    High pressure effects in fluorinated HgBa2Ca2Cu3O(8+d)

    We have measured the pressure sensitivity of Tc in fluorinated HgBa2Ca2Cu3O(8+d) (Hg-1223) ceramic samples with different F contents, applying pressures up to 30 GPa. We obtained that Tc increases with increasing pressure, reaching different maximum values, depending on the F doping level, and decreases for a further increase of pressure. A new high Tc record (166 K +/- 1 K) was achieved by applying pressure (23 GPa) in a fluorinated Hg-1223 sample near the optimum doping level. Our results show that all our samples are at the optimal doping, and that fluorine incorporation decreases the crystallographic aa-parameter concomitantly increasing the maximum attainable Tc. This effect reveals that the compression of the aa axes is one of the keys that controls the Tc of high temperature superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Electrical resistivity of the Ti4O7 Magneli phase under high pressure

    We have measured resistivity as a function of temperature and pressure of Ti4O7 twinned crystals using different contact configurations. Pressures over 4kbar depress the localization of bipolarons and allow the study of the electrical conduction of the bipolaronic phase down to low temperatures. For pressures P > 40 kbar the bipolaron formation transition is suppressed and a nearly pressure independent behavior is obtained for the resistivity. We observed an anisotropic conduction. When current is injected parallel to the principal axis, a metallic conduction with interacting carrier effects is predominant. A superconducting state was not obtained down to 1.2 K, although evidences of the proximity of a quantum critical point were noticed. While when current is injected non-parallel to the crystal's principal axis, we obtained a logarithmic divergence of the resistivity at low temperatures.     Kondo Screening and Magnetic Ordering in Frustrated UNi4B

    UNi4B exhibits unusual properties and, in particular, a unique antiferromagnetic arrangement involving only 2/3 of the U sites. Based on the low temperature behavior of this compound, we propose that the remaining 1/3 U sites are nonmagnetic due to the Kondo effect. We derive a model in which the coexistence of magnetic and nonmagnetic U sites is the consequence of the competition between frustration of the crystallographic structure and instability of the 5f moments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Pressure effects in the triangular layered cobaltites NaxCoO2

    We have measured transport properties as a function of temperature and pressure up to 30GPa in the NaxCoO2 system. For the x=0.5 sample the transition temperature at 53K increases with pressure, while paradoxically the sample passes from an insulating to a metallic ground state. A similar transition is observed in the x=0.31 sample under pressure. Compression on the x=0.75 sample transforms the sample from a metallic to an insulating state. We discuss our results in terms of interactions between band structure effects and Na+ order.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Mott-Hubbard quantum criticality in paramagnetic CMR pyrochlores

    We present a correlated {\it ab initio} description of the paramagnetic phase of Tl2_2Mn2_2O7_7, employing a combined local density approximation (LDA) with multiorbital dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) treatment. We show that the insulating state observed in this colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) pyrochlore is determined by strong Mn intra- and inter-orbital local electron-electron interactions. Hybridization effects are reinforced by the correlation-induced spectral weight transfer. Our result coincides with optical conductivity measurements, whose low energy features are remarkably accounted for by our theory. Based on this agreement, we study the disorder-driven insulator-metal transition of doped compounds, showing the proximity of Tl2_2Mn2_2O7_7 to quantum phase transitions, in agreement with recent measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The present investigation examines changes in students' homework engagement and motivation as they advance to higher grade levels in Spanish compulsory education. The study takes into account the possible effect of prior academic achievement on students' homework engagement and motivation. Participants included 1257 students (ranging in age from 9 to 16 years) from four regions in northern Spain.     Using Taxes to Manage a Multigear Fishery: An Application to a Spanish Fishery

    When fishing gears alter the composition of fish populations or modify the recruitment rate, it is advisable to include the degree of their fishing selectivity in the analysis. Fishing selectivity can cause two different management problems: interspecies selectivity or by‐catch of fish stocks for which no quota has been set by the regulator. The case study is the Spanish fishery of hake (Merlucius merlucius), where the fleet operates using two main gears; most of the vessels are trawlers but a few boats use longlines and other fixed gears. Fishery management by means of effort taxes and how the degree of intraspecies selectivity may affect the resource and tax levels are analyzed. The results show that the tax level will depend on the social value of the marine stock, the marginal productivity of each fleet\u27s effort, and the effect that the fishing activity of each one has on the growth of the hake biomass

    Evidence for polarons in iron pnictides of the Ln-1111 and AE-122 families

    Examination of the electrical resistivities of iron pnictides shows that they can be accounted by conduction by polarons. Their activation energies show a linear behaviour with the critical temperatures of the spin density waves (SDW), T*, as both vary with pressure. The slope matches the ratio SDW gap to T*, while the intercept can be related to the transition temperature of the lattice distortion, T0. An adapted Landau free energy predicts the observed order of the transitions, according to which is higher, T* or T0.     Controlling A<sub>x</sub>Mn[Fe(CN)<sub>6</sub>] charge transfer pathways through tilt-engineering for enhanced metal-to-metal interactions

    The induction of structural distortion in a controlled manner through tilt engineering has emerged as a potent method to finely tune the physical characteristics of Prussian blue analogues. Notably, this distortion can be chemically induced by filling their pores with cations that can interact with the cyanide ligands. With this objective in mind, we optimized the synthetic protocol to produce the stimuli-responsive Prussian blue analogue AxMn[Fe(CN)6] with A = K+, Rb+, and Cs+, to tune its stimuli-responsive behavior by exchanging the cation inside pores. Our crystallographic analyses reveal that the smaller the cation, the more pronounced the structural distortion, with a notable 20-degree Fe–CN tilting when filling the cavities with K+, 10 degrees with Rb+, and 2 degrees with Cs+. Moreover, this controlled distortion offers a means to switch on/off its stimuli-responsive behavior, while modifying its magnetic response.
