    Urinary porphyrin excretion in hepatitis C infection

    A high prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in porphyria cutanea tarda in some populations suggests a close link between viral hepatitis and alteration of porphyrin metabolism. Moreover, there is evidence of a role of porphyrinopathies in hepatocarcinogenesis. The aim of our study was to obtain data on the prevalence and patterns of heme metabolism alterations in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Urinary porphyrin excretion was prospectively studied in 100 consecutive outpatients with chronic hepatitis C infection without signs of photosensitivity, using an ion-pair high performance liquid chromatography method. Increased total porphyrin excretion was found in 41 patients, with predominant excretion of coproporphyrins (whole study group: mean 146 mu g/g creatinine, interquartile range 76-186; normal <150), in 10 patients excretion exceeded 300 mu g/g creatinine. In the majority of all patients studied (75/100) an increased ratio of the relatively hydrophobic coproporphyrin isomer I to isomer III was found. In just one case, urinary porphyrin pattern characteristic for chronic hepatic porphyria was present (uroporphyrin > coproporphyrin, heptacarboxyporphyrin III increased) but the total porphyrin excretion was only slightly elevated in this case. In the whole group, total urinary porphyrin excretion correlated well with serum bilirubin and was inversely correlated with albumin and thrombin time. In conclusion, secondary coproporphyrinuria occurs frequently in heptatitis C infection, whereas in Germany, preclinical porphyria cutanea tarda seems to be rare in these patients

    Fostering energy awareness in residential homes using mobile devices

    There is considerable global effort being made towards identifying ways of reducing energy consumption to cope with growing demands. Although there is potential for energy saving in many sectors, our focus is on reducing energy consumption in residential homes. We have developed a system which combines home automation and energy usage monitoring technologies. The system offers a range of tools designed for mobile devices to assist users with monitoring their energy usage and provides mechanisms for setting up and controlling home appliances to conserve energy. In this paper we describe our system and a user study we have conducted to evaluate its effectiveness. The findings of the study show the potential benefits of this type of mobile technology

    USEM: A ubiquitous smart energy management system for residential homes

    With the ever-increasing worldwide demand for energy, and the limited available energy resources, there is a growing need to reduce our energy consumption whenever possible. Therefore, over the past few decades a range of technologies have been proposed to assist consumers with reducing their energy use. Most of these have focused on decreasing energy consumption in the industry, transport, and services sectors. In more recent years, however, growing attention has been given to energy use in the residential sector, which accounts for nearly 30% of total energy consumption in the developed countries. Here we present one such system, which aims to assist residential users with monitoring their energy usage and provides mechanisms for setting up and controlling their home appliances to conserve energy. We also describe a user study we have conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this system in supporting its users with a range of tools and visualizations developed for ubiquitous devices such as mobile phones and tablets. The findings of this study have shown the potential benefits of our system, and have identified areas of improvement that need to be addressed in the future

    Assisting Inhabitants of Residential Homes with Management of Their Energy Consumption

    Although there are already a range of energy monitoring and automation systems available in the market that target residential homes, mostly with the aim of reducing their total energy consumption, very few of these systems are directly concerned with how those energy savings are actually made. As such, these systems do not provide tools that would allow users to make intelligent decisions about their energy usage strategies, and encourage them to change their energy use behaviour. In this paper we describe a system designed to facilitate planning and control of energy usage activities in residential homes. We also report on a user study of this system which demonstrates its potential for making energy savings possible

    Zero forcing is an iterative graph coloring process, where given a set of initially colored vertices, a colored vertex with a single uncolored neighbor causes that neighbor to become colored. A zero forcing set is a set of initially colored vertices which causes the entire graph to eventually become colored. In this paper, we study the counting problem associated with zero forcing. We introduce the zero forcing polynomial of a graph GG of order nn as the polynomial Z(G;x)=∑i=1nz(G;i)xi\mathcal{Z}(G;x)=\sum_{i=1}^n z(G;i) x^i, where z(G;i)z(G;i) is the number of zero forcing sets of GG of size ii. We characterize the extremal coefficients of Z(G;x)\mathcal{Z}(G;x), derive closed form expressions for the zero forcing polynomials of several families of graphs, and explore various structural properties of Z(G;x)\mathcal{Z}(G;x), including multiplicativity, unimodality, and uniqueness.Comment: 23 page

    Development of a Web Based Monitoring System for a Distributed and Modern Production

    AbstractWeb technologies have experienced a rapid development in recent years. In particular web browsers enhanced their abilities because of the improvement of JavaScript, CSS3 and HTML5. Hence, richer web-based software solutions with an increasing range of functions are available. By using responsive web design (RWD), a technology to display content without resizing on different screens, developers are able to support a diverse range of devices with small effort.In order to enable a monitoring of the current status of a production system, signals of many different sensors, machine and production data are required. Combining microcontrollers with sensors to embedded sensors enables an efficient way to communicate with web services. Due to the strong decline of prices for semiconductor technologies, companies are able to set up production machines with these technologies at low costs.This paper presents a way to set up a distributed manufacturing control system by using common web technologies like RWD and embedded systems. We discuss advantages and drawbacks of web-based software solutions and show a methodical approach for the use in a modern production system. Finally, the functionality of the method is proven within an application example

    'Die Argumentation grenzt sich von der Eigenweltthese des Sports ab und gibt einen Überblick ĂŒber Funktionen, die verschiedenen Formen von Gymnastik, Turnen und Sport im modernen Staat und in der modernen Diktatur ĂŒbernehmen konnten. Theoretischer Hintergrund der Darstellung ist die Macht- und Subjekttheorie Michel Foucaults. In Beispielen aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts wird deutlich, dass sich staatliche Körpererziehung in preußisch-deutscher Tradition als 'Technologie der Macht' verstehen lĂ€sst, wĂ€hrend der britische Gentlemansport Merkmale einer 'Ästhetik der Existenz' aufweist. In den Diktaturen des 20. Jahrhunderts kam dem Sport als Machttechnologie eine zentrale Bedeutung zu, was am Beispiel des 'Sportlands' DDR aufgezeigt wird. Hier gab es aber ebenso Szenen, die ihren Sport nicht im Sinne des Staates betrieben, sondern vielmehr als Mittel einer 'Ästhetik der Existenz' betrachteten. Obwohl sie damit keine politischen Forderungen im engeren Sinne verbanden, lĂ€sst sich diese Praxis im Sozialismus als alltĂ€glicher, 'gelebter Widerstand' begreifen.' (Autorenreferat)'The article disapproves the theory of sport constituting an 'Eigenwelt' and points out the functions that gymnastics, exercise and sports fulfilled in modern society and especially under the conditions of a dictatorship. The argumentation follows Michel Foucault's theory of power and the subject. While in the 18th and 19th century the Prusso-German physical education can be regarded as a 'technology of power', the British gentleman's sports followed the concept of 'aesthetics of existence.' The dictatorships in the 20th century used sports as a central technology of exerting power, as for example the GDR. Yet there was also a milieu that refused to practice sport according to state ideology but insisted on these 'aesthetics of existence'. Although not directly opposing the state politically, this practice can be seen as a sort of resistance against socialism in daily life.' (author's abstract

    Semi-robotic 6 degree of freedom positioning for intracranial high precision radiotherapy; first phantom and clinical results

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To introduce a novel method of patient positioning for high precision intracranial radiotherapy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>An infrared(IR)-array, reproducibly attached to the patient via a vacuum-mouthpiece(vMP) and connected to the table via a 6 degree-of-freedom(DoF) mechanical arm serves as positioning and fixation system. After IR-based manual prepositioning to rough treatment position and fixation of the mechanical arm, a cone-beam CT(CBCT) is performed. A robotic 6 DoF treatment couch (HexaPODℱ) then automatically corrects all remaining translations and rotations. This absolute position of infrared markers at the first fraction acts as reference for the following fractions where patients are manually prepositioned to within ± 2 mm and ± 2° of this IR reference position prior to final HexaPOD-based correction; consequently CBCT imaging is only required once at the first treatment fraction.</p> <p>The preclinical feasibility and attainable repositioning accuracy of this method was evaluated on a phantom and human volunteers as was the clinical efficacy on 7 pilot study patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Phantom and volunteer manual IR-based prepositioning to within ± 2 mm and ± 2° in 6DoF was possible within a mean(± SD) of 90 ± 31 and 56 ± 22 seconds respectively. Mean phantom translational and rotational precision after 6 DoF corrections by the HexaPOD was 0.2 ± 0.2 mm and 0.7 ± 0.8° respectively. For the actual patient collective, the mean 3D vector for inter-treatment repositioning accuracy (n = 102) was 1.6 ± 0.8 mm while intra-fraction movement (n = 110) was 0.6 ± 0.4 mm.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This novel semi-automatic 6DoF IR-based system has been shown to compare favourably with existing non-invasive intracranial repeat fixation systems with respect to handling, reproducibility and, more importantly, intra-fraction rigidity. Some advantages are full cranial positioning flexibility for single and fractionated IGRT treatments and possibly increased patient comfort.</p
