received chemotherapy after being diagnosed with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and underwent 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) scan at Nuclear Medicine Department of the Fifth Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University between September 2017 and August 2022 were included. Seventy-two healthy control patients who underwent whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT scans at our department, without any evidence of malignancy and confirmed by follow-up visits, were included. Advanced NSCLC patients were classified into six arms: short-to-long course (chemotherapy cycles under 4, between 5 and 8 and more than 8) in acute chemotherapy effect (AC) group (scanned 18F-FDG PET/CT within 6 months post-chemotherapy) or chronic chemotherapy effect (CC) group (the interval between scanning and the last chemotherapy session more than six months). Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) analysis between patientsâ groups and healthy controlsâ brain 18F-FDG PET was performed (uncorrected p Ë 0.001 with cluster size above 20 contiguous voxels). Results: There were no significant differences between patientsâ groups and healthy controls in age, gender and body mass index (BMI). SPM PET analyses revealed anomalous brain metabolic activity in different groups (p Ë 0.001). Short-course +Â AC group exhibited hypermetabolism in the cerebellum and widespread hypometabolism in bilateral frontal lobe predominantly. Only hypometabolic brain regions were observed in middle-course +Â AC patients. Long-course +Â AC group displayed a greater number of abnormalities. Notably, these metabolic abnormalities tended to decrease in CC groups versus AC groups across all courses. Conclusion: Our study revealed that patients with advanced NSCLC who underwent chemotherapy exhibited persistent abnormal brain metabolism patterns during continuous chemotherapy and these abnormalities tended to recover after completion of chemotherapy over time, but without correlation to an increasing number of chemotherapy cycles. 18F-FDG PET/CT may serve as a possible modality for evaluating brain function and guiding appropriate treatment timing
Clinical outcomes of olecranon sled fixation in patients with Mayo type II olecranon fractures
Background: Tension band wiring and plate fixation are common internal fixation methods used for olecranon fractures, but complications and reoperations are common. The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical outcomes of displaced olecranon fractures treated with olecranon sled internal fixation. Methods: The data of 39 patients with olecranon fractures treated with olecranon sled in the Department of Traumatology of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital between May 2018 and April 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 17 males and 22 females; the mean age was 44.0 ± 15.8 (range, 18â68 years). Preoperative olecranon fractures were classified according to the Mayo classification: 24 cases were type IIA and 15 cases were type IIB. Elbow range of motion (extension and flexion) and forearm rotation (protonation and supination) were observed at the last follow-up. The Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS), Disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were used to evaluate elbow function and pain, and complications were also recorded. Results: Thirty-nine patients were followed up for 33.6 ± 8.3 months (range, 25â51 months) after the operation. At the last follow-up, the mean flexion-extension arc was 137° ± 15° (range, 60°â160°), and the mean pronation-supination arc was 178° ± 4° (range, 160°â180°). The mean MEPS was 94.9 ± 9.9 (range, 50.0â100.0). The mean DASH score was 5.4 ± 4.3 (range, 0â18.3). The mean VAS score was 0.4 ± 0.8 (range, 0â3). Seven patients developed olecranon skin irritation, and 3 of them had the internal fixation device removed. Two patients developed heterotopic ossification, of whom 1 patient suffered elbow stiffness. Conclusion: Olecranon sled internal fixation has good clinical outcomes in the treatment of Mayo type II olecranon fractures with a low rate of reoperations
Fabrication of Millable Polyurethane Elastomer/Eucommia Ulmoides Rubber Composites with Superior Sound Absorption Performance
Sound absorbing materials combining millable polyurethane elastomer (MPU) and eucommia ulmoides rubber (EUG) were successfully fabricated via a physical blending process of EUG and MPU. The microstructure, crystallization performances, damping, mechanical and sound absorption properties of the prepared MPU/EUG composites were investigated systematically. The microstructure surface of various MPU/EUG composites became rough and cracked by the gradual incorporation of EUG, resulting in a deteriorated compatibility between EUG and MPU. With the increase of EUG content, the storage modulus (Eâ) of various MPU/EUG composites increased in a temperature range of â50 °C to 40 °C and their loss factor (tanÎŽ) decreased significantly, including a reduction of the tanÎŽ of MPU/EUG (70/30) composites from 0.79 to 0.64. Specifically, the addition of EUG sharply improved the sound absorption performances of various MPU/EUG composites in a frequency range of 4.5 kHzâ8 kHz. Compared with that of pure MPU, the sound absorption coefficient of the MPU/EUG (70/30) composite increased 52.2% at a pressure of 0.1 MPa and 16.8% at a pressure of 4 MPa, indicating its outstanding sound absorption properties
Overexpression of a Senescence-Related Gene CpSRG1 from Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) Promoted Growth and Flowering, and Delayed Senescence in Transgenic Arabidopsis
Plant senescence is a complex process that is controlled by developmental regulation and genetic programs. A senescence-related gene CpSRG1, which belongs to the 2OG-Fe(II) dioxygenase superfamily, was characterized from wintersweet, and the phylogenetic relationship of CpSRG1 with homologs from other species was investigated. The expression analysis by qRT-PCR (quantitative real-time PCR) indicated that CpSRG1 is abundant in flower organs, especially in petals and stamens, and the highest expression of CpSRG1 was detected in stage 6 (withering period). The expression patterns of the CpSRG1 gene were further confirmed in CpSRG1pro::GUS (β-glucuronidase) plants, and the activity of the CpSRG1 promoter was enhanced by exogenous Eth (ethylene), SA (salicylic acid), and GA3 (gibberellin). Heterologous overexpression of CpSRG1 in Arabidopsis promoted growth and flowering, and delayed senescence. Moreover, the survival rates were significantly higher and the root lengths were significantly longer in the transgenic lines than in the wild-type plants, both under low nitrogen stress and GA3 treatment. This indicated that the CpSRG1 gene may promote the synthesis of assimilates in plants through the GA pathway, thereby improving growth and flowering, and delaying senescence in transgenic Arabidopsis. Our study has laid a satisfactory foundation for further analysis of senescence-related genes in wintersweet and wood plants. It also enriched our knowledge of the 2OG-Fe(II) dioxygenase superfamily, which plays a variety of important roles in plants
