Parody in the Burgundian Roman de Buscalus

    Get PDF
The Roman de Buscalus is a subtle work of montage combining in its story elements of romance and of chronicle to set up a Burgundian blood-line deriving from the Trojan and Roman past. As it does so, it establishes a secular typology of interpretation which reconfigures questions of Burgundian dynastic origins and places Tournai squarely in a proto-Burgundian political space. This paper analyzes key episodes of the Buscalus through the lens of parody to show how the luxury illustrated book plays a crucial role in the development of Burgundian courtly identity under Duke Philip.

Une moult estrange chose:: encounters with the alien in Burgundian prose literature C. 1445 - 1468

Under Philip the Good (1419-1467) the Burgundian Netherlands reached their political, territorial, and artistic apogee, a position gained not without the making and breaking of certain alliances. Particularly precarious was the relationship between Burgundy and die France of Charles VII. Following the signing of the Treat)' of Arras m 1435 the two parties enjoyed not the intended 'particular peace’ but a series of renewed hostilities which peaked in the period from around 1440 onwards. This turbulence provides the socio-cultural backdrop to this thesis. It is, 1 argue here, more than coincidental that this same time-period saw the emergence at the Burgundian court of a new literary phenomenon, the so-called mise en prose, or the Uterar)' product of rendering an earher verse source into a more legible form for the court. The verse sources in question are Francophone in origin; the choice and particular means of adapting these texts from c.1445 onwards can be seen as a literary response to the historical circumstances of then production. In this thesis 1 offer a close reading of a representative corpus of mises en prose through the model of Alienness, a reading-strategy developed out of themes manifested in the texts, but not limited to the thematic. Alienness functions like Terence Cave's textual 'felure', and allows die location of an element in the text’s unconscious through the retroactive glance of the modern critic. Through this model 1 illustrate how what 1 term Alien features of and in the text can provide not only a picture of the especial practices of adaptation and reworking adopted by the Burgundian authors but also elucidate a programme of metatextual identity-formation at court. Through locating the mises en prose m their historical context, and engaging with the corpus on a literary-critical rather than philological level, 1 postulate a new and more meaningful way of reading this misrepresented genre

Preparing Teacher Candidates to Serve Students From Diverse Backgrounds: Triggering Transformative Learning Through Short-Term Cultural Immersion

This study followed 24 teacher candidates in a short-term cultural immersion field experience designed to help them reflect on their assumptions and perspectives in order to better understand the culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse students they will teach. Qualitative methods were informed by a phenomenological research approach to examine candidates’ transformative learning experiences in a cultural immersion context. The findings are discussed within a three-stage framework of transformative learning: triggering experiences, frame of reference examination, and transformative change

Central to the literary output of the mid-fifteenth-century Burgundian court under Philip the Good was the phenomenon of the mise en prose, a process involving the rewriting of earlier source-texts, always Francophone and generally verse, in more legible Middle French prose for the duke and his intimates. Achieving this legibility depended not simply on a remanieur’s ability to translate (« translatter ») the retrograde and incomprehensible language of his source, but also on the extent to wh..

Knowledge and Perceptions of Electronic Cigarette Use among Pregnant Women

poster abstractThe association between maternal tobacco smoke exposure and restricted fetal growth has been well studied. However, the safety of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is quite controversial among pregnant women and the public. Research on the health effects of e-cigarette use during pregnancy is limited, particularly because of the health risks and ethical considerations. However, there is concern about the effects of the nicotine on fetal health from e-cigarettes. Some women’s beliefs about e-cigarettes are influenced by information that e-cigarettes may be beneficial as a way to decrease the number of tobacco cigarettes smoked. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to explore the knowledge and perceptions of e-cigarette use among pregnant women. Using pre-designated inclusion and exclusion criteria, relevant articles were located and reviewed searching PubMed, EMBASE, EBSCOhost, CINAHL Complete, and the reference lists of related articles. Full text, English language, peer-reviewed articles relevant to pregnant women’s knowledge and perceptions of e-cigarettes were reviewed. Of the thirty studies, six met the inclusion criteria. The following findings were common among the studies reviewed: 1) study participants had inaccurate information regarding the amount of nicotine in ecigarettes and the effects on the fetus; 2) e-cigarettes were perceived as safe alternatives and could be used for smoking cessation; 3) using e-cigarettes caused less negative side effects than traditional cigarettes; and 4) information obtained from the media about e-cigarettes was confusing for pregnant women. The findings support the need for healthcare providers to assess e-cigarette use among pregnant women and provide accurate information regarding e-cigarettes and the potential impact of use during pregnancy

The wrap-up: a unique forum to support pediatric residents when faced with the death of a child

Abstract Objective: The project intended to describe the format of the Wrap-up, a unique multidisciplinary guided debriefing following a child\u27s death. Specific feedback from pediatric residents was sought to assess the model. Methods: The Wrap-ups were timely (within 48 hours of a death), consistent (conducted after each pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) death), multidisciplinary (all care providers were invited), and specifically conducted by someone trained in postdeath facilitation. The role of the conductor was focused on being inclusive, navigating the discussion, diffusing areas of conflict or angst, and managing the tone of the meeting. Resident feedback was obtained by a one-time (May 2010) anonymous internet-based survey, with both open-ended free-text questions and five-point Likert scale queries. Surveyed were all residents rotating though the PICU between 2007 and 2010. Open-ended free-text responses were analyzed using content analysis methods by combining recurrent themes and organizing by main components of the Wrap-up. Quantitative responses, via a five-point Likert scale, were averaged. Results: Between 2007 and 2010, there were 36 PICU deaths. The average age was nine years old. All deaths had an accompanying conductor-led Wrap-up occurring, on average, two days after the death. Sixty percent (27/45) of pediatric residents completed the survey. Their qualitative responses showed that the key components (timely, multidisciplinary, and specifically conducted) of the Wrap-ups were valuable. Quantitatively, they agreed or strongly agreed that the consistent Wrap-ups improved end-of-life care, teamwork, stress surrounding the death, and the ability to care for others. Conclusion: The Wrap-up, a unique forum for debriefing after a pediatric death, was well-received by residents and assisted them with processing, understanding, and resolving their experience regarding the pediatric death. The Wrap-up was a valuable addition to residents\u27 experience and education in pediatric critical care medicine and can be replicated in other institutions
