CALORIE COUNTING APPLICATION FEEDBACK: POTENTIAL IMPACT ON THE TEENAGE FEMALE PSYCHE

From an early age, girls are surrounded by a desire to be thin. Because of this, eating disorders are a growing epidemic. Technology has been infused into the dietary world, enabling people to diet by themselves as long as Wi-Fi is present. Caloric input applications (apps that count calories) (CCA) have become the efficient way to monitor dietary choices. CCAs use feedback to alert users of proper caloric intake. It was hypothesized that if a diet that ranged between 800-1200 calories a day was entered into a CCA, then feedback generated would be more positive as compared to negative. During three weeks, the dietary choices of the principle investigator (P.I.) were entered into two CCAs. Three dietary profiles were used to simulate the eating habits of an adolescent female. Caloric intake was tracked three times a day and feedback was collected. A certified psychologist classified the feedback. It was determined that there was a relationship between calories entered into the app and the type of feedback generated. Future studies should focus on the development of a CCA that focuses more on when the user is eating rather than calories.Dès l’enfance, les filles sont entourées des messages leur incitant d’un désir d’être minces. La consommation calorique a été surveillée trois fois par jour et une collecte d’information rassemblée. Un psychologue certifié a analysé la collecte d’information. Il a été conclu qu’il y avait une relation directe entre la saisie des calories dans l’app et les observations correspondent généré par ceci. Des études futures devraient se concentrer sur le développement d’un ACC qui se concentre plus sur l’heure pendant lequel l’utilisateur saisie les données (c’est-à-dire, le moment quand l’utilisateur mange) plutôt que le calcul des calories

Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy as a cause of acute kidney injury in dogs in the UK

To describe the signalment, clinicopathological findings and outcome in dogs presenting with acute kidney injury (AKI) and skin lesions between November 2012 and March 2014, in whom cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) was suspected and renal thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) was histopathologically confirmed. The medical records of dogs with skin lesions and AKI, with histopathologically confirmed renal TMA, were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty dogs from across the UK were identified with clinicopathological findings compatible with CRGV. These findings included the following: skin lesions, predominantly affecting the distal extremities; AKI; and variably, anaemia, thrombocytopaenia and hyperbilirubinaemia. Known causes of AKI were excluded. The major renal histopathogical finding was TMA. All thirty dogs died or were euthanised. Shiga toxin was not identified in the kidneys of affected dogs. Escherichia coli genes encoding shiga toxin were not identified in faeces from affected dogs. CRGV has previously been reported in greyhounds in the USA, a greyhound in the UK, without renal involvement, and a Great Dane in Germany. This is the first report of a series of non-greyhound dogs with CRGV and AKI in the UK. CRGV is a disease of unknown aetiology carrying a poor prognosis when azotaemia develops

Higher Standards for Higher Education: Intersectionality in the College Curriculum

In a time where marginalized groups are facing institutional and interpersonal oppression, intersectionality is a crucial theory understanding how the intersections of different facets of identity (e.g., race, gender, age, sexuality, socioeconomic class, ability) expose people to privilege, power, and oppression. The present study is based on how intersectionality related to the theories of critical consciousness and social dominance, as well as research on identification with the feminist movement, experience with gender and women’s studies courses, and levels of self-esteem. It was designed to assess students’ willingness to take a college course that incorporates intersectional content. A total of 114 Connecticut College students from various psychology courses participated in the study. Two syllabi for a hypothetical freshman year seminar about criminal justice in the United States were prepared. The experimental syllabus used an intersectional framework to explore criminal justice and specifically included content about marginalized populations, whereas the control syllabus focused on the criminal justice system more generally. Students were randomly placed either in the experimental or control condition, read the syllabus, and then answered a questionnaire about their interest in the course. This was followed by measures of critical consciousness, social dominance orientation, and self-esteem, and questions about experience with and interest in gender and women’s studies and feminist identity. Higher levels of critical consciousness and lower levels of social dominance orientation significantly predicted willingness to take the intersectional course. These results support previous research about the relationship among critical consciousness, social dominance orientation, and intersectionality
