    Design and optimization of electrochemical microreactors for continuous electrosynthesis

    The study focuses on the design and construction, as well as the theoretical and experimental optimization of electrochemical filter press microreactors for the electrosynthesis of molecules with a high added value. The main characteristics of these devices are firstly a high-specific electrochemical area to increase conversion and selectivity, and secondly the shape and size of themicrochannels designed for a uniform residence time distribution of the fluid. A heat exchanger is integrated into the microstructured electrode to rapidly remove (or supply) the heat required in exo- or endothermic reactions. The microreactors designed are used to perform-specific electrosynthesis reactions such as thermodynamically unfavorable reactions (continuous NADH regeneration), or reactions with high enthalpy changes

    Constraints on the Cosmic Infra-Red Background based on BeppoSAX and CAT spectra of Mkn 501

    The TeV and X-ray data obtained by the imaging Cherenkov telescope CAT and X-ray satellite BeppoSAX during the remarkable flare of Mkn 501 in April 16, 1997 are used to constrain the flux of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) using different CIB models. We show that a non-negligible absorption of gamma-rays due to the CIB could take place already in the low-energy (sub-TeV) domain of the spectrum of Mkn 501. This implies that the data of the low-energy threshold CAT telescope contain very important information about the CIB at short wavelengths, 0.4 mum <= lambda <= 3. mum. The analysis of almost simultaneous spectroscopic measurements of Mkn 501 in a high state by CAT and BeppoSAX in the framework of the standard homogeneous Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) framework model leads to the conclusion that the density of the near-infrared background with typical ``starlight spectrum'' around 1 mum should be between 5 and 35 nW m^-2 sr^-1 (99 % CL), with most likely value around 20 nW m^-2 sr^-1. Also we argue that the CAT gamma-ray data alone allow rather robust upper limits on the CIB, lambda F_lambda <= 60 nW m^-2 sr^-1 at 1 mum, taking into account that for any reasonable scenario of gamma-ray production the differential intrinsic spectrum of gamma-ray hardly could be flatter than dN/dE == E^-1. This estimate agrees, within statistical and systematic uncertainties, with recent reports about tentative detections of the CIB at 2.2 and 3.5 mum by the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE), as well as with the measurements of the background radiation at optical wavelengths from absolute photometry. We also discuss the impact of the intergalactic absorption effect in derivation of the SSC parameters for the jet in Mkn 501

    Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras of Hausdorff etale groupoids

    The reduced CC^*-algebra of the interior of the isotropy in any Hausdorff \'etale groupoid GG embeds as a CC^*-subalgebra MM of the reduced CC^*-algebra of GG. We prove that the set of pure states of MM with unique extension is dense, and deduce that any representation of the reduced CC^*-algebra of GG that is injective on MM is faithful. We prove that there is a conditional expectation from the reduced CC^*-algebra of GG onto MM if and only if the interior of the isotropy in GG is closed. Using this, we prove that when the interior of the isotropy is abelian and closed, MM is a Cartan subalgebra. We prove that for a large class of groupoids GG with abelian isotropy---including all Deaconu--Renault groupoids associated to discrete abelian groups---MM is a maximal abelian subalgebra. In the specific case of kk-graph groupoids, we deduce that MM is always maximal abelian, but show by example that it is not always Cartan.Comment: 14 pages. v2: Theorem 3.1 in v1 incorrect (thanks to A.     Constrained Dynamics of Universally Coupled Massive Spin 2-spin 0 Gravities

    The 2-parameter family of massive variants of Einstein's gravity (on a Minkowski background) found by Ogievetsky and Polubarinov by excluding lower spins can also be derived using universal coupling. A Dirac-Bergmann constrained dynamics analysis seems not to have been presented for these theories, the Freund-Maheshwari-Schonberg special case, or any other massive gravity beyond the linear level treated by Marzban, Whiting and van Dam. Here the Dirac-Bergmann apparatus is applied to these theories. A few remarks are made on the question of positive energy. Being bimetric, massive gravities have a causality puzzle, but it appears soluble by the introduction and judicious use of gauge freedom.Comment: 6 pages; Talk given at QG05, Cala Gonone (Italy), September 200

    Type I D-branes in an H-flux and twisted KO-theory

    Witten has argued that charges of Type I D-branes in the presence of an H-flux, take values in twisted KO-theory. We begin with the study of real bundle gerbes and their holonomy. We then introduce the notion of real bundle gerbe KO-theory which we establish is a geometric realization of twisted KO-theory.     Quantized reduction as a tensor product

    Symplectic reduction is reinterpreted as the composition of arrows in the category of integrable Poisson manifolds, whose arrows are isomorphism classes of dual pairs, with symplectic groupoids as units. Morita equivalence of Poisson manifolds amounts to isomorphism of objects in this category. This description paves the way for the quantization of the classical reduction procedure, which is based on the formal analogy between dual pairs of Poisson manifolds and Hilbert bimodules over C*-algebras, as well as with correspondences between von Neumann algebras. Further analogies are drawn with categories of groupoids (of algebraic, measured, Lie, and symplectic type). In all cases, the arrows are isomorphism classes of appropriate bimodules, and their composition may be seen as a tensor product.
