Assessment of Grade Implementation 7 of the K to 12 Science Standards

    Get PDF
This evaluative survey research determined the implementation of K to 12 science standards in stratified randomly selected public secondary schools in the Province of Iloilo as viewed by the implementers. It looked into the intended Grade 7 science standards and how they were implemented in the actual classroom setting. It further determined the problems met by the respondents during the implementation process. Data sources included a questionnaire checklist, students' learning competency test results, and focus group discussions with respondents. Frequency count, means, percentages, and standard deviations are for quantitative data analysis, while ANOVA is for inferential data analysis. The reached conclusions utilised problem tree analysis to determine the problems and gaps teachers have encountered and their recommendations to improve implementation. The generally assessed Grade 7 K to 12 science standards resulted in "Somewhat Fully Implemented", and they only vary in terms of instructional materials used and science laboratory equipment and facilities standards, with category C schools as the least favoured schools. Students were "Approaching Proficiency" in their level of learning competencies. They noted a significant difference in students' mean scores when classified in the category of schools favouring category A schools. A significant and strong positive relationship existed between teachers' selfassessed implementation of science learning competency standards and students' test scores in science learning competency tests. Feedback from teacher respondents showed that standards on science laboratory equipment were the least given attention among the five K to 12 science standards. It revealed that teachers need more knowledge and skills in using science laboratory equipment to enhance their teaching skills and even conceptual knowledge on the selected topics covering the four learning areas of science. A Hands-On Seminar workshop resulted in participants' apparent increase in competency skills in conducting experiments

Gender Differences of Body Composition Across Four Different Forms of Assessment

The present study aimed to evaluate the differences in body composition, specifically body fat percentage (BF%), fat-free mass (FFM), and body mass index (BMI), across four forms of assessment. It was hypothesized that male subjects, on average, would display consistently lower BF% when compared to females across four body composition data collection methods, and results would be highly correlated between the four. The BOD POD acted as the present study’s gold standard due to it being one of the most accurate methods of assessing BF% (Collins et al., 1999). It was assumed that women would have a higher BF% than men on average. According to Robergs and Roberts (1997), a healthy range of body fat for women is 20% to 25%, and a healthy range of body fat for men is 10% to 15%. A BF% over 20% for men and 30% for women is considered an indication of obesity. Additionally, Akindele et al. (2016) suggested that as BMI increases there is a corresponding increase in the BF%. Females are more likely to report BF% higher than their BMI but this concept is flipped for males meaning they will report lower BF% than their BMI.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/exercise-science-research-proposal-posters/1085/thumbnail.jp

The philosophy of D.H. Lawrence : from prophecy to pragmatism

Taking a more philosophical than literary view of Lawrence, this thesis interprets Lawrence's life and work in terms of its philosophical import and suggests that Lawrence's mature thinking can be seen as exemplifying the spirit of pragmatist philosophy. To that end, the ideas of pragmatist philosopher Richard Rorty are drawn upon in order to shed light on the course and outcomes of Lawrence's philosophical development. Daniel Dervin and Terry Eagleton are also prominent among other critics to whom I refer. Drawing on texts from several of the genres in which Lawrence wrote, the case is made that the particular circumstances of Lawrence's early life and emotional development first drew him towards an essentialist philosophical position which in tum led him into an ill-conceived 'messianic' phase. Among the texts considered here are Lawrence's short story' A Modem Lover' and essays including 'The Crown' and 'The Reality of Peace'. These texts span the period 1910 to 1917. Lawrence's association with the philosopher Bertrand Russell is also discussed. Lawrence's eventual abandonment of philosophical idealism is discussed in relation to his 'Democracy' essay of 1919 and the 1921 novella The Ladybird. Following a period of acute personal crisis in the aftermath of his failed messiahship, Lawrence's thinking is shown to have developed along lines which closely parallel Rorty's idea of' contingency'. The main text discussed here is Lawrence's Sketches of Etruscan Places, a piece of travel writing dating from 1927. A further stage sees Lawrence moving to a position analogous to Rorty's idea of 'irony'. The key text here is Lawrence's novella The Escaped Cock (written in two stages spanning 1927-8). The thesis culminates in an extended discussion of the three versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover (written during the period 1926-8) viewed in the light of Rorty's notion of 'solidarity'.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Sex differences in rheumatoid arthritis: more than meets the eye...

    Get PDF
Sex differences in the prevalence of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are well described, but the literature is not as clear about sex differences in RA disease course and prognosis. A recent study from a very large cross-sectional international cohort demonstrated slightly worse levels of disease activity and function in female patients with RA, compared with men. These findings are discussed in the context of our evolving knowledge of sex differences in the expression of this prototypic autoimmune disease, both in terms of the actual disease activity level, the effects that the disease has on physical function, and our ability accurately to measure these aspects
