Analysis of pressure distortion testing
The development of a distortion methodology, method D, was documented, and its application to steady state and unsteady data was demonstrated. Three methodologies based upon DIDENT, a NASA-LeRC distortion methodology based upon the parallel compressor model, were investigated by applying them to a set of steady state data. The best formulation was then applied to an independent data set. The good correlation achieved with this data set showed that method E, one of the above methodologies, is a viable concept. Unsteady data were analyzed by using the method E methodology. This analysis pointed out that the method E sensitivities are functions of pressure defect level as well as corrected speed and pattern
Improving supply and phosphorous use efficiency in organic farming systems
Phosphorus (P) is an essential plant nutrient that needs to be managed carefully in organic systems so that crop yield and quality remain sustainable without contributing to environmental damage, particularly that associated with eutrophication. Under organic regulations, minimally processed rock phosphate (PR) can be used to amend low P fertility soils, although the solubility is extremely low at optimum soil pH for most crop growth (pH 6.5). This paper describes a project (PLINK) which aims to develop methods of improving P efficiency on organic farms, although the same approaches may also be applicable on conventional and low-input farms. The methodologies that the project is developing include the fermentation and composting of crop waste material with PR in order to solubilise P and make it more available to the crop. Some initial results are described here. In addition, the project will investigate the alteration of the rotation to include crops or varieties with high P uptake efficiency, or roots that possess acidifying properties which improve P availability for following crops
Are the hosts of VLBI selected radio-AGN different to those of radio-loud AGN?
Recent studies have found that radio-AGN selected by radio-loudness show
little difference in terms of their host galaxy properties when compared to
non-AGN galaxies of similar stellar mass and redshift. Using new 1.4~GHz VLBI
observations of the COSMOS field we find that approximately 49\% of
high-mass (M 10 M), high luminosity (L
10 W~Hz) radio-AGN possess a VLBI detected counterpart. These
objects show no discernible bias towards specific stellar masses, redshifts or
host properties other than what is shown by the radio-AGN population in
general. Radio-AGN that are detected in VLBI observations are not special, but
form a representative sample of the radio-loud AGN population.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, lette
Radiation Front Sweeping the Ambient Medium of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are emitted by relativistic ejecta from powerful
cosmic explosions. Their light curves suggest that the gamma-ray emission
occurs at early stages of the ejecta expansion, well before it decelerates in
the ambient medium. If so, the launched gamma-ray front must overtake the
ejecta and sweep the ambient medium outward. As a result a gap is opened
between the ejecta and the medium that surfs the radiation front ahead.
Effectively, the ejecta moves in a cavity until it reaches a radius
R_{gap}=10^{16}E_{54}^{1/2} cm where E is the isotropic energy of the GRB. At
R=R_{gap} the gap is closed, a blast wave forms and collects the medium swept
by radiation. Further development of the blast wave is strongly affected by the
leading radiation front: the front plays the role of a precursor where the
medium is loaded with e+- pairs and preaccelerated just ahead of the blast. It
impacts the emission from the blast at R < R_{load}=5R_{gap} (the early
afterglow). A spectacular observational effect results: GRB afterglows should
start in optical/UV and evolve fast (< min) to a normal X-ray afterglow. The
early optical emission observed in GRB 990123 may be explained in this way. The
impact of the front is especially strong if the ambient medium is a wind from a
massive progenitor of the GRB. In this case three phenomena are predicted: (1)
The ejecta decelerates at R<R_{load} producing a lot of soft radiation. (2) The
light curve of soft emission peaks at
t_{peak}=40(1+z)E_{54}^{1/2}(Gamma_{ej}/100)^{-2} s where Gamma_{ej} is the
Lorentz factor of the ejecta. Given measured redshift z and t_{peak}, one finds
Gamma_{ej}. (3) The GRB acquires a spectral break at 5 - 50 MeV because harder
photons are absorbed by radiation scattered in the wind.Comment: 20 pages, accepted to Ap
Modeling the Void H I Column Density Spectrum
The equivalent width distribution function (EWDF) of \hone absorbers specific
to the void environment has been recently derived (Manning 2002), revealing a
large line density of clouds (dN/dz ~500 per unit z for Log (N_HI)> 12.4). I
show that the void absorbers cannot be diffuse (or so-called filamentary)
clouds, expanding with the Hubble flow, as suggested by N-body/hydro
simulations. Absorbers are here modeled as the baryonic remnants of
sub-galactic perturbations that have expanded away from their dark halos in
response to reionization at z ~ 6.5. A 1-D Lagrangian hydro/gravity code is
used to follow the dynamic evolution and ionization structure of the baryonic
clouds for a range of halo circular velocities. The simulation products at z=0
can be combined according to various models of the halo velocity distribution
function to form a column density spectrum that can be compared with the
observed. I find that such clouds may explain the observed EWDF if the halo
velocity distribution function is as steep as that advanced by Klypin (1999),
and the halo mass distribution is closer to isothermal than to NFW.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures. Paper in press; ApJ 591, n

Topological regluing of rational functions
Regluing is a topological operation that helps to construct topological
models for rational functions on the boundaries of certain hyperbolic
components. It also has a holomorphic interpretation, with the flavor of
infinite dimensional Thurston--Teichm\"uller theory. We will discuss a
topological theory of regluing, and trace a direction in which a holomorphic

Tumour rejection in rats sensitized to embryonic tissue. I. Rejection of tumour cells implanted s.c. and detection of cytotoxic lymphoid cells.
Wistar rats were sensitized to rat embryonic tissue by immunization with irradiated (5000 rad) rat embryo cells (2 X 10(6) s.c. + 1 X 10(6) i.p.) derived from embryos aged 14-15 days, or by implantation of irradiated (5000 rad) tissue grafts from these embryos. Three to five immunizations were given at weekly intervals, and the rats were then challenged subcutaneously 7-10 days after the final inoculum with minimal tumour-producing tumour cell doses. Immunization with irradiated rat embryo cells failed to influence the growth and development of tumour cells prepared from hepatoma D23 and D30, sarcoma Mc57, mammary carcinoma AAF57 or cells prepared from spontaneously arising mammary carcinomata Sp4 and Sp15. Using adoptive transfer techniques, lymphoid cells from embryo-sensitized rats, when used in a 3000 : 1 ratio (lymphoid cells : tumour cells), were shown effectively to retard the growth of hepatoma D23 in 3 out of 7 experiments performed. Similar adoptive transfer procedures proved ineffective in preventing the growth of mammary carcinoma AAF57. Using in vitro cytotoxicity tests, lymph node cells and spleen cells from embryo-immunized rats were shown to be cytotoxic for several rat tumour cell targets : hepatoma D23 (7/10 tests), sarcoma Mc7 (8/12 tests), mammary carcinoma AAF57 (2/2 tests) and Sp4 (3/4 tests), and for 14-15-day-old rat embryo cells (5/10 tests). In comparative tests lymphoid cells were relatively non-cytotoxic for 20-day-old rat embryo cells (1/6 tests) or cells prepared from adult rat lung or kidney (1/10 tests).
