Sturcture of the Goldstone Bosons
The feasibility of measuring the pion and kaon structure functions has been
investigated. A high luminosity electron-proton collider would make these
measurements feasible. Also, it appears feasible to measure these structure
functions in a nuclear medium. Simulations using the RAPGAP Monte Carlo of a
possible pion structure function measurement are presented.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the Second Workshop on Physics with

197_
This past year, two life-altering events descended on my life within a few months of each other: the death of my sister from cancer, and the birth of my first child. Both were anticipated, but hit me with a kind of emotional power that I couldnât have imagined until they actually happened. The extremes of the highs and lows these events brought induced a mental whiplash as I thought about what they meant, and how they would affect my family and me. Grief and celebration seldom inhabit the same place at once, but I found my-self living shoulder to shoulder with them both. I was feeling these emotions in all their intensity and poignancy, and simultaneously trying to place them all into rational categories that would help me make sense of a life that had ended, and a new one that had just begun.
My book entitled 197_ Is a metaphorical visualization of my struggle to reconcile the heartache of my sisterâs loss, the awe and wonder of meeting my daughter, the ache of living thousands of miles away from her, as well as the tension between the way these experiences felt to me, and what some of the philosophies I had studied told me they really meant. Through a sometimes discordant mix of cinematic images, personal vernacular photographs, and collage, I attempt to show my viewers what this struggle feels like, and in the sequence and structure of the book, I allow the viewer to participate in my search for meaning
TRADE POLICY, FOOD PRICE VARIABILITY, AND THE VULNERABILITY OF LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS
We utilize a global trade model to generate distributions of commodity and factor prices based on observed uncertainty in rice production. This is done for three trade policy regimes. We then assess their impact on domestic price variability and the likelihood of marginal households falling into poverty in four countries.Food Security and Poverty, International Relations/Trade,
Novel Multimodal Feedback Techniques for In-Car Mid-Air Gesture Interaction
This paper presents an investigation into the effects of different feedback modalities on mid-air gesture interaction for infotainment systems in cars. Car crashes and near-crash events are most commonly caused by driver distraction. Mid-air interaction is a way of reducing driver distraction by reducing visual demand from infotainment. Despite a range of available modalities, feedback in mid-air gesture systems is generally provided through visual displays. We conducted a simulated driving study to investigate how different types of multimodal feedback can support in-air gestures. The effects of different feedback modalities on eye gaze behaviour, and the driving and gesturing tasks are considered. We found that feedback modality influenced gesturing behaviour. However, drivers corrected falsely executed gestures more often in non-visual conditions. Our findings show that non-visual feedback can reduce visual distraction significantl
Bait Preference by the Argentine Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) In Haleakala National Park, Hawaii
The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr), has proven to be a threat to native arthropod species in Haleakala National Park, Maui, HI, and is also a potential threat to the park\u27s native flora. As it continues to expand its range, an effort has been undertaken to eradicate it, or at the least, control its spread. The 1st part of this effort focused on finding a bait carrier for subsequent toxicant-based control tests. A year-long bait preference test was implemented at each of the ant\u27s 2 infestation sites in Haleakala National Park, in which 6 solid baits and 2 liquid baits were assessed for attractiveness and feasibility for large scale control. At both sites, a toxicant-free formulation of Maxforce, a protein-based granular bait made from ground silkworm, Bombyx mori (L.), pupae, and a 25% sugar water solution were the most attractive baits. Ants took more Maxforce (without toxicant) and sugar water than all other baits, including honey granules and a fish protein bait. Sugar water, however, is difficult to distribute over large natural areas. Maxforce was therefore concluded to be the best bait carrier for toxicant-based control at Haleakala National Park because of its attractiveness and its ease for large scale broadcast dispersal
SHCal04 Southern Hemisphere Calibration, 0â11.0 cal kyr BP
Recent measurements on dendrochronologically-dated wood from the Southern Hemisphere have shown that there are differences between the structural form of the radiocarbon calibration curves from each hemisphere. Thus, it is desirable, when possible, to use calibration data obtained from secure dendrochronologically-dated wood from the corresponding hemisphere. In this paper, we outline the recent work and point the reader to the internationally recommended data set that should be used for future calibration of Southern Hemisphere ÂčâŽC dates
Spine-sheath jet model for low-luminosity AGNs
In several jetted AGNs, structured jets have been observed. In particular
spine-sheath configurations where the jet is radially divided into two or more
zones of different flow velocities. We present a model based on the particle
and radiation transport code CR-ENTREES. Here, interaction rates and secondary
particle and photon yields are pre-calculated by Monte Carlo event generators
or semi-analytical approximations. These are then used to create transition
matrices, that describe how each particle spectrum evolves with time. This code
allows for arbitrary injection of primary particles, and the possibility to
choose which interaction to include (photo-meson production, Bethe-Heitler
pair-production, inverse-Compton scattering, - pair production,
decay of all unstable particles, synchrotron radiation -- from electrons,
protons, and all relevant secondaries before their respective decays -- and
particle escape). In addition to the particle and radiation interactions taking
place in each homogeneous zone, we implement the feedback between the two zones
having different bulk velocities. The main mechanism at play when particles
cross the boundary between the two zones is shear acceleration. We follow a
microscopic description of this acceleration process to create a corresponding
transition matrix and include it in our numerical setup. Furthermore, each
zone's radiation field can be used as an external target photon field for the
other zone's particle interactions. We present here the first results of the
effect of a two-zone spine-sheath jet, by applying this model to typical
low-luminosity AGNs.Comment: PoS 444 (38th ICRC) 958 (accepted
