Empathetic encounters of children’s augmented storying across the human and more-than-human worlds

This study brings empathy to the centre of literacy practice by investigating children's augmented storying as it was related to empathetic encounters across the human and more-than-human worlds. The study applies sociomaterial theorising that defines empathy as relational and emergent across human-material-spatial-temporal assemblages. The empirical study was situated in a Finnish primary school in which children used an augmented story-crafting tool (MyAR Julle) to explore their local environment and to create and share their stories. The findings show how empathy emerged situationally across the children, other human beings, materials, technology and the natural world. The empathetic encounters of the children's narratives were more than romantic or smooth encounters, instead competing and in tension with one another, calling moral reasoning and agency. The study shows the potential of sociomaterial theorising to change the way we think about children's encounters with the world, using empathy as a framework.Peer reviewe

Playful Parts : The Joy of Learning Multiliteracies

This book has been written for all those adults who are interested in promoting young children’s multiliteracy skills. We gave this book the title Playful Parts: The Joy of Learning Multiliteracies. “Playful Parts” is a metaphor that we use to encourage children and adults to use their imagination and creativity in teaching and learning multiliteracy skills. Playful Parts are open to pedagogical interpretation and can be applied in a variety of ways to meet the needs of particular children, situations and circumstances. They can be extensively used in different settings, such as, nurseries, schools, libraries, science centres, museums and homes. We hope that Playful Parts will come to life in a variety of forms when applied to activities participated in by adults and children and that they generate new approaches to enhance the joy of teaching and learning multiliteracy skills

Bubblan : multilitteracitet med glädje för små barn

Bubblan är en bilderbok designad speciellt för små barn (0-6 år). Den engagerande och inkluderande berättelsen handlar om en liten såpbubbla vid namn Bubblan som är ute på äventyr. Bokens händelseförlopp, illustrationer och engagerande aktiviteter är utvecklade för att främja barns multilitteracitet. Boken välkomnar barnen att multimodalt och med sina sinnen utforska bokens illustrationer och handlingar tillsammans med Bubblan, genom att kombinera visuellt, kroppsligt och emotionellt reflekterande och uttryck. Boken uppmanar också barnen att utforska miljöer och att hitta på egna äventyr till Bubblan. I bokens berättelse har Bubblan hamnat i skogen. Berättelsen uppmanar barnen till gemensamma upplevelser med Bubblan. Barnen uppmuntras att leka och fantisera tillsamman med Bubblan. Slutet av berättelsen är designad för att inspirera barnen till att skapa egna bubblor och hitta på äventyr till dem. AR-teknologin som används i boken berikar läsupplevelsen. Boken tillämpar sig till småbarnspedagogiken, förskole- och nybörjarundervisningen, eftermiddags- och klubbverksamhet, samt till hemmabruk

Kupla : monilukutaitoa pienten lasten iloksi

Kupla-kuvakirja on suunnattu erityisesti pienille (0-6 vuotiaille) lapsille. Osallistavassa ja toiminnallisessa kuvakirjassa seikkailee pieni saippuakupla nimeltään Kupla. Kirja on suunniteltu edistämään pienten lasten monilukutaidon kehittymistä tarinan, kuvitusten ja toiminnallisten aktiviteettien kautta. Sen tavoitteena on innostaa lapsia tutkimaan ja tulkitsemaan tarinan ja kuvitusten maailmaa yhdessä Kuplan kanssa multimodaalisesti ja moniaistillisesti. Se rohkaisee lapsia myös omaan tarinankerrontaan ja ympäristön tutkimiseen. Kirjan tarinassa pieni ‘Kupla’ on päätynyt metsään. Tarina kutsuu lapsia yhteiseen seikkailuun Kuplan kanssa. Nordic Childhoods in the Digital Age. Insights into Contemporary Research on Communication, Learning and Education.

This book adds to the international research literature on contemporary Nordic childhoods in the context of fast-evolving technologies. It draws on the workshop program of the Nordic Research Network on Digital Childhoods funded by the Joint Committee for Nordic research councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS) during the years 2019–2021. Bringing together researchers from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland, the book addresses pressing issues around children’s communication, learning and education in the digital age. The volume sheds light on cultural values, educational policies and conceptions of children and childhood, and child–media relationships inherent in Nordic societies. The book argues for the importance of understanding local cultures, values and communication practices that make up contemporary digital childhoods and extends current discourses on children’s screen time to bring in new insights about the nature of children’s digital engagement. This book will appeal to researchers, graduate students, educators and policy makers in the fields of childhood education, educational technology and communication
