    Intoxication due to pesticides in the Federal District of Brazil between 2004 and 2007 : analysis of notification to the Toxicological Information and Assistance Center

    A exposição humana a substâncias tóxicas, incluindo agrotóxicos, pode levar a danos irreversíveis no organismo e até ao óbito, sendo considera um grave problema de saúde pública. Este é um estudo retrospectivo, que utilizou dados reportados ao Centro de Informação e Assistência Toxicológica do Distrito Federal, Brasil (Ciat-DF) referentes a intoxicações por agrotóxicos ocorridas no DF de 2004 a 2007. Nesse período, 709 intoxicações foram notificadas e avaliadas neste estudo. A maioria dos indivíduos envolvidos nas intoxicações foi do sexo masculino (51,2%), intoxicados no domicílio (91%), em área urbana (86,3%) e por via oral (84%). Crianças de 1 a 4 anos e adultos de 20 a 39 anos estiveram envolvidos em 30 e 36% das intoxicações, respectivamente. As intoxicações acidentais corresponderam a 47,1% dos casos, seguidas pelas tentativas de suicídio (44,2%). O raticida ilegal chumbinho, conhecido por conter, principalmente, o inseticida carbamato aldicarbe, esteve envolvido em 35,1% dos casos, principalmente em tentativas de suicídio. Dezoito das intoxicações registradas evoluíram a óbito, 15 por suicídio e 3 por acidente individual. Quando comparado com outras fontes de dados, este estudo detectou uma alta taxa de subnotificação das intoxicações por agrotóxicos reportadas ao Ciat-DF no período do estudo.Exposure to toxic substances, including pesticides, can cause irreversible damage to humans, including death, and is therefore considered a serious public health problem worldwide. This is a retrospective study using data gathered by the Toxicological Information and Assistance Center of Brazil's Federal District (Ciat-DF) between 2004 and 2007. During this period, 709 intoxications with pesticide occurred in the DF and were analyzed in this study. Fifty-one percent of the intoxicated individuals were men; the events occurred mostly in the home (91%), in the urban area (86.3%) and by ingestion (84%). Children from 1 to 4 years of age and adults from 20 to 39 years were involved in 30% and 36% of the cases, respectively. Accidental intoxication corresponded to 47.1% of the cases, followed by attempted suicide (44.2%). The illegal rodenticide known as "chumbinho", the main ingredient of which is carbamate insecticide aldicarb, was involved in 35.1% of the cases, mostly in suicide attempts. In eighteen cases, the intoxicated individuals died after exposure to the pesticides, namely 15 suicides and 3 accidental poisonings. When compared with other data sources, this study identified a high level of underreporting to the Ciat-DF of intoxication by pesticide during the period under study

    Ecological risk assessment is a process evaluating the likelihood that adverse ecological effects may occur or are occurring as a result of exposure to one or more substances. Relevant information needed to predict risks from pesticides includes their physical chemical properties, mobility in soil, persistence in the environment, and bioaccumulation and toxicity in relevant organisms. Although currently a requirement for pesticide registration in Brazil, this process is not yet fully implemented in the country. This review aims to outline the principles of environmental risk assessment for pesticides, focusing on aquatic organisms, and to discuss the studies and efforts conducted in Brazil in this area

O uso intensivo dos agrotóxicos está associado a agravos à saúde humana e a outros organismos não-alvo, além de interferir em processos básicos do ecossistema, como respiração do solo, quebra de matéria orgânica e ciclagem de nutrientes. A avaliação de risco ambiental de agrotóxicos avalia a probabilidade de que um efeito ecológico adverso possa ocorrer, ou esteja ocorrendo, como resultado da exposição dos organismos a uma ou mais substâncias. Apesar deste processo ser um requerimento legal no Brasil desde 1996, o procedimento foi implementado pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Recursos Renováveis (IBAMA) somente em 2011. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é desenvolver uma plataforma de dados, a partir do Express 1.03.02, para conduzir avaliação de risco ambiental no Brasil usando o modelo Pesticide Root Zone Model (PRZM), desenvolvido pela Agência de Proteção Ambiental Americana (USEPA). O sistema foi testado utilizando o cenário de pulverização foliar do inseticida tiametoxam em soja no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos. Dados com informações climáticas do Brasil nos últimos 10 anos foram obtidos do Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, dados de área plantada foram obtidos do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística e dados para construção do cenário da cultura soja foram obtidos de estudos publicados, incluindo parâmetros da fenologia, características de plantio, caracterização do solo e equação universal da perda de solos. A plataforma Express BRA 1.0 foi desenvolvida e sua interação com o PRZM foi testada satisfatoriamente no cenário proposto usando dados do Brasil e dos Estados Unidos. O potencial de lixiviação do tiametoxam na zona da raiz da soja é depende principalmente das condições do solo e do desenvolvimento da cultura. A plataforma Express BRA 1.0 poderá ser usada para avaliação de risco ambiental em outros cenários relevantes no processo de registro de agrotóxicos no Brasil. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTOBrazil is one of the six largest consumers of pesticides in the world, taking the lead in this market in 2008 (IBAMA, 2010). The intensive use of pesticides is associated with damages to human health and other non-target organisms, and interferes with basic ecosystem processes such as soil respiration, breakdown of organic matter and nutrient cycling. Ecological risk assessment is a process that evaluates the likelihood that adverse ecological effects may occur or are occurring as a result of exposure to one or more substances. Although this process pesticides is a legal requirement in Brazil since 1996, the procedure was only implemented by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) in 2011. The main objective of this work is to develop a platform based on Express 2.03.2, to conduct ecological risk assessment in Brazil using the Pesticide Root Zone Model (PRZM), developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The system was tested using the scenario "application of thiamethoxam in soybean". Brazilian meteorological information for the last 10 years were obtained from the National Institute of Meteorology; crop data were obtained from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and data for the soybeans scenario were obtained from published studies, including phenology parameters, agricultural practices, soil horizons and universal soil loss equation. The platform Express BRA 1.0 was developed and its interaction with PRZM satisfactorily tested for the proposed scenario using Brazil and USA data. The leaching potential of thiamethoxam in the root zone was mainly dependent on soil conditions and crop development. The BRA Express 1.0 platform can be used for ecological risk assessment of other relevant scenarios during the pesticide registration process in Brazil
