    Real-time in-flight engine performance and health monitoring techniques for flight research application

    Procedures for real time evaluation of the inflight health and performance of gas turbine engines and related systems were developed to enhance flight test safety and productivity. These techniques include the monitoring of the engine, the engine control system, thrust vectoring control system health, and the detection of engine stalls. Real time performance techniques were developed for the determination and display of inflight thrust and for aeroperformance drag polars. These new methods were successfully shown on various research aircraft at NASA-Dryden. The capability of NASA's Western Aeronautical Test Range and the advanced data acquisition systems were key factors for implementation and real time display of these methods

    Indo-Tibetan Buddhist T~mtric practice employs struClured self-healing meditations aimed at awakening emotional and spitiruai qualities or energies whose seed already resides within us. This profound transfi)rmative pranice. with wrirren records dating back to at least 400 c.E., is investigated from several diverse orienrations: depth psychology. neuropsychology, and neurophysiology. from a Jungian perspecrive. the psychological process of this pracrice involves the re-collection and development of these energies to engender emotional and spirirual growth. Using a phenomenological task analysis. the various nemocognitive processes involved in such practice are identitied. Finally. we analyze the qU3mitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) characreristics of a Buddhisr ex-monk during various aspects of a self-healing meditation practice. The QEEG was recorded with a Lexicor Neuroseatch 24 ,md data analyzed using NeuroRep, NeuroGuidc. LORETA-KEY and EureKa!3 software. EEG rderence database, as well low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA), Staristical comparison of baseline and meditation conditions using LORETA revealed areas of brain activation consistent with those reponed in previolls neuroimaging studies. The QEEG results are discussed in the context of the phenomenological processes involved in the differenr types of meditation as well as with results of previolls srudies

    Europa: Prospects for an ocean and exobiological implications

    As far as we know, Earth is the only planet in our solar system that supports life. It is natural, therefore, that our understanding of life as a planetary phenomenon is based upon Earth-like planets. There are environments in the solar system where liquid water, commonly believed to be a prerequisite for biological activity, may exist in a distinctly non-Earth-like environment. One such location is Europa, one of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter. The possibility that liquid water exists on Europa presents us with some interesting exobiological implications concerning the potential of the satellite to support life.     Si3N4 emissivity and the unidentified infrared bands

    Infrared spectroscopy of warm (about 150 to 750 K), dusty astronomical sources has revealed a structured emission spectrum which can be diagnostic of the composition, temperature, and in some cases, even size and shape of the grains giving rise to the observed emission. The identifications of silicate emission in oxygen rich objects and SiC in carbon rich object are two examples of this type of analysis. Cometary spectra at moderate resolution have similarly revealed silicate emission, tying together interstellar and interplanetary dust. However, Goebel has pointed out that some astronomical sources appear to contain a different type of dust which results in a qualitatively different spectral shape in the 8 to 13 micron region. The spectra shown make it appear unlikely that silicon nitride can be identified as the source of the 8 to 13 micron emission in either NGC 6572 or Nova Aql 1982. The similarity between the general wavelength and shape of the 10 micron emission from some silicates and that from the two forms of silicon nitride reported could allow a mix of cosmic grains which include some silicon nitride if only the 8 to 13 micron data are considered

    The natural resources of Bolinas Lagoon: their status and future

    This publication is an integral part of the Department's high-priority inventory and assessment of coastal marshland and tideflat resources. It is intended as a guide for citizens, planners, administrators, and all others interested in the use and development of coastal lands and waters. Although the resources and problems of Bolinas Lagoon have probably been the subject of more biological and physical investigations than any small estuarine area of the California coast, many of the pertinent reports and information are not readily available to the public. Consequently, it is one purpose of this report to summarize the lagoon's history, ecological attractions, educational values and the problems facing its continued existence. At the same time, it should provide concerned citizens with a knowledge of the sources of additional and more specific information. Publication of this report is consistent with the obligation of the Department of Fish and Game to do everything in its power to protect and maintain the State's fish and wildlife resources. Therefore, its purpose transcends local issues on pollution and development, and the Department is, in fact, submitting a report to the people on the status and future of part of its inheritance and the dowry of coming generations. The report is the third of a scheduled series. It follows similar releases on Upper Newport Bay (Orange County) and Goleta Slough (Santa Barbara county) in March and June of 1970. Documentation of the resources of other critical areas is in progress. There will be future reports of this nature on Elkhorn Slough, Morro Bay, Tomales Bay, Humboldt Bay, and highly threatened marshlands in southern California. (137 pp.

    Radiative corrections and quantum gates in molecular systems

    We propose a method for quantum information processing using molecules coupled to an external laser field. This utilizes molecular interactions, control of the external field and an effective energy shift of the doubly-excited state of two coupled molecules. Such a level shift has been seen in the two-photon resonance experiments recently reported in Ref. [1]. Here we show that this can be explained in terms of the QED Lamb shift. We quantify the performance of the proposed quantum logic gates in the presence of dissipative mechanisms.     Medium power hydrogen arcjet performance

    An experimental investigation was performed to evaluate hydrogen arcjet operating characteristics in the range of 1 to 4 kW. A series of nozzles were operated in modular laboratory thrusters to examine the effects of geometric parameters such as constrictor diameter and nozzle divergence angle. Each nozzle was tested over a range of current and mass flow rates to explore stability and performance. In the range of mass flow rates and power levels tested, specific impulse values between 650 and 1250 sec were obtained at efficiencies between 30 and 40 percent. The performance of the two larger half angle (20, 15 deg) nozzles was similar for each of the two constrictor diameters tested. The nozzles with the smallest half angle (10 deg) were difiicult to operate. A restrike mode of operation was identified and described. Damage in the form of melting was observed in the constrictor region of all the nozzle inserts tested. Arcjet ignition was also difficult in many tests and a glow discharge mode that prevents starting was identified
