The bumper ceramic layer can be SiC or B.sub.4 C; the bumper shock attenuator layer can be zirconia felt; and the bumper confining layer can be aluminum. A base armor member can be spaced from the bumper member and a ceramic fiber-based curtain can be positioned between the bumper and base armor members

    A Randomized Trial Evaluating a Parent Based Intervention to Reduce College Drinking

    This study evaluated the effectiveness of a parent based intervention (PBI) in reducing drinking among first year college students (N = 443). Students were assigned to one of three conditions: PBI, PBI plus booster brochures (PBI-B), and an assessment only control group (CNT). At a 4-month post-intervention follow-up, results indicated students in the PBI-B group reported significantly less drinking to intoxication and peak drinking relative to the PBI group and CNT group. No significant differences were found between the PBI group and CNT group. Results provide further support for PBIs to reduce college student drinking and suggest that a booster brochure increases the effectiveness of PBIs

    The Bergman Minimal Model enables estimation of two key indices of glucose/insulin dynamics: glucose effectiveness and insulin sensitivity. In this paper we describe MINMOD Millennium, the latest Windows-based version of minimal model software. Extensive beta testing of MINMOD Millennium has shown that it is user-friendly, fully automatic, fast, accurate, reproducible, repeatable, and highly concordant with past versions of MINMOD. It has a simple interface, a comprehensive help system, an input file editor, a file converter, an intelligent processing kernel, and a file exporter. It provides publication-quality charts of glucose and insulin and a table of all minimal model parameters and their error estimates. In contrast to earlier versions of MINMOD and some other minimal model programs, Millennium provides identified estimates of insulin sensitivity and glucose effectiveness for almost every subject

    Failure properties and microstructure of healthy and aneurysmatic human thoracic aortas subjected to uniaxial extension with a focus on the media

    Current clinical practice for aneurysmatic interventions is often based on the maximum diameter of the vessel and/or on the growth rate, although rupture can occur at any diameter and growth rate, leading to fatality. For 27 medial samples obtained from 12 non-aneurysmatic (control) and 9 aneurysmatic human descending thoracic aortas we examined: the mechanical responses up to rupture using uniaxial extension tests of circumferential and longitudinal specimens; the structure of these tissues using second-harmonic imaging and histology, in particular, the content proportions of collagen, elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells in the media. It was found that the mean failure stresses were higher in the circumferential directions (Control-C 1474 kPa; Aneurysmatic-C 1446 kPa), than in the longitudinal directions (Aneurysmatic-L 735kPa; Control-L 579 kPa). This trend was the opposite to that observed for the mean collagen fiber directions measured from the loading axis (Control-L > Aneurysmatic-L > Aneurysmatic-C > Control-C), thus suggesting that the trend in the failure stress can in part be attributed to the collagen architecture. The difference in the mean values of the out-of-plane dispersion in the radial/longitudinal plane between the control and aneurysmatic groups was significant. The difference in the mean values of the mean fiber angle from the circumferential direction was also significantly different between the two groups. Most specimens showed delamination zones near the ruptured region in addition to ruptured collagen and elastic fibers. This study provides a basis for further studies on the microstructure and the uniaxial failure properties of (aneurysmatic) arterial walls towards realistic modeling and prediction of tissue failure

    Brief motivational interventions for college student drinking may not be as powerful as we think: An individual participant-level data meta-analysis

    Background For over two decades, brief motivational interventions (BMIs) have been implemented on college campuses to reduce heavy drinking and related negative consequences. Such interventions include in-person motivational interviews (MIs), often incorporating personalized feedback (PF), and stand-alone PF interventions delivered via mail, computer, or the Web. Both narrative and meta-analytic reviews using aggregate data from published studies suggest at least short-term efficacy of BMIs, although overall effect sizes have been small. Method The present study was an individual participant-level data (IPD) meta-analysis of 17 randomized clinical trials evaluating BMIs. Unlike typical meta-analysis based on summary data, IPD meta-analysis allows for an analysis that correctly accommodates the sampling, sample characteristics, and distributions of the pooled data. In particular, highly skewed distributions with many zeroes are typical for drinking outcomes, but have not been adequately accounted for in existing studies. Data are from Project INTEGRATE, one of the largest IPD meta-analysis projects to date in alcohol intervention research, representing 6,713 individuals each with two to five repeated measures up to 12 months post-baseline. Results We used Bayesian multilevel over-dispersed Poisson hurdle models to estimate intervention effects on drinks per week and peak drinking, and Gaussian models for alcohol problems. Estimates of overall intervention effects were very small and not statistically significant for any of the outcomes. We further conducted post hoc comparisons of three intervention types (Individual MI with PF, PF only, and Group MI) vs. control. There was a small, statistically significant reduction in alcohol problems among participants who received an individual MI with PF. Short-term and long-term results were similar. Conclusions The present study questions the efficacy and magnitude of effects of BMIs for college drinking prevention and intervention and suggests a need for the development of more effective intervention strategies

    The reaction between Cr(CO)6 and Na(C5Ph5 ) in refluxing diglyme yields [Na(diglyme)3/2][(C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3], 1. Metathesis of 1 with [Ph3P=N=PPh3 ]Cl in CH2Cl2 yields [Ph3P=N=PPh3][(C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3], 2. Oxidation of 1 by AgBF4 in cold THF under an argon atmosphere produces (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3, 3. Complexes 2 and 3 form a redox pair connected by a quasireversible one-electron process, E0 = -0.69 V vs ferrocene in CH2Cl2, E0 = -0.50 V in CH3CN, ks = 0.12 cm/s. ESR spectra of (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3 in toluene at 90 K gave a rhombic g-tensor with components 2.1366, 2.0224, and 1.9953, consistent with the expected low-spin d5 electronic configuration. The largest g-tensor component was significantly temperature dependent, suggesting an equilibrium between conformations with 2A´ and 2A˝ ground states.
