    Assessing the association between hypoxia during craniofacial development and oral clefts

    Objectives: To evaluate the association between hypoxia during embryo development and oral clefts in an animal model, and to evaluate the association between polymorphisms in the HIF-1A gene with oral clefts in human families. Material and Methods: The study with the animal model used zebrafish embryos at 8 hours post-fertilization submitted to 30% and 50% hypoxia for 24 hours. At 5 days post-fertilization, the larvae were fixed. The cartilage structures were stained to evaluate craniofacial phenotypes. The family-based association study included 148 Brazilian nuclear families with oral clefts. The association between the genetic polymorphisms rs2301113 and rs2057482 in HIF-1A with oral clefts was tested. We used real time PCR genotyping approach. ANOVA with Tukey's post-test was used to compare means. The transmission/disequilibrium test was used to analyze the distortion of the inheritance of alleles from parents to their affected offspring. Results: For the hypoxic animal model, the anterior portion of the ethmoid plate presented a gap in the anterior edge, forming a cleft. The hypoxia level was associated with the severity of the phenotype (p<0.0001). For the families, there was no under-transmitted allele among the affected progeny (p>0.05). Conclusion: Hypoxia is involved in the oral cleft etiology, however, polymorphisms in HIF-1A are not associated with oral clefts in humans

    Understanding aspirations and expectations of international students in Australian higher education

    The aspirations and expectations of the growing international student cohort in Australia are implicitly incorporated into recruitment and internationalization strategies but have received little academic analysis. To address this gap in the literature, this paper develops a conceptual model built upon earlier research by Tim Mazzarol and Geoffrey Soutar, which focuses on the push and pull factors relating to home country and country of destination, respectively, in relation to students&rsquo; decisions to seek international study. Focusing predominantly on Chinese and Indian students, we conceptualize, extend and place the push and pull factors within a social psychological framework in relation to students&rsquo; aspirations and expectations of international education, indicating factors that can be influenced by higher education (HE) institutions and their programmes, and those which cannot. We then interrogate the model and its applicability in Australian HE through the case study of an Indian international Study Tour conducted in our Australian HE institution in 2009. In the present context of decreased international student enrolments in Australia in 2010, where we seek to better understand our international students, the proposed model provides a basis for identifying international students&rsquo; expectations and aspirations and developing prospective international relations

    Competitive strategy in socially entrepreneurial nonprofit organizations: innovation and differentiation

    Social entrepreneurship has attracted an increasing volume of research in an attempt to understand the basis of successful value creation aimed at solving social problems. In an effort to advance social entrepreneurship research beyond its current focus on conceptualizing the concept, this article addresses the role of innovation in achieving greater social impact. Using multiple theoretical case studies, this research finds that innovation-based competitive strategies of socially entrepreneurial nonprofit organizations substantially contribute to the achievement of social value. Innovation-based strategies are uniquely characterized by a primary focus on differentiation, with innovations directed at product, process, and system change levels. They tend to actively involve both externally and internally focused learning. Nonprofit organizations' innovation strategies are strongly influenced by their organizational characteristics, in particular the need to build sustainable organizations. The article concludes with implications for theory and practice and directions for further research
