Direct Observation of Interband Spin-Orbit Coupling in a Two-Dimensional Electron System
We report the direct observation of interband spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a
two-dimensional (2D) surface electron system, in addition to the anticipated
Rashba spin splitting. Using angle-resolved photoemission experiments and
first-principles calculations on Bi/Ag/Au heterostructures we show that the
effect strongly modifies the dispersion as well as the orbital and spin
character of the 2D electronic states, thus giving rise to considerable
deviations from the Rashba model. The strength of the interband SO coupling is
tuned by the thickness of the thin film structures
Temperature dependence of the Kondo resonance and its satellites in CeCu_2Si_2
We present high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy studies on the Kondo
resonance of the strongly-correlated Ce system CeCuSi. Exploiting the
thermal broadening of the Fermi edge we analyze position, spectral weight, and
temperature dependence of the low-energy 4f spectral features, whose major
weight lies above the Fermi level . We also present theoretical
predictions based on the single-impurity Anderson model using an extended
non-crossing approximation (NCA), including all spin-orbit and crystal field
splittings of the 4f states. The excellent agreement between theory and
experiment provides strong evidence that the spectral properties of
CeCuSi can be described by single-impurity Kondo physics down to K.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Electronic structure of YbB: Is it a Topological Insulator or not?
To resolve the controversial issue of the topological nature of the
electronic structure of YbB, we have made a combined study using density
functional theory (DFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
Accurate determination of the low energy band topology in DFT requires the use
of modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential incorporating the spin-orbit
coupling and the on-site Coulomb interaction of Yb electrons as large
as 7 eV. We have double-checked the DFT result with the more precise GW band
calculation. ARPES is done with the non-polar (110) surface termination to
avoid band bending and quantum well confinement that have confused ARPES
spectra taken on the polar (001) surface termination. Thereby we show
definitively that YbB has a topologically trivial B 2-Yb 5
semiconductor band gap, and hence is a non-Kondo non-topological insulator
(TI). In agreement with theory, ARPES shows pure divalency for Yb and a -
band gap of 0.3 eV, which clearly rules out both of the previous scenarios of
- band inversion Kondo TI and - band inversion non-Kondo TI. We
have also examined the pressure-dependent electronic structure of YbB,
and found that the high pressure phase is not a Kondo TI but a
\emph{p}-\emph{d} overlap semimetal.Comment: The main text is 6 pages with 4 figures, and the supplementary

Twisted exchange interaction between localized spins embedded in a one- or two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling
We study theoretically the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction
in one- and two-dimensions in presence of a Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We
show that rotation of the spin of conduction electrons due to SO coupling
causes a twisted RKKY interaction between localized spins which consists of
three different terms: Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, and Ising
interactions. We also show that the effective spin Hamiltonian reduces to the
usual RKKY interaction Hamiltonian in the twisted spin space where the spin
quantization axis of one localized spin is rotated.Comment: 4pages, no figur
Fully Gapped Single-Particle Excitations in the Lightly Doped Cuprates
The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by
angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the
entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This
effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates,
including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and
electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to
close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain
our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder, electronic
inhomogeneity, and a competing phase.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Spin-orbit splitting of image states
We quantify the effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the Rydberg-like
series of image state electrons at the (111) and (001) surface of Ir, Pt and
Au. Using relativistic multiple-scattering methods we find Rashba-like
dispersions with Delta E(K)=gamma K with values of gamma for n=1 states in the
range 38-88 meV Angstrom. Extending the phase-accumulation model to include
spin-orbit scattering we find that the splittings vary like 1/(n+a)^3 where a
is the quantum defect and that they are related to the probability of spin-flip
scattering at the surface. The splittings should be observable experimentally
being larger in magnitude than some exchange-splittings that have been resolved
by inverse photoemission, and are comparable to linewidths from inelastic

Interest of colchicine for the treatment of cystic fibrosis patients. Preliminary report.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease is characterized by persistent inflammation. Antiinflammatory drugs, such as corticosteroids and ibuprofen, have proved to slow the decline of pulmonary function although their use is limited because of frequent adverse events. We hypothesized that colchicine could be an alternative treatment because of its antiinflammatory properties and upregulatory effect on cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) closely related proteins. We herein present results obtained in an open study of eight CF children treated with colchicine for at least 6 months. Clinical status was better in all patients and respiratory function tests significantly improved in five. Median duration of antibiotherapy decreased significantly. These preliminary results support our hypothesis of a beneficial effect of colchicine in CF patients and stress the need for a controlled therapeutic trial
