The present monograph proposes to analyze the possibilities of action of indigenous women in face of changes in the status of mixed marriages and the matrimonial institution itself, in the context of the implementation of the Directory of Indians (1757) in the State of GrĂŁo-Pará and MaranhĂŁo, especially in the newly created Captaincy of SĂŁo JosĂ© do Rio Negro (1755). Taking into account the hypothesis that from their choices and behaviors the indigenous women could "dictate" the rhythm of the colonization process of the Captaincy of the Rio Negro, which can be investigated in the documented corpus that includes legislative pieces, administrative letters, ecclesiastical offices, pastoral visits, inquisitorial processes

Denying Sovereignties: Empires, Maps, and Runaway Indigenous People and Maroons in Amazonian Borderlands (1777-1800)
Located on the Atlantic coast of the Amazon’s northernmost reaches, the North Cape was a remote but resource-rich region in halfway between the French colonial outpost of Cayenne and the Portuguese port city of Belém. In between these imperial jurisdictions, Indigenous groups and maroons’ communities flourished with independent productivity and mobility, demonstrating the limits of empires’ oversight. Most scholarship on French-Portuguese disputes over Amazonian territories has centered on how statesmen and high-ranking figures defined these borderlands through diplomatic accords. Yet inter-imperial contexts and cartographical discourses they generated wholly depended on the geographical knowledge of captured runaways. Indeed, Portuguese officials were routinely thrown into confusing by these autonomous communities they depended on for knowing the region. Ultimately, Portuguese officials promoted the displacement of the North Cape’s inhabitants, since imperial authorities feared to lose these communities to French Guiana’s lures
By putting in dialogue the indigenous history and the history of urbanism – normally addressed separately – this article intends to present the indigenous action as one of the most important, if not the main, explanatory factors on the morphology of the european conquest in Portuguese America, in this case thought as the spaces that were effectively occupied in the form of vilas and cidades. To examine this statement, chronicles were used, one of the 16th century, the other of the 17th and the last one of the 18th century, evaluating the dynamics of this occupation throughout time. A evaluation of some regional cases was made based on a recent historiographie centered on the value that indigenous groups had in the process of european occupation, considering its multiple possibilities of action in different regions. Lastly, aggregated data on the establishment of vilas was compared with information on the sighting of natives over the course of the colonial period, demonstrating the strong relation between both processes
