Pulsed versus DC I-V characteristics of resistive manganites
We report on pulsed and DC I-V characteristics of polycrystalline samples of
three charge-ordered manganites, Pr_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3, Pr_{1/2}Ca_{1/2}MnO_3,
Bi_{1/2}Sr_{1/2}MnO_3 and of a double-perovskite Sr_2MnReO_6, in a temperature
range where their ohmic resistivity obeys the Efros-Shklovskii variable range
hopping relation. For all samples, the DC I(V) exhibits at high currents
negative differential resistance and hysteresis, which mask a perfectly ohmic
or a moderately nonohmic conductivity obtained by pulsed measurements. This
demonstrates that the widely used DC I-V measurements are usually misleading.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication to AP
Inter-grain tunneling in the half-metallic double-perovskites SrBB'O (BB'-- FeMo, FeRe, CrMo, CrW, CrRe
The zero-field conductivities () of the polycrystaline title
materials, are governed by inter-grain transport. In the majority of cases
their (T) can be described by the "fluctuation induced tunneling"
model. Analysis of the results in terms of this model reveals two remarkable
features: 1. For \emph{all} SrFeMoO samples of various microstructures,
the tunneling constant (barrier width inverse decay-length of the
wave-function) is 2, indicating the existence of an intrinsic insulating
boundary layer with a well defined electronic (and magnetic) structure. 2. The
tunneling constant for \emph{all} cold-pressed samples decreases linearly with
increasing magnetic-moment/formula-unit.Comment: 10 pages, 2 tables, 3 figure
Extension Communicators: More Important Players In An Old Game
This paper explores tentative ideas about the effects which extension communicators might have on the relationship between agri-business writers and writers and editors for farm magazines and newspaper farm departments. An open-ended questionnaire was sent to members of two professional agricultural journalist associations: Newspaper Farm Editors Association and the American Agricultural Editors Association. Responses identified advertising and public relations writers as the principal perceived source of ethical dilemmas in agricultural journalism. None identified extension communicators as a source of concern. We suggest that the availability of extension news acts as a buffer for agricultural newspaper and magazine writers, protecting them from relying more heavily on agribusiness news copy
A simple approach to the correlation of rotovibrational states in four-atomic molecules
The problem of correlation between quantum states of four-atomic molecules in
different geometrical configurations is reviewed in detail. A general, still
simple rule is obtained which allows one to correlate states of a linear

Sing to me, baby: Infants show neural tracking and rhythmic movements to live and dynamic maternal singing
Infant-directed singing has unique acoustic characteristics that may allow even very young infants to respond to the rhythms carried through the caregiver’s voice. The goal of this study was to examine neural and movement responses to live and dynamic maternal singing in 7-month-old infants and their relation to linguistic development. In total, 60 mother-infant dyads were observed during two singing conditions (playsong and lullaby). In Study 1 (n = 30), we measured infant EEG and used an encoding approach utilizing ridge regressions to measure neural tracking. In Study 2 (n =40), we coded infant rhythmic movements. In both studies, we assessed children’s vocabulary when they were 20 months old. In Study 1, we found above-threshold neural tracking of maternal singing, with superior tracking of lullabies than playsongs. We also found that the acoustic features of infant-directed singing modulated tracking. In Study 2, infants showed more rhythmic movement to playsongs than lullabies. Importantly, neural coordination (Study 1) and rhythmic movement (Study 2) to playsongs were positively related to infants’ expressive vocabulary at 20 months. These results highlight the importance of infants’ brain and movement coordination to their caregiver’s musical presentations, potentially as a function of musical variability

Carbon dots as photosensitisers for solar-driven catalysis
Artificial photosynthesis is the mimicry of the natural process of solar energy conversion into chemical energy carriers. Photocatalytic systems that combine light-harvesting materials and catalysts in solution or suspension provide a promising route towards this goal. A key requirement for a sustainable solar fuel production system is a low-cost, stable and non-toxic light harvester. Photoluminescent carbon nanoparticles, carbon dots (CDs), are promising emerging light-harvesters for photocatalytic fuel production systems. CDs possess many desirable properties for this purpose, such as inexpensive, scalable synthetic routes, low-toxicity and tuneable surface chemistry. In this tutorial review, the integration of CDs in photocatalytic fuel generation systems with metallic, molecular and enzymatic catalysts is discussed. An overview of CD types, synthesis and properties is given along with a discussion of tuneable CD properties that can be optimised for applications in photocatalysis. Statics and dynamics of single DNA molecules confined in nanochannels
The successful design of nanofluidic devices for the manipulation of biopolymers requires an understanding of how the predictions of soft condensed matter physics scale with device dimensions. Here we present measurements of DNA extended in nanochannels and show that below a critical width roughly twice the persistence length there is a crossover in the polymer physics
