    Development of Aluminum LEKIDs for Balloon-Borne Far-IR Spectroscopy

    We are developing lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) designed to achieve background-limited sensitivity for far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy on a stratospheric balloon. The Spectroscopic Terahertz Airborne Receiver for Far-InfraRed Exploration (STARFIRE) will study the evolution of dusty galaxies with observations of the [CII] 158 μ\mum and other atomic fine-structure transitions at z=0.5−1.5z=0.5-1.5, both through direct observations of individual luminous infrared galaxies, and in blind surveys using the technique of line intensity mapping. The spectrometer will require large format (∼\sim1800 detectors) arrays of dual-polarization sensitive detectors with NEPs of 1×10−171 \times 10^{-17} W Hz−1/2^{-1/2}. The low-volume LEKIDs are fabricated with a single layer of aluminum (20 nm thick) deposited on a crystalline silicon wafer, with resonance frequencies of 100−250100-250 MHz. The inductor is a single meander with a linewidth of 0.4 μ\mum, patterned in a grid to absorb optical power in both polarizations. The meander is coupled to a circular waveguide, fed by a conical feedhorn. Initial testing of a small array prototype has demonstrated good yield, and a median NEP of 4×10−184 \times 10^{-18} W Hz−1/2^{-1/2}.Comment: accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physic

The protocol is specified in terms of the following: measurement equipment, signal processing requirements, human postural requirements, test rig, sensor placement, sensor dermal fixation, and test procedure. Preliminary tests of the statistical nature of rectus femoris MMG signals were performed, and Gaussianity was evaluated by means of a two-sided Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. For all 100 MMG data sets obtained from the testing of two volunteers, the null hypothesis of Gaussianity was rejected at the 1%, 5%, and 10% significance levels. Most skewness values were found to be greater than 0.0, while all kurtosis values were found to be greater than 3.0. A statistical convergence analysis also performed on the same 100 MMG data sets suggested that 25 MMG acquisitions should prove sufficient to statistically characterize rectus femoris MMG. This conclusion is supported by the qualitative characteristics of the mean rectus femoris MMG power spectral densities obtained using 25 averages

    Actin crosslinker competition and sorting drive emergent GUV size-dependent actin network architecture

    The proteins that make up the actin cytoskeleton can self-assemble into a variety of structures. In vitro experiments and coarse-grained simulations have shown that the actin crosslinking proteins α-actinin and fascin segregate into distinct domains in single actin bundles with a molecular size-dependent competition-based mechanism. Here, by encapsulating actin, α-actinin, and fascin in giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs), we show that physical confinement can cause these proteins to form much more complex structures, including rings and asters at GUV peripheries and centers; the prevalence of different structures depends on GUV size. Strikingly, we found that α-actinin and fascin self-sort into separate domains in the aster structures with actin bundles whose apparent stiffness depends on the ratio of the relative concentrations of α-actinin and fascin. The observed boundary-imposed effect on protein sorting may be a general mechanism for creating emergent structures in biopolymer networks with multiple crosslinkers

    Optimisation of variables for studying dilepton transverse momentum distributions at hadron colliders

    In future measurements of the dilepton (Z/γ∗Z/\gamma^*) transverse momentum, \Qt, at both the Tevatron and LHC, the achievable bin widths and the ultimate precision of the measurements will be limited by experimental resolution rather than by the available event statistics. In a recent paper the variable \at, which corresponds to the component of \Qt\ that is transverse to the dilepton thrust axis, has been studied in this regard. In the region, \Qt\ << 30 GeV, \at\ has been shown to be less susceptible to experimental resolution and efficiency effects than the \Qt. Extending over all \Qt, we now demonstrate that dividing \at\ (or \Qt) by the measured dilepton invariant mass further improves the resolution. In addition, we propose a new variable, \phistarEta, that is determined exclusively from the measured lepton directions; this is even more precisely determined experimentally than the above variables and is similarly sensitive to the \Qt. The greater precision achievable using such variables will enable more stringent tests of QCD and tighter constraints on Monte Carlo event generator tunes.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 table

    Hostility, Race, and Glucose Metabolism in Nondiabetic Individuals

    OBJECTIVE— The present study was designed to determine whether hostility is differentially related to measures of glucose metabolism in African-Americans and Caucasians. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS— The relationship of hostility, as measured by a subset of the Cook-Medley hostility scale (CMHOST) inventory items, to various parameters of glucose metabolism were examined in a young, healthy sample of male and female African-American and Caucasian volunteers. Fasting blood samples were collected during an inpatient admission, at which time the CMHOST was also administered. RESULTS— In the entire sample, the CMHOST was found to be significantly correlated with fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity, as measured by the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). However, the relationship of hostility to these parameters of glucose metabolism was different in African-American and Caucasian subjects. Hostility was significantly related to fasting glucose in African-Americans and to insulin sensitivity and fasting insulin in Caucasian subjects. The relationship of hostility to insulin sensitivity and fasting insulin was partially dependent on BMI in Caucasians, but the relationship of hostility to fasting glucose was unrelated to BMI in African-Americans. CONCLUSIONS— Our data suggest that the relationship of hostility to measures of glucose metabolism is mediated differently in these two ethnic groups. Therefore, hostility seems to be part of a constellation of risk-related behaviors related to BMI in Caucasians but independently related to fasting glucose in African-Americans

    Ursodeoxycholic acid to reduce adverse perinatal outcomes for intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: the PITCHES RCT

    Background: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, characterised by maternal pruritus and raised serum bile acid concentrations, is associated with increased rates of stillbirth, preterm birth and neonatal unit admission. Ursodeoxycholic acid is widely used as a treatment, but without an adequate evidence base. / Objective: We aimed to evaluate whether or not ursodeoxycholic acid reduces adverse perinatal outcomes in affected women. / Design: Multicentre, masked, randomised, placebo-controlled, two-arm, parallel-group trial. / Setting: Thirty-three UK maternity units. / Participants: Women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy aged ≥ 18 years, between 20+0 and 40+6 weeks’ gestation with a singleton or twin pregnancy and no known lethal fetal anomaly. / Interventions: Women were randomly assigned (1 : 1 allocation ratio) to take ursodeoxycholic acid tablets or matched placebo tablets, at an equivalent dose of 1000 mg daily, titrated as needed. / Main outcome measures: The primary outcome was a composite of perinatal death (in utero fetal death after randomisation or known neonatal death up to 7 days) or preterm delivery (< 37 weeks’ gestation) or neonatal unit admission for at least 4 hours (from birth until hospital discharge). Each infant was counted once within this composite. Analyses were by intention to treat. / Results: Between 23 December 2015 and 7 August 2018, 605 women were randomised, with 305 women allocated to the ursodeoxycholic acid arm and 300 women to the placebo arm. There was no evidence of a significant difference in the incidence of the primary outcome between the groups: 23.0% (74 out of 322 infants) in the ursodeoxycholic acid group compared with 26.7% (85 out of 318 infants) in the placebo group; adjusted risk ratio 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.62 to 1.15). There was no evidence of a significant difference in total costs (maternal, infant and the cost of ursodeoxycholic acid) between the two trial groups. There were two serious adverse events in the ursodeoxycholic acid group and six in the placebo group. / Limitations: Limitations include a primary outcome event rate in the control group that was lower than that estimated for the sample size calculation, but the lack of evidence of effect in all analyses suggests that it is unlikely that the trial had insufficient power. / Conclusions: In this clinical trial of ursodeoxycholic acid in women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, there is no evidence that it is effective in reducing a composite of adverse perinatal outcomes. / Future work: Future research should aim to elucidate the aetiology and pathophysiology of adverse perinatal outcomes, particularly stillbirth, in women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy to assist the development of an effective preventative treatment. Further exploratory analyses may identify groups of women who might respond to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment. / Trial registration: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN91918806. / Funding: This project was funded by the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme, a Medical Research Council and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) partnership.     Genotype, Childhood Maltreatment, and Their Interaction in the Etiology of Adult Antisocial Behaviors

    BACKGROUND: Maltreatment by an adult or caregiver during childhood is a prevalent and important predictor of antisocial behaviors in adulthood. A functional promoter polymorphism in the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene has been implicated as a moderating factor in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and antisocial behaviors. Although there have been numerous attempts at replicating this observation, results remain inconclusive. METHODS: We examined this gene-environment interaction hypothesis in a sample of 3356 white and 960 black men (aged 24-34) participating in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. RESULTS: Primary analysis indicated that childhood maltreatment was a significant risk factor for later behaviors that violate rules and the rights of others (p .05). Power analyses indicated that these results were not due to insufficient statistical power. CONCLUSIONS: We could not confirm the hypothesis that MAOA genotype moderates the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult antisocial behaviors

    The design and characterization of a 300 channel, optimized full-band millimeter filterbank for science with SuperSpec

    SuperSpec is an integrated, on-chip spectrometer for millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy. We report the approach, design optimization, and partial characterization of a 300 channel filterbank covering the 185 to 315 GHz frequency band that targets a resolving power R ~ 310, and fits on a 3.5×5.5 cm chip. SuperSpec uses a lens and broadband antenna to couple radiation into a niobium microstrip that feeds a bank of niobium microstrip half-wave resonators for frequency selectivity. Each half-wave resonator is coupled to the inductor of a titanium nitride lumped-element kinetic inductance detector (LEKID) that detects the incident radiation. The device was designed for use in a demonstration instrument at the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT)
