    Loneliness in middle childhood: Concurrent and longitudinal predictors

    The role of behavioral, sociometric, and attributional indices of social functioning in the development of peer-related loneliness was investigated in a short-term longitudinal study. Data were collected across a 1-year time span on 3 occasions from 128 third- through sixth-graders. Results were consistent with an additive model of loneliness. Withdrawn social behavior, lower peer acceptance, few or no friendships, and an internal-stable attributional style predicted higher levels of concurrent and future loneliness. Children who declined in peer acceptance, lost friends, and gained in internal-stable attributions showed gains in loneliness. Subgroup analyses indicated that children with no friends reported more loneliness than children with 1 or more friends; low-status friendless children reported more loneliness than low-status children with one or more friends; and low-status friendless children reported more loneliness than average- and high-status friendless children. Taken together, the findings suggest that loneliness in middle childhood is a stable phenomenon located in a complex web of interrelated aspects of social functioning

    Localization of enkephalin immunoreactivity in the spinal cord of the long-tailed ray Himantura fai

    Enkephalin-like immunoreactivity (ENK-LI) was found throughout the spinal cord of the long-tailed ray Himantura fai. The densest ENK-LI was in the superficial portion of lamina A of the dorsal horn. Lamina B and the deeper parts of lamina A contained radially oriented, labelled fibres. Laminae C, D, and E contained many longitudinally orientated fascicles which were surrounded by a reticulum of transversely orientated, labelled fibres, some of which projected into the ventral and lateral funiculi. Labelled fibres were found in the dorsal commissure and around the central canal, but the later did not cross the midline. One-third of all enkephalinergic cells were found throughout laminae A and B, while two-thirds were located in the medial half of C, D, and E. Occasionally a labelled cell was located in the lateral funiculus. The ventral horn (laminae F and G) contained many enkephalinergic fibres but no labelled nuclei. A few dorsal column axons contained ENK-LI. In the lateral funiculus there were two groups of labelled axons, a superficial, dorsolateral group, and a deeper group, occupying a crescent-shaped region. The ventral funiculus also contained many labelled axons. The central projection of the dorsal root passed through the substantia gelatinosa and divided into rostrally and caudally projecting fascicles within lamina C. The root, and these fascicles, both lacked ENK-LI. In contrast, the fascicles in laminae D and E did contain enkephalinergic fibres. The origin of the various fibre systems and the role of enkephalin in the regulation of sensory processing and motor output are discussed

    Ticrynafen and hydrochlorothiazide a comparison in hypertensive patients with renal impairment

    The efficacy of ticrynafen in the treatment of hypertension in patients with moderate renal impairment was compared with that of hydrochlorothiazide in a randomised, double-blind crossover trial in eleven subjects with renal insufficiency. Significant reductions in blood pressure occurred with both treatments, with the maximum responses occurring at different time intervals and to different degrees in individual patients. Thus, although ticrynafen caused a significant reduction in blood pressure in this group of hypertensive patients with renal insufficiency, it was not consistently different from that which could be achieved with hydrochlorothiazide. Ticrynafen also significantly reduced the serum uric acid concentration, compared with a significant rise with hydrochlorothiazide. No major biochemical abnormalities or side-effects were encountered in any subject. Thus, in these patients with renal insufficiency, ticrynafen still demonstrated a uricosuric effect as well as a useful anti-hypertensive action
