What New Writing Teachers Talk About When They Talk About Teaching
As a discipline with academic roots in pedagogy (Harris 1996), composition studies has fostered increasingly visible and structured programs to mentor new writing instructors. Several recent essay collections compile examples of programs, thoughtfully theorized approaches, and careful explorations of how to best support and nurture new instructors of first-year writing (see, for example, Pytlik and Liggett 2002; Ward and Perry 2002). It is now common that new college writing teaching assistants (TAs) participate in at least one pedagogy seminar designed to guide them through their initial teaching experience and provide an introduction to composition studies (see Dobrin 2005). Additionally, individual accounts of new instructors like those by Wendy Bishop (1990), Elizabeth Rankin (1994), and Sally Barr Ebest (2005) help provide a rich context for further research on the pedagogical development of new writing instructors
The Effects of Writing Pedagogy Education on Graduate Teaching Assistants’ Approaches to Teaching Composition
The authors report the initial results from a three-year, two-site, multimodal study of the relationship between formal pedagogy education and teaching practices for graduate teaching assistants (TAs) in first-year writing. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of data from 88 multiple-choice and short-answer surveys and 41 semi-structured interviews demonstrates uneven integration of key composition pedagogy principles into TAs’ views of teaching writing; additional analysis reveals very few differences between first- and beyond-first-year TAs or between TAs at the two sites. The authors recommend that on a national level, TA writing pedagogy education be routinely and robustly extended into at least the second and third years of new teachers’ work in composition programs. In addition, the authors recommend that writing pedagogy education focus on reflective practice and problem solving to help TAs integrate pedagogical strategies more thoroughly into their principles and practices

Management of the airway and lung isolation for thoracic surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic
Intra-operative aerosol generating procedures are arguably unavoidable in the routine provision of thoracic anaesthesia. Airway management for such patients during the COVID-19 pandemic including tracheal intubation, lung isolation, one-lung ventilation and flexible bronchoscopy may pose a significant risk to healthcare professionals and patients. That said, there remains a need for timely thoracic surgery for patients with lung cancer or thoracic trauma. The thoracic anaesthetic community has been confronted with the need to modify existing techniques to maximise safety for patients and healthcare professionals. With appropriate modification, aerosol generation may be mitigated against in most circumstances. We developed a set of practice-based recommendations for airway management in thoracic surgical patients, which have been endorsed by the Association for Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care and the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland

Evidence of Differential Effects of Vitamin D Receptor Variants on Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Risk by Predicted Vitamin D Status
Introduction: Experimental studies suggest vitamin D inhibits ovarian carcinogenesis. Yet, epidemiologic studies of ovarian cancer risk and lifestyle correlates of vitamin D status, plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], or vitamin D receptor (VDR) variants have been inconsistent. Objective: To evaluate VDR genetic associations by high vs. low predicted 25(OH)D, scores derived from known determinants of plasma 25(OH)D. To assess ovarian cancer associations with variants identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of plasma 25(OH)D. Methods: We genotyped up to seven VDR and eight 25(OH)D GWAS variants in the Nurses’ Health Studies (562 cases, 1,553 controls) and New England Case–Control study (1,821 cases, 1,870 controls). We estimated haplotype scores using expectation-maximization-based algorithms. We used unconditional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We combined study results using DerSimonian and Laird meta-analysis. Results: Ovarian cancer risk increased per A allele of rs7975232 (VDR; OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.01–1.25) among all women. When stratified by predicted 25(OH)D, ovarian cancer was associated with rs731236 (VDR; per C allele OR = 1.31) and rs7975232 (OR = 1.38) among women with high predicted 25(OH)D, but not among women with low levels (P ≤ 0.009). We also observed heterogeneity by predicted 25(OH)D for the ovarian cancer association with VDR 3′ end haplotypes (P = 0.009). Of 25(OH)D-associated GWAS loci, rs7041 was associated with reduced ovarian cancer risk (per T allele OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.85-0.99), which did not differ by predicted 25(OH)D status. Conclusion: Our study suggests an influence of VDR 3′ end variants on ovarian cancer risk may be observed in women with high predicted 25(OH)D, which remained even after taking multiple comparisons into consideration. Future studies are needed to confirm our results and explore further the relation between vitamin D exposure, genetic variants, and ovarian cancer risk
Ultracool Field Brown Dwarf Candidates Selected at 4.5 microns
We have identified a sample of cool field brown dwarf candidates using IRAC
data from the Spitzer Deep, Wide-Field Survey (SDWFS). The candidates were
selected from 400,000 SDWFS sources with [4.5] <= 18.5 mag and required to have
[3.6]-[4.5] >= 1.5 and [4.5] - [8.0] <= 2.0 on the Vega system. The first color
requirement selects objects redder than all but a handful of presently known
brown dwarfs with spectral classes later than T7, while the second eliminates
14 probable reddened AGN. Optical detection of 4 of the remaining 18 sources
implies they are likely also AGN, leaving 14 brown dwarf candidates. For two of
the brightest candidates (SDWFS J143524.44+335334.6 and SDWFS
J143222.82+323746.5), the spectral energy distributions including near-infrared
detections suggest a spectral class of ~ T8. The proper motion is < 0.25 "/yr,
consistent with expectations for a luminosity inferred distance of >70 pc. The
reddest brown dwarf candidate (SDWFS J143356.62+351849.2) has [3.6] -
[4.5]=2.24 and H - [4.5] > 5.7, redder than any published brown dwarf in these
colors, and may be the first example of the elusive Y-dwarf spectral class.
Models from Burrows et al. (2003) predict larger numbers of cool brown dwarfs
should be found for a Chabrier (2003) mass function. Suppressing the model
[4.5] flux by a factor of two, as indicated by previous work, brings the
Burrows models and observations into reasonable agreement. The recently
launched Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) will probe a volume ~40x
larger and should find hundreds of brown dwarfs cooler than T7.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the June 2010 issue
