Height in Politics: The Role of Height in Electoral Success in the State of Washington

Throughout the history of American presidential elections, the height of candidates has proven to be a statistically significant factor relative to success. This analysis examines whether the same trend applied to Washington State elections over the period 1994-2014. Ultimately, the data shows that Washington electoral results are not subject to change on the basis of candidate height – Washington elections do not reflect the presidential election trend

Lifetime rates and types of subsequent child protection system contact following a first report of neglect: An age-stratified analysis

An estimated 1 in 3 U.S. children will be the subject of a child protective services (CPS) investigation during their lifetime, typically for allegations of neglect. Whether and how an initial report of neglect is addressed may place children on divergent trajectories for safety and stability throughout childhood. The purpose of this study is to track subsequent CPS contact among children born in California in 2000 who were first investigated by CPS for neglect allegations alone (no co-occurring abuse) and not permanently separated from their families of origin (i.e., not removed or reunified if removed). We estimated the rates of subsequent CPS referrals, substantiated maltreatment, placement in foster care, and allegations of physical and sexual abuse by age 18. We assessed how rates of subsequent contact varied by initial CPS response and age at first investigation. Supplemental analyses disaggregated data by race and ethnicity. Results indicate that 64% of children initially investigated for neglect alone were re-referred to CPS by age 18 and 16% experienced a subsequent removal; however, these estimates varied greatly by age. Four out of five (79% to 83%) of children initially investigated as infants had one or more subsequent CPS referrals during childhood. Children were not only re-referred for allegations of neglect; more than half of children re-referred were reported for allegations of physical or sexual abuse, indicating that abuse risk was either missed during the initial CPS investigation or escalated afterward. The failure to address maltreatment risks when children first present to the system is a complex problem with no easy solution. Our findings document that a majority of children initially referred for neglect experience future CPS involvement, often for allegations of physical or sexual abuse

Innovative Abluftreinigung in der Tierhaltung: Machbarkeitsstudie zur Prüfung der Übertragbarkeit von Erkenntnissen der industriellen Abluftreinigung und innovativer Abluftreinigungsverfahren zur Minderung von Bioaerosol- und Geruchsemissionen aus der Geflügelhaltung

Die Studie wendet sich an Tierhalter, die Probleme mit der Reduzierung von Gerüchen und Bioaerosolen beim Betrieb ihrer Anlagen haben sowie an Genehmigungsbehörden und Hersteller von Abluftreinigungsanlagen. Am Beispiel der Geflügelhaltung wurde die Übertragbarkeit von Erkenntnissen der industriellen Abgasreinigung auf Anlagen der Landwirtschaft geprüft. Es wird aufgezeigt, ob und welche Möglichkeiten bestehen, um eine deutliche Minderung von Bioaerosol- und Geruchsemissionen zu erreichen

Minderung von Treibhausgas-Emissionen der Landwirtschaft

In dem Bericht werden der Treibhausgas (THG)-Ausstoß der sächsischen Landwirtschaft, die bisher erbrachten Klimaschutzleistungen und die Minderungspotenziale bis zum Jahr 2020 dargestellt. Für den gewählten Bilanzkreis hat die sächsische Landwirtschaft ca. 7,6 % zum THG-Ausstoß in Sachsen beigetragen. Im Vergleich zum Jahr 2000 konnte der THG-Ausstoß um ca. 5 % vermindert werden. Bis zum Jahr 2020 könnte ein THG-Minderungspotenzial von weiteren etwa 5 % erschlossen werden. Die Veröffentlichung richtet sich vorrangig an Fachleute aus der Landwirtschaft, aber auch an die Verbraucher, die ebenfalls einen Beitrag zur Minderung des THG-Ausstoßes leisten können

Energieeffizienz in der Abluftreinigung (Schweinehaltung)

In der Studie wurden in der Intensivtierhaltung eingesetzte Abluftreinigungsanlagen einschließlich Lüftungssystem hinsichtlich ihres technischen Aufbaus, ihres Energieeinsatzes und ihrer Energieeffizienz untersucht. Auf dieser Basis wurden Vorschläge zur Steigerung der Energieeffizienz erarbeitet. Aus der Betrachtung von zwei sächsischen Schweinehaltungsbetrieben konnten Hinweise für die Anlagenbetreiber und für Neuanlagen abgeleitet werden

Ectonucleotidases in Müller glial cells of the rodent retina: Involvement in inhibition of osmotic cell swelling

Extracellular nucleotides mediate glia-to-neuron signalling in the retina and are implicated in the volume regulation of retinal glial (Müller) cells under osmotic stress conditions. We investigated the expression and functional role of ectonucleotidases in Müller cells of the rodent retina by cell-swelling experiments, calcium imaging, and immuno- and enzyme histochemistry. The swelling of Müller cells under hypoosmotic stress was inhibited by activation of an autocrine purinergic signalling cascade. This cascade is initiated by exogenous glutamate and involves the consecutive activation of P2Y1 and adenosine A1 receptors, the action of ectoadenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP)ases, and a nucleoside-transporter-mediated release of adenosine. Inhibition of ectoapyrases increased the ATP-evoked calcium responses in Müller cell endfeet. Müller cells were immunoreactive for nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolases (NTPDase)2 (but not NTPDase1), ecto-5′-nucleotidase, P2Y1, and A1 receptors. Enzyme histochemistry revealed that ATP but not adenosine 5′-diphosphate (ADP) is extracellularly metabolised in retinal slices of NTPDase1 knockout mice. NTPDase1 activity and protein is restricted to blood vessels, whereas activity of alkaline phosphatase is essentially absent at physiological pH. The data suggest that NTPDase2 is the major ATP-degrading ectonucleotidase of the retinal parenchyma. NTPDase2 expressed by Müller cells can be implicated in the regulation of purinergic calcium responses and cellular volume

Promoter Complexity and Tissue-Specific Expression of Stress Response Components in Mytilus galloprovincialis, a Sessile Marine Invertebrate Species

The mechanisms of stress tolerance in sessile animals, such as molluscs, can offer fundamental insights into the adaptation of organisms for a wide range of environmental challenges. One of the best studied processes at the molecular level relevant to stress tolerance is the heat shock response in the genus Mytilus. We focus on the upstream region of Mytilus galloprovincialis Hsp90 genes and their structural and functional associations, using comparative genomics and network inference. Sequence comparison of this region provides novel evidence that the transcription of Hsp90 is regulated via a dense region of transcription factor binding sites, also containing a region with similarity to the Gamera family of LINE-like repetitive sequences and a genus-specific element of unknown function. Furthermore, we infer a set of gene networks from tissue-specific expression data, and specifically extract an Hsp class-associated network, with 174 genes and 2,226 associations, exhibiting a complex pattern of expression across multiple tissue types. Our results (i) suggest that the heat shock response in the genus Mytilus is regulated by an unexpectedly complex upstream region, and (ii) provide new directions for the use of the heat shock process as a biosensor system for environmental monitoring
