A Parametric Study of Tillage Effects on Radar Backscatter

    Get PDF
Radar backscatter data for different field configurations and modulation function curves for angular and frequency variations are presented. A simplistic approach to modeling this effect is presented. It is concluded that: (1) row direction is a significant contributor to radar backscatter from cropland and must be considered when making radar measurements over bare or sparsely vegetated fields; (2) while the effect decrease with increasing frequency, it is still large (5 dB) at 13.3 GHz; (3) row effects are independent of linear polarization; (4) there is a strong aspect angle sensitivity which is a function of the scene and radar system parameters

Digital adaptive control of a VTOL aircraft

    Get PDF
A technique has been developed for calculating feedback and feedforward gain matrices that stabilize a VTOL aircraft while enabling it to track input commands of forward and vertical velocity. Leverrier's algorithm is used in a procedure for determining a set of state variable, feedback gains that force the closed loop poles and zeroes of one pilot input transfer function to be at preselected positions in the s plane. This set of feedback gains is then used to calculate the feedback and feedforward gains for the velocity command controller. The method is computationally attractive since the gains are determined by solving systems of linear, simultaneous equations. Responses obtained using a digital simulation of the longitudinal dynamics of the CH-47 helicopter are presented

Near- to mid-infrared picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO4

    Get PDF
We describe a Ti:sapphire-pumped picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO4 that is broadly tunable in the near to mid infrared. A 4.5-mm single-grating crystal at room temperature in combination with pump wavelength tuning provided access to a continuous-tuning range from 3.35 to 5 mu m, and a pump power threshold of 90 mW was measured. Average mid-infrared output powers in excess of 100 mW and total output powers of 400 mW in similar to 1-ps pulses were obtained at 33% extraction efficiency. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.</p

Symmetries of Differential Equations via Cartan's Method of Equivalence

We formulate a method of computing invariant 1-forms and structure equations of symmetry pseudo-groups of differential equations based on Cartan's method of equivalence and the moving coframe method introduced by Fels and Olver. Our apparoach does not require a preliminary computation of infinitesimal defining systems, their analysis and integration, and uses differentiation and linear algebra operations only. Examples of its applications are given.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX 2.0
