AbstractThe palatine hyperplasia caused by suction chamber or the palatine inflammatory hyperplasia is associated to suction chambers confectioned on totally prosthesis, been present in 1% to 11% of all the patients that ware this type of prosthesis. The diagnosis is done by the clinical exam, with a higher incidence in individuals living during the 5th and 6th decade of live and wearing the same apparatus more than 15 years. It is presented the treatment of a suction chamber palatine hyperplasia in a patient wearing the same prosthesis for more than 15 years, with good result

    Giant tongue lipoma

    Get PDF
Lipomas are the most common soft tissue mesenchymal neoplasms are uncommon in the oral and maxillofacial region. Oral lipomas usually exhibit slow asymptomatic growth and are less than 20 mm at their largest diameter. A 71-year-old man was referred to our regional oral and maxillofacial department by a dentist after noticing an asymptomatic tongue swelling. Examination and further radiographic and histological investigations revealed a large tongue lipoma which had been present for over three years. Initially it was decided to keep this benign lesion under review. However its relatively rapid growth over the next six months started to affect his speech, eating and airway and was subsequently removed surgically under general anaesthetic. This unusual case report documents the presentation, diagnostic considerations and treatment of this lipoma. It also highlights the important role clinicians have in detecting and investigating or referring any abnormal pathology. Keywords: Lipoma, Tongue, Diagnosis, Histopathology, Treatmen

Central odontogenic fibroma: a case report

    Get PDF
Central odontogenic fibroma is a rare odontogenic neoplasm that originates from odontogenic ectomesenchyme. Here, a case of central odontogenic fibroma in a 17-year-old male is reported. Since the present case showed a multilocular radiolucency with partially ill-defined border between the right mandibular condyle and the distal root of the right mandibular third molar, differential diagnosis involved a wide range of pathosis from benign lesions like ameoloblastic fibroma and odontogenic myxoma to more aggressive lesions such as desmoplastic fibroma, juvenile aggressive fibromatosis, or fibrosarcoma

Morphologic effects of hypervitaminosis a on rat submandibular gland

Young male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed oral supplements of vitamin A; either a subtoxic dose of 5000 i.u./day for 16 weeks (10 animals), or a toxic dose of 15,000 i.u./day for 16 days (5 animals). High-dose animals exhibited signs of acute toxicity; low-dose animals demonstrated only less weight gain than controls. Vitamin A sera and liver levels evidenced intoxication. Light and electron microscopy were conducted upon acini, intercalated ducts, and striated-granular ducts of the submandibular gland. Acinar cells evidenced rough endoplasmic reticulum clefting and hyperplasia of both rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus similar to changes produced by pilocarpine or isoproterenol and interpreted as hyperactivity. Also increased were the number of degenerating acinar cells. Striated-granular duct cells were similar to controls except for increased cellular degeneration. Intercalated ducts appeared unaffected. Abnormalities were more pronounced in short-term, toxic hypervitaminosis A than long-term, subtoxic hypervitaminosis A.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/34016/1/0000291.pd

Clinical Features and Differential Diagnoses in Laryngeal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

    Get PDF
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of salivary glands. However, it is a rare entity in larynx. Laryngeal cases are frequently misdiagnosed with other malignancies and they are under-reported. So, recognizing the clinical and histological features of this tumor is essential. Laryngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma can arise in supraglottis, glottis and subglottis. Generally, it presents as a submucosal mass; therefore, progressive symptoms without any identifiable lesion in laryngoscopy must be well considered. The prognosis is somehow dependent on the histological features. In high-grade tumors, recurrence is more common and radical surgery with radiotherapy is recommended. In this paper, we provide a thorough literature review on mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the larynx. The most important distinguishing features of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and its two major differential diagnoses (squamous cell carcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma) are clearly stated and pitfalls in true diagnosis of this tumor are discussed
