Life beyond the classroom: The transition to retirement by long-serving educators

Using a qualitative, multiple case study research approach, the personal stories of eight K-12 educators who retired within the past six years were gathered and analyzed. The goal of the study was to understand how educators struggle, or do not struggle, with the life changing event of bringing closure to a career after spending decades in the classroom. Upon analysis of the data, three key themes were identified: 1. The individuals had control over the timing of their retirement; all participants knew it was the right time to make the transition out of the classroom. 2. Each person is happy with both the choices they made in the retirement process, and with the life they now lead. 3. While the length of time and degree of involvement differed, each person wanted to remain connected to their school and colleagues once the decision was made to retire. The study revealed some of the struggles and joys the individuals experienced during their transition out of the classroom environment. From increased freedom to choose what to do on the spur of the moment, to being able to help elderly parents struggling with health problems, the participants in this study were busy on a day-to-day basis and had established a new balance and flow to their life

Reconstruction d'un clone de visage 3D à partir de patchs de forme

National audienceUn clone de visage 3D sémantique peut être utilisé comme prétraitement dans des applications comme l’analyse des émotions.Toutefois, ces clones doivent avoir la forme du visage bien modélisée tout en gardant la spécificité des individus. Dans notre technique, nousutilisons un capteur RVB-Z pour obtenir la spécificité des individus et un modèle déformable de visage 3D pour marquer la forme du visage.Nous gardons les parties appropriées de données de profondeur appelés Patch. Cette sélection est effectuée en utilisant une erreur de distanceet la direction des vecteurs normaux de chaque point. Selon l’emplacement, nous fusionnons soit les données des capteurs soit les donnéesobtenues avec le modèle déformable. Nous comparons notre méthode avec un processus de fitting classique. Les tests qualitatifs montrent quenos résultats sont plus précis qu’une méthode de fitting classique et les tests quantitatifs montrent que notre clone possède à la fois les spécificitésde la personne et la forme du visage bien modélisée

Collective orientation of an immobile fish school, effect on rheotaxis

We study the orientational order of an immobile fish school. Starting from the second Newton's law, we show that the inertial dynamics of orientations is ruled by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This process describes the dynamics of alignment between neighboring fish in a shoal, a dynamics already used in the literature for mobile fish schools. Firstly, in a fluid at rest, we calculate the global polarization (i.e. the mean orientation of the fish) which decreases rapidly as a function of the noise. We show that the faster a fish is able to reorient itself, the more the school can afford to reorder itself for important noise values. Secondly, in the prescence of a stream, each fish tends to orient itself and swims against the flow: the so-called rheotaxis. So even in the presence of a flow, it results in an immobile fish school. By adding an individual rheotaxis effect to alignment interaction between fish, we show that in a noisy environment, individual rheotaxis is enhanced by alignment interactions between fish.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
